I noticed on several other sites that a lot of people slagged off Sinead's version of this most wonderful of songs so,full of curiosity,I had a listen. Christ - it's fantastic!! I loved it on first hearing and that's very rare for me. Yes,the Cocteau's version is arguably still the very best but this comes very close. Having said that,I am still waiting for the first Sinead recording that I don't like - she is without doubt one of the most fabulous artists of all time.

This Mortal Coils version with Liz is amazing but Sineads is brilliant as well. Liz and Sinead are both huge talents and Ive seen both live for which I am grateful. I saw Sinead in Berkeley in 1991 and Cocteau Twins 1990. Both amazing concerts.

To the people that say a man shouldn't sing this song, check before you speak! The song was written and sung by Tim Buckley, so written by a man. Furthermore, the song is about a sirens who lure men, and is called Song to a Siren, therefore is from the perspective of a man singing to a woman! Women can sing it but to say it isn't a mans song is idiotic.

That's not a bad response!! I completely agree with you that a lot of today's "artists" are very precious and are complete mediocrities, but I've always considered Sinead to be extremely talented - I think eccentric rather than outright pretentious. When I heard her sing Mandinka all those years ago I thought she was the best female singer to emerge since Dusty Springfield. That's still my view.

I can relate the date to the bird I was going out with at the time - a scrubber with black roots and a slight limp who worked for NORWEB - so please accept my sincere apologies for the chronological confusion.

There is another artist that one of the Cocteau Twins performed, it was a solo by Elizabeth Fraser did herself, no background band, just her singing, it is a fairly recent posting from her performing in 1983, she has short reddish-blond hair on a black background, that is my favorite. I got confused myself on all the covers, it said This Mortal Coil, exact same lyrics Even though I have listened to youtube songs for years, I'm still baffled on how to send a song.
