The fact that you were invited by OBB is testimony to your professionalism and huge following. Congratulations!
Otherwise the ticket will cost him up to 800€ for one direction... NJ prices are crazy
@@jonny6415 This is why we need market liberalization in our railways. Competition is the key towards better services and cheaper prices. Just look at the cases of Italy and Spain. They have lots of operators competing with each other and that has reduced prices substantially. Riding the high-speed train in Spain or Italy is cheaper than in any other EU country.
@@guerreiro943 lol no, the UK is the perfect example of how the liberalization of national railways can go really wrong
@@paul_ko liberalization can be done tastefully, not fully free market capitalism. government writes out tenders for routes timetables and such and private companies compete to win it. gov will still be in control of everything, there'll be just loads more options, different quality and price range rides which is overall better for the consumer
@@guerreiro943 Basically, I agree with you. But, by all means, liberalization of national railways should NOT be done like in Germany since the 90s. The company is still in the hands of the German state to 100%. This can only go wrong as the state and its government are dramatically failing to manage an efficient and successful company combined with affordable ticket prices, a suitable trackage all across the country and intelligent schedules for travellers.
This state-owned company DB has become nothing but a disgrace for Germany since its pseudo-liberalization. And it even seems to get worse every single year. My grandfather, may he rest in peace, was a railwayman and he often told stories about the good old times of the former "Deutsche Bundesbahn" between 1952 and 1993. He was really proud of working there in different positions all these years, it has been a huge part of his life. I remember him complaining constantly about the so-called 'liberalization' which followed his retirement in the 90s.
But actually, this has not been a liberalization, it was just a call to a state-owned company to gain profits without really changing the structures of it and just with a semblance of real competition. Managerial staff who doesn't seem to have a clue of what they're doing which is typical for state-owned companies who are suddenly forced to chalk up profits with very little competition. Tracks have been demolished within the last decades because they've been accused not to be viable enough anymore. This development has become a total failure and reached its climax within the last couple of years. And what are the DB chairmen doing? They are paying themselves out some bonuses of five millions € or more only for 2023 while the staff such as engine drivers or conductors seem to be at their mental and physical limits. According to my experience within the last months, I'd estimate that one out of three trains in Germany is arriving on time right now...and you need to be lucky enough that it didn't get completely cancelled.
Good to see NightJet is expanding so swiftly. Would love to see a EU-wide night train network in the future. Now about the pricing...
Hopefully they'll either increase the luxury of the service, or drop those massive prices in the future when the network matures!
Going off the price in the video (69€) that’s not all that high right? Or am I just privileged 😅
@@teunw6699 In a couchette accomodation that price is not High at all, in general ÖBB-DB Eurocity services are not very expensive
pricing with NJ has gone crazy adding some really high dynamic pricing and base fares with the new trains@@teunw6699
@@cameroneridan4558 No, not more unnecessary luxury, that only hikes up prices.
Thank you for an absolutely superb and very informative video. You are absolutely right to praise OBB for their faith in overnight trains. Perhaps the most important point is the man from DB admitting that their abandoning night trains was a terrible mistake. And the mere presence of the head of SNCF on the platform at the Gare de L'Est spoke volumes. SNCF very nearly gave up on night trains!
They almost gave up...
Thanks for sharing and also the history and background of this train route. 😊
Arguably the best part of a superb video.
Une vidéo aussi précise et exhaustive en si peu de temps... Je sais pas comment tu fais gros ! 👏
Nightjet is going to be the next big thing in European Railways. I am super excited with the new connection between Barcelona and Vienna starting in late 2024. Congrats for this travel and the video! Cheers!
Simply Railway, please do more trips like this.😊
I was riding the night train Hamburg to Paris the last year they was in service. It was sad affair with DB not caring at all.
I remember it was a couple hours late so it arrived at about the same time as this does.
Which gives gives you enough time to get a TGV southbound around noon and be in south of France late afternoon.
this is lovely! i really hope we can see night trains return to London St Pancras at some point!
I don't think that will happen anytime soon. There are incredibly strict requirements trains must meet to pass the channel tunnel. Even the German ICE train couldn't get a permission. Well, and the other thing is brexit. You guys isolated yourself with that.
You have a very professional channel. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I will be back!
