You must be a baby in international affairs not to know that all countries in the BRICS are failed countries. From Russia to Pakistan- India and some of these dubious Arabs Countries. Brics are not going to replaced the dolarisation of the world economies. It would be an option for those countries who are willing join. Dollar still remains the most favorable currency in international market.

BRIC is wise to avoid Nigeria as they are much to dysfunctional, corrupt, tribally divided and generally untrustworthy. They'd be more of an anchor than an asset.

Nigeria was deliberately left out despite its potential to allow it to clean itself because right now it is very toxic. It is easy to admit a small toxic country into BRICS and encourage it to shape up. However, to admit a toxic "giant" like Nigeria is risky as Nigeria may end up contaminating the entire BRICS Plus. If anything Nigeria should be encouraged to clean itself up.

South Africa has reasonably complete hegemony in its region with a consistent foreign policy outlook and involvment. They're an attractive prospect for BRICS. Nigeria has difficulty defining a coherent foreign policy, barely able to impose herself as the hegemon of her region...I mean just look at France ordering Nigeria around and trying to have them fight a proxy war. Nigeria in this instance is strong enough to say No to france and withstand any consequence.

I don't think the good Dr Okhai is taking the correct approach by viewing South Africa as a potential competitor for Nigeria in trying to dominate Africa. We should try to look at one another as two influencial African states that can work together with 52 other states to build a united, strong continent. To suggest that South Africa is now positioning itself to lead ahead of Nigeria is the type of tribalism this continent does not need. This is a very unprofessional thing to say at this level of dialogue. In fact, Russia and China were never going to choose Nigeria ahead of South Africa as a founding member state of BRICS simply because Russia and China have strong, very strong political ties with the current South African government that go as far back as the 1970s. Anyways, greetings to all Nigerians from us South Africans. Let's unite the continent and quit the tribalism!

It's all 5 members' decision. Secondly, I'm convinced that the only reason West Africa is not in Brics is because that place rightfully belongs to Nigeria. But Nigeria is still very much tied to the West's apron strings, even willing to invade and punish a neighbor for standing up to western bullies, an obvious issue for Brics nations. Brics doesn't need that drama so early in its launch.

Countries sitting at the table of BRICS are countries free of the colonial mindset and believe in equal, respectful, fair and peaceful relationships. Nobody is looking for dominance over another, unlike the colonial mindset where one must fight for dominance and then once they achieve it seek to freely exploit, bully and disrespect others as their reward. Nigeria and even Ghana are unfortunately struggling to free themselves from this colonial mindset of aspiration and this comes from their leadership that too often do not serve the interest of the people and so are too easily manipulated by former colonial powers and their friends, for selfish reasons or because they see no hope for things changing for Nigeria or the African continent under the exploitation of former colonial powers and their friends, and so only look out for themselves. The man speaking as a guest in this interview is the kind of man Nigeria would need as a leader to shape and lead Nigeria into being ready to join BRICS and successfully joining BRICS, but he appears only as a guest on political shows, not on the ballot for the leadership of the country. Right now they are trying to force Ukraine back into the fold. Eventually they will win. When they do, it will be Georgia next, as they are currently occupying that country. One mistake that Nigeria has made was to think that they've conquered colonialists just because they don't live among them. The level of hopelessness, one would swear apartheid was in Nigeria and not South Africa but the thing about living under apartheid is that we know that the fight is never over, we never lose hope just like the Palestinians keep fighting and the black Americans too. Instead of being ashamed that South Africa was supposed to be looking up to Nigeria and take time to introspect they see South Africa as the enemy. That time the real enemy has their foot on their neck. We can't be fighting neocolonialism while at the same time defending ourselves from other Africans. 😢I now understand why Nigeria has such a negative view on us. These are the things that they hear in their media about us and make no mistake, the west is involved. I'd expect better from a scholar.
How are we to blame when we just partially got out of the apartheid era 30 years ago and they've had way longer to be making moves that put Africa at the forefront? It's like a grown adult who sat and did nothing with their life having a problem with a kid that decided to do different and make a change. I can't believe that North Africa is more on the same page with us than West African nations. It is sad to see how weak and down on their knees they are. We're not competing with you, even Egypt that's always passing us economically understands that.

South Africa would love to have Nigeria in Brics. We do not see Nigeria as a rival, yet Nigeria seems to regard us as its rival. I'm not privy to the inner workings of Brics & I cannot talk for them. I'm a civilian. If Nigeria did make a formal application to join Brics & was not considered, my take is that the current legal issues surrounding President Tinubu could have played a major part in that decision. Its about time Nigeria stopped thinking of itself as THE LEADER of Africa. A large population does not, of itself, bestow the honour of leadership to any country. No country has the right to regard itself as the leader of our continent.

The guest is a bit short-sighted in terms of insisting on how joining the BRICS would give Nigeria a bigger and better negotiation power. Instead of making the case and hammering facts and figures on WHAT Nigeria can bring to the table and HOW that would enhance the BRICS, he sat there blaming South Africa over and over again. And worse, he suggests to go around South Africa and lobby China and Russia. That is how some Africans sow division among themselves. This "intellectual" should know that it would yield better results for Nigeria to start courting South Africa as BRICS' giant on the continent (at least for now), and show good intentions of fruitful and mutually beneficial collaboration by building partnerships and strong ties on the continent. The BRICS is not about internal competition, it's about building a synergy by bring assets together. If Nigeria starts a blame game from the get go, this would be a sign of the spirit of division that it could sow within the BRICS once on board of the BRICS ship.
