If you want it to sound more throaty without cat/dpf deleting it extend the exhaust pipe so it reaches the back of the vehicle because the longer the pipe the throatier it sounds but it won’t make it much louder
I like very much to listen to older HGV drivers. I'm myself a driver, but the conditions are not comparable. Therefore I got a 6x6 tipper lorry from the early sixties to have at least a hint of what driving was back then.
I'm guessing the older wagons are no where near as powerful but they sound better. What is your 6x6 ? Ex army?
@@walt-sh7ju It's a Henschel, nonmilitary type, I bought from an old carter. Henschel was a well-liked maker from Kassel (Germany), unfortunately taken over by Daimler-Benz in the early seventies. When driving her in the summer one doesn't need to go to the sauna. I'm a member of a small group of enthusiasts who like to keep the old iron running. To tell the truth, I keep telling the mates that we should participate in the "Trans Pennine Run". But you know, driving on the "wrong" side and speaking English is not every one's cup of tea, unfortunately... regards
Liked your video! Thank you.
How did you wire up the 2 horns separately lad? I thought I was the only big kid around 😂
Brilliant stories!!.good old days..😂
I remember as a kid ,my dad telling me of the hardships of Shap . You had to be a real man to drive lorries in that era.
I lived in Bowness in the 70s I went to Kendal college. Some of the students in our class where from Shap. At the slightest hint of bad weather they would be sent home because the road always became blocked
When winters were propper winters. Now they shut schools at the slightest hint of bad weather in Bradford.
A brilliant wee trio of films.
Thank you.
They were Men sheets and Rope, No Power steering, cold cabs I know because I went with my Dad in the Lorrys in 70s,
We was here today but did not enter looked way to muddy
An old driver who I worked with many years ago would tell me as well as braking issues over shap would be pulling 10 ton with a 120 horsepower engine and needing to change down the box. The fear was cos no synchro boxes back then if you missed the gear you were going for that would be it game over you were at a stop and wouldn’t have enough power to get yourself moving on the incline. The good old days eh 🤔😊
Great to watch, however, most of us would prefer it WITHOUT the music its terrible
down shap withe a gardener engine, nock her out of gear (aberdeen booster)or (silent seventh) for more speed as you could not over run a gardener engine, she would drop a valve.a the good old days.
Aberdeen booster I like it.
@@walt-sh7ju HI, WE COULD ALWAYS TELL IF DRIVER HAD STICK OUT ON A GARDENER, WHEN HE PUT IT BACK IN AT BOTTOM OF HILL GREAT CLOUD OF SMOKE.
Thank you for uploading this, my late grandad used to work as a mechanic for scottish & newcastle breweries in kendal, he used to have to go to breakdowns up on shap in all weathers.
I'm sure the old Gadners thrived on that route with their cool running engines and endless ability to plod on
Most probably. Once talking to old driver that said their firm ran an old wagon with a gardener engine when the rest of the fleet were modern. He said they hated the old wagon and ran it with minimal oil, water and abused it but it kept going.
Sounds shit mush 😅
What years were this lorry type made?
1:15 - Now THAT's a Proper Lorry.
Scary to think it's legal gross weight would of been 32 tons with not much over a 100 hp engine.
In America (Pennsylvania) we once upon a time had a governor by that name.
Somebody jocularly said that Shap was where Birmingham ended and Glasgow began!
In those days, lorries could be overloaded, and had insufficient braking power when descending the hill. However, the Penrith to Carlisle section was far more dangerous, as it had extra traffic to and from the A66.
Thanks!
A man of taste. I had one of those Fiestas, a sliver Zetec 1.4. Phone button just muted the stereo. What a swiz.
Bought as cheap run around. Slow and noisey diesel, but ended up going all over the country in it.
Did you ever figure it out ? My DB 950 is doing the exact same thing
Turned out one of the batterys showed a decent charge but wouldn't supply any cranking amps. Starter all cleaned up and with a decent battery threw engine over fine. I was told chuffing noise was a valve but turned out to be copper washer on the bottom of an injector.