Have a great weekend,
Peter
Danke für den spannenden Einblick - richtig cool! 😍🎉 Wir sind vor kurzem Nachtzug von Halle nach Paris gefahren - auch mit dem Nightjet. So eine gute Möglichkeit! ❤🚆
COOLES vIDEO !
Congratulations to OBB and Nightjet for this historic accomplishment, showing once and for all that the night trains are far from dead, that they are wanted now more than ever.
Now, on to the next battle: Revive the Restaurant Car! Bring back the Bistro!
Great video! Always good to see night trains becoming more common in Europe
Night trains have always been common in Europe. Just not in *Western* Europe but Westerners are so egocentric that they believe the rest of Europe does not exist.
Night Trains is the way to travel - I will take that over any other mode of traveling.
I remember taking one of the last ICNL to Paris. We went there for a weekend trip and it was super practical. It’s really nice to see a night train running again in this route
Thank you for sharing a very nice trip.😊😊
OBB has been doing a great job with Nighjet. Can't wait for seing them expand into Spain, maybe even Portugal and UK why not (a challenge!) once they get new equipment.
Another excellent video... :):):)
What an amazing trip, and such a great opportunity for you to be invited on the inaugural run! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!
Thanks!
Thanks !!
I say it now for all to hear. The most spacious couchettes on the market in all of Europe are the 4-berth CFR couchettes running on the Dacia 347/346 train between Vienna and Bucharest. Those are huge, have 2 windows (which you can open) and space inside like you couldn't imagine. I suggest you all give it a try. Bonus. There is also a full MAV dining car between Viena and Budapest
Sold me on the dining car!
The most spacious BY FAR are Moscow - St. Petersburg "luxury" single couchettes on the "Red Arrow" train. That's if we're talking europe. EU side it'd probably be Finnish night rail trains or Moscow - Kaliningrad "Amber" service which provides stops in Lithuania (yes, in 2023. Quite a bit of Russia/EU dual citizens use that as a primary service between Russia and EU). This is due to the wider gauge which leads to wider wagons and wider couchettes.
@@pashazzubuntu Lets say I wanted to ride the Moscow to Kaliningrad train. Where could I buy tickets?
I've taken the sleeper before, and it was very comfortable, the bed was great, compartment was clean, and the scenery outside was amazing. Only complaints - CFR don't keep on top of cleaning the toilets very well, and they removed the bistro car in Romania for a bar instead which is a lot less useful, especially when your train doesn't arrive until 15:00!
@@JordanVTheWorld yup, it's a bummer. Since 2023, CFR removed all of their full dining cars stock from the rails and used only these tiny bar versions. They are refurbishing them and looking to bring them back on the rails starting with 2025. With regards to the toilets, the protocol of cleaning them is not well established. Many times they start the trip dirty without being touched by staff for the whole journey
The grandma’s house joke made me laugh out loud. The rest of the review was also excellent, love your work
So Germany needs ÖBB's help to establish a decent connection between Berlin and Paris... ;) Just as you said, only 8 minutes to change trains can be critical while travelling with DB during the day... :D I'm somewhere in the middle between Paris and Berlin, I think Paris is even a bit closer from here in the West of Germany. Fortunately, we've got the Thalys departing and arriving here when it comes to Paris or any another place in France by train, even if it's more than 20 years ago now since I made use of it the last time when I was youngish. ;)
All the best in New Year.
Wonderful coverage.. !!
Great video. I really enjoyed the view out of the back with the mist all around the landscape. So awesome. Thank You.
Awesome report, as usual!
Thank you for sharing.
Great trip report
I applaud every effort to expand rail passenger service! It makes sense to have daily night trains that, as you said, allow passengers to sleep through the night and wake up near their destinations. The cost per ticket is dramatically lower than the amount involved in day time travel plus hotel accommodations. Congratulations to everyone involved! Thank you for the excellent video.
I can totally see why you were emotional; that must have been an amazing moment to arrive back in your capital on the first overnight train from Germany and with THAT sort of welcome!
And at 13:25, that was a great save with that really close post coming up on you and your phone!
Thanks for taking us along, Thibault. It's great that OBB has re-introduced or introduces more night trains across Europe. Sure, there must be many gaps that have yet to be filled, but it's a good start. It's also encouraging that this new service is booked to capacity, not to mention the ambition to increase the frequency to a daily service within the next 12 months.
