    The rule is always, a prime will be more sharp, have more contrast, and have better color than a zoom, but the Zeiss Touit 12mm proves that rule in spades!! I was in NYC when this lens came out, and immediately marched downtown and bought it, and I have been thrilled with it ever since. I use this all the time for Architecture, both exterior and interior, some landscape, in particular, city landscapes. Its very sharp, contrasty and colorful. Everything I could ask for.

    Nice review Dave. I'm really zero budget here and have a Sony a6000 with the kit and 55-210mm manual zoom. I mainly shoot video, the 16-50mm seems to be fine, though the motor is very noisy. The manual 55-210mm is ok for stills but pretty terrible with video. I've been saving for the 18-105mm, F4, "video" Zoom. I would like to know your thoughts, seems nice for the price.

    Hi Dave, Cheers for the good review. I m interested in the touit bc of astro for which it should obviously great however I also shoot a lot of video and I might use this lens for underwater stuff later on so I am very dependent on the AF (mostly in stills but it has to work properly). So the question obviously is how much better did it get with firmware update (in case you sent it in). At a 1000 bucks without weather sealing a not working AF is a dealbreaker for me, then the samyang will be as good at least considering the price =/

  • @HolgerNestmann
    @HolgerNestmann Před 7 lety

    Hi Dave,
    I have a similar combo on the longer end, a Zeiss 35mm 1.8 and the Sony/Zeiss 16-70mm 4.0. I do share your thoughts and if I would have seen this video before I would have reconsidered buying the Zeiss (Who am I kidding, I live where Zeiss started).
    Anyways the test video of the Zeiss lens looks like you shot with a wider aperture, making the focus pumping much more visible, but also showing why you might opt for a prime lens on Sony's APS-C cameras as there is no fast zoom lens.
    Zeiss did update the Firmware with I believe the 6300 to support the newer AF methods- so I don't think Sony is to blame. The touit line is just a bit older, which shows specifically on Video usage.
    Thanks for all your great content!
    Cheers
    Holger

    Have you tested the Samyang 12mm f/2? Not AF, but a remarkable lens. IMO, only held back by only 6 aperture blades instead of the more beautiful 7 or 9. I used it on my Fujifilm X-T1, now on the Samsung NX1. The sharpness is great, highly recommended.

    My question is can you sharpen the 10-18 clips in PP enough to match what the zeiss captures raw? If you always run with manual focus I think it could be worth it to get sharper images. But for continuous AF and having a zoom could outweigh the sharpness. Good review though, huge difference in sharpness!

    Thank you for the help, but I have another question related to ISO, I wonder if it's my A6000 having issue or is it in general, when you set the ISO on 640, in an indoor pretty dark environment will make the video unusable already?
    I set the video quality to XAVCS already, using the song 18-105 F4 with ISO 640, and there's crazy noises everywhere, but when its ISO 320, its totally fine. May I ask if there's anything wrong please?

  • @FelipeFigueroaG
    @FelipeFigueroaG Před 7 lety +11

    Dave, I own this lens and you're mistaken about the firware update. You can't do it with a Sony body, you have to physically send it to Zeiss for the update (you can only see the version on the body, but that's it).
    I won't add link to the official Zeiss page so youtube doesn't flag my comment as spam, but just google "zeiss touit firmware update" (also you should add "touit" as a tag in the video btw).
    I also asked Zeiss on their FB page and they told me that if a v03 firmware were ever to come out, I would have to send the lens to them AGAIN to get the latest firmware.
    Zeiss only has repair centers in the US, Germany (Europe), China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. So if you live outside of those countries, you have to pay a lot of money on shipping to get the latest firmware (I know because I live in Chile and I'm stuck with version 01).
    Also, on pricing, this lens and the 32mm periodically drop in price, I know it because I got both of them for 1000 USD new a while back on B&H.
    Great video btw, thanks!

      Felipe Figueroa that's good to hear. I had written this lens off until someone mentioned the updated firmware. It is definitely a little confusing. I guess the update is recent and is only shipping with new lenses. Other than sending it in, like you said. If that engages the phase detection, it's game over in my opinion. Less distortion, and sharper? sold.

    Zeiss Touit 12mm/2.8 APS-C has the same problem than the Sigma 19 2.8 Art series when it is in continuis focus. I think it is not a problem of the lens, as you said it is a problem of sony and the third parties. Sigma 19 is a fantastic lens but with the vibrant focus in AF, the same than this zeiss but 5 less cost.

      After upgrading from my NEX7 to a6500, I sent my Zeiss12 in for V.2.0 firmware. In stills, the lens is much more stabile and doesn't continuously hunt for focus, but when shooting video, it's even worse than FW 1.0 on my NEX7. I'm getting the S10-18 for video and will use the Z12 strictly for landscape and underwater stills (Nauticam a6500 housing). l'm hoping for better underwater video tracking and stabilization using the Sigma 16mm f1.4 which is what I was after in the body upgrade. To summarize: The Z12 is absolutely horrible in AF in video (noisy and jumpy) with whatever FW you are using, either V. 1 or 2. I'm disappointed I won't be using my Z12 for video much when diving. I suppose you can set your focus and then maybe turn AF off with one of the function buttons? I haven't tried that yet and hope it will work.

  • @Stevesmith-yw7cr
    @Stevesmith-yw7cr Před 7 lety

    If you want to use the Zeiss Touit 12mm F2.8 for video, you have three options. First is to use it as is with auto focus and all the noise you will get. The second option is to use a separate mic away from the camera. The third and the one I use is to just use it with manual focus. That eliminates the auto focus noise....which is quite predominant. This is my noisiest lens by far when using auto focus. The nice thing about the Zeiss Touit 12 is the image quality and when using manual focus, it is very sharp due to its wide focal length at most distances. It does not take much to manual focus this lens when doing video. And you get to really know your camera when doing manual focus. I love this lens for stills and for video.......you just have to know its limitations. And make sure it has the most recent firmware update. If your go to your menu, look for version and if the lens is not listed on the version, then it needs to be updated by Zeiss. Send them the lens and they will do the update and send it back free of charge. This is a great lens and even better with the update.

    • @MicBergsma

      Steve smith hmm hard decision which lens to get... 🙈

    • @marshcolley1510
      @marshcolley1510 Před 5 lety

      I recently upgraded my NEX7 to a6500 for video tracking and stabilization for lens, like the Sigma 16 f1.4, that don't have it onboard OSS. I sent my Z12 in for the FW upgrade to V. 2 and while it helped in stills greatly, it didn't do much for video (still hunts and jumps (even worse than FW 1 on my NEX7!). So my options are the ones you mention. Do you use a function button or perhaps the AF/MY button to turn AF on/off when shooting video? Is this at all possible? Thanks Newbie here to video on Sony APS-C.

    For stills the Samyang/Rokinon 12 2.0 kills the touit. The whole Touit family is kinda overpriced in my opinion. Maybe to 50mm 2.8 is ok but the 12mm and 32mm are very overpriced for what you get. Also the build quality sucks sometimes, I have friends with the 12mm who both had problems one of which was ridiculous :) he bought it and after unboxing he found that a lens element inside was lose and the lens was creating huge vignette on one part of the frame and the box was in perfect condition.
    Firmware update can not fix cheap noisy AF motor inside :)so forget to shoot video with this 12mm.