It's lovely, fascinating and quaint, especially to me in the USA. I grew up in Pittsburgh, sometimes riding on the Pennsylvania Turnpike which has a tunnel at over 2000 feet built in 1939. And I've gone several times across the Rockies where passes are over 10,000 feet and kept open year round. Of course everywhere has different standards, and you invest only enough to keep things tolerable, I guess. But it's amazing to me that more wasn't invested in infrastructure to keep it open in the past. I'm not surprised that the Americans had a plan to modernize it in WWII. In Pittsburgh we also had things like runaway truck ramps so that trucks which lost their brakes could run up and stop safely. And there's the famous song about 40 thousand pounds of bananas coming into Scranton Pennsylvania, which happens to be Biden's hometown. So presumably he knows about runaway trucks, at least.
Nice head of hair!
The dangers of Shap were the overloading of lorries and their braking systems were less efficient than they are today. What is often overlooked is that the Penrith to Carlisle stretch is a much more dangerous road with all its blind summits and changing widths, and there would be extra traffic off the A66.
What is not often realised is that the Penrith - Carlisle section of the A6 is a killer stretch of road.
I put a cherry bomb exhaust on mine and was exactly the same, no change.
well yeah a muffler will be even quieter than DPF-back
Great video!
Thank you. A friend wanted to see the video during lock down so we up loaded it to you tube, I think quite a few people have enjoyed it too.
I love an old organ.
You need a good battery with the proper cold cranking amps.
I suppose coming from Shap, my ancestors wouldn't feel so overwhelmed by the Canadian winters.
I live in Canada and have a letter dated 1801 from a several times great uncle to my several times great grandfather Cook saying that their father had taken a new wife and they were living in Shap.
Thank you for showing these wonderful clips. I've enjoyed each and every one!
I'm now coming 73 and started 1965 as drivers mate all hand ball a forklift truck was a novelty, my driver Norman used to whack me about the head with newspaper, if the rope hitches were not at the same height, I loved him, and Norman is no longer with us, but I'll never forget him on our travels all over the UK, The jungle we always stopped and sometimes we were snowed in. I'll always my travels as a boy with Norman. Then at the age of 21 allocated my own truck the education I gained from still with me today I'm next birthday 73 and I'm still at it, only on three shifts a week, but Norman and the old boys now and then fill me with pride and the passage of time they were real men and all forgotten, but not our Norman, when I'm driving the lorry I look up to summer sky and speak with him and tell him I'm still going and your with me 👍
OMG! - thank you for sharing - i was a kid hitching over Shap from Newcastle back to Cheshire many times in late 60's - maybe I saw you - & thank you for sharing so clearly about Norman x
Voltage is one thing. It's the Amps that do the real work.
how did a snow plough driver get too work
went over shap many times one hell of a road before m6 i think there was a cafe called the jungle
At night you could see the glow from some of the exhausts! Gardners, Cummings AECs etc.
Missed a "cog" an that was it! You had to start all over again! Something you really didn't want to do!
Back in the 60's stayed in Shap on many a Sat. or Sunday night with Benny & Georgia Bentley in the Crown Inn great digs if the weather was bad tried to make Kendal just incase there was snow through the night :) happy days
Is decat out and dpf be make video soon
I remember the jungle cafe, a good hot meal and a slot machine jackpot that paid out 15 pounds in old dispenses. Many a lorry overheated at the top of Shap and had to stop to cool down. The cafe at the top had good tea and cake. They were the good old days when drivers stopped to help each other.
Brought back many memories in the sixties when I was young. Shap in the winter in a cold cab, depended on the cafes to keep warm. My dad nearly got killed at strawberry bank when the lorry hit black ice
Why did you cut off the credits? When was this made?
im still a novice with things like this but i get pointers off my 11 year old, i must of done something wrong when i uploaded. looking at the then modern day traffic it must be mid to late 90s.
They show this video in the Leyland Motor Museum and I wouldn't be surprised if they owned the vehicles and commissioned the documentary. I too was looking for the origin in the credits.
That was excellent, happened on it purely by chance. Thoroughly enjoyed that.
You don’t see many Chinese six. Wheelers now
Fantastic films. Thank you... 😀
Glad you enjoyed it
What a great collection of stories.
