  • part 2 of the story of Shap.
Before the M6 motorway there were only two major roads linking England and Scotland - the A1 and the A6.
This series of videos covers stories from one of the most hazardous roads, The A6 over Shap fell in what is now known as Cumbria.

Great videos, my grandfather was a transport manager for Robsons of Carlisle and my father used to drive an old wagon on the A6 through Shap for Alan Walker of High Hesket in the 60s. My dad told me stories of struggles at Shap with wagons. He also told me his boss Alan Walker told him never to tell anyone he was loaded with whiskey or cigarettes and never throw a burning cigarette out of the cab when driving down the road :) I was born in Penrith so know the area well.......i make sure to always drive the A6 from Kendal headed north to Carlisle when i'm back in the country visiting, it's a great drive anytime of year in a good rental car with a heater and great brakes :)

The section over Shap opened in 1970. I learnt to drive on the old A6 over Shap in 1971 and 1972, which was then deserted, with virtually all the commercial traffic having gone onto the motorway. Driving on the A6 was then a pleasure, which was not what I had remembered from an earlier childhood in Kendal.
