    How does such an engine advance its timing, under light load or high speed?
    Like old-fashioned petrol engines, using vacuum or centrifugal advance.
    I can't see any way to do it. The injector camshaft is fixed.

      It’s fixed. Like the 12 valve Cummins with a Bosch p7100. Factory is around 12.5 degrees for easy starting. For higher performance And efficiency more advanced timing is used. Downside is harder cold starts.

      The injector timing is controlled by shims between the injector pump block which carries the injector pumps. Putting the pumps closer to the cam causes the pumps to raise pressure sooner in the cycle. More shims lifts the pumps away from the cams and retards the build of fuel pressure in the rotation cycle. The governor increases or decreases fuel delivery based on engine speed caused by load.

    Why dont gasoline engines do this? Does the need for spark make this less practical or cost effective? 🤔

      Petrol is generally manifold or ported injected where as diesel engine is injected into the combustion chamber at 1000s of psi

      You are 100% correct. Normally the eccentric cam that operates the mechanical fuel feed pump is part of the injection pump camshaft, unfortunately that particular eccentric cam is not illustrated in this model injection pump.