Yeah I agree. I really hope Copenhagen where I'm from gets put back on the map at some point. Our CityNightLine service which went to Basel, Amsterdam, and Prague was cancelled back in 2014. Since then the only thing we've gotten have been seasonal couchette only night trains by Snälltåget to Berlin and the Austrian Alps since 2021. SJ's Euronight train also passes through but during the middle of the night and sometimes doesnt even stop, so it doesnt really count.
@@drdewott9154there used to be a Copenhagen-Munich, too.
Super Video Danke!
This is great!
Berlin’s station is beautiful. Great work with this video!
People are looking for a more convenient way to travel between countries without having to use air travel only thing that would put families off would be the cost, budget airlines by booking in advance can compete better with costs of course booking a seat only will negate costs but families need a compartment so it will be interesting to see the pricing of travel at peak holiday times, great post
Can't wait to try it out, thanks for this video
This connection is more important than all others at this moment. Why? Because it simply gives residents of Central and Eastern Europe a chance to connect with Western Europe in a reasonable time and with a minimum number of transfers. For example, I love backpacking and if I want to get to the Pyrenees from Poland, I can do it by three trains (including two night ones) and still have a lot of time to explore Berlin and Paris. How cool is that. And adding the fact that traveling with a large backpack I would pay a similar (if not higher) price with airlines, the train now makes even more sense.
I know how me and my mum are getting to Berlin next summer now...
Thrilled to see this happen! I hope it's a big success!!
We have to be thankful to ÖBB that, when so many night trains in Europe were cancelled, they didn't see this as an omen, but as a business opportunity. CNL was cool in the sense that a consist would contain Austrian, Swiss, German, Czech and other carriages, all in the same train (really fun to model, let me tell you). But it went the way of the dodo.
Until, that is, the Austrians stepped in. Austria is not a very large country, and it doesn't have a large population, but they single-handedly revived a much-loved travel experience that everybody else thought was dead.
Great trip. No wonder you love the couchette! Thanks Thibault💚💚
I love how the sncf Traxx is exactly the same as the cfl Traxx
Wow that arrival in Paris! I could feel the goosebumps sitting here at my desk :)
Merci beaucoup pour cette excellente vidéo ! Quel merveilleux service !
Thank you very much for this great video ! What a wonderful service !
Keep up the great work as always.
Excelente vídeo y noticia. Larga vida a los Nightjet ❤
Great trip. Finally Paris - Berlin sleeper Train is operating again with the new face.
Great report as always bro!
Fantastic! Watching form Australia, this is a great night service that I will add to my itinerary when traveling Europe!
Boa viagem inaugural de trem gostei simplys

Great video !!
Wonderful trip!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nice video on this something I'll have to do for 2024 for sure!
Very nice Video Thibault, I'm really a bit jealous of all the journeys you're doing. But I shouldn't complain, I'm getting around quite a bit myself and even though I haven't been on this service for the inaugural journey, I will be traveling on this train in February and on the all new Nightjet from Innsbruck to Hamburg in January and I am really looking forward to these journeys.
Nice video!😊
I love watching your videos. Actually you are the first railway CZcamsr I started watching. Interesting to hear your voice for ok nice.I envy Europe with all the high speed trains cruising all over the continent. I don't know if this will ever happen in Africa where I live. Trains are safe, efficient and so romantic too:)
So many experience from your video,
Nice vlogs, lots of love and support from nagaland kiphire, your new subscriber
I am going to c yr Amtrak journeys.
Merci.
Super film - Like!!!
been waiting for you to release a video on this subject ^^

Great Video! Halle is my hometown!!! :)
Good! 🙂
We need OBB to make their Nightjet prices more reasonable and maybe people will use the service
They aren't short of passengers who use the train. So they don't have any need to lower prices.
I am tempted to go.
Very good cover on this journey. You're right, the 6-bed couchettes are indeed smart, did several travels between Stockholm - Paris Nord, and the night train was either between Copenhague or Hamburg to Paris, also via ferry, for a perfect leg stretch and food+wine supply when travelling south. Cheers and Joyeux Noël
I took that Russian train a few years ago moscow-berlin-paris, just the Berlin to Paris part. It was nice but I believe you had to go to the Polish restaurant car for any food. I think it went once a week moscow-berlin-Nice also.
The last time I travelled on an overnight train was also a Russian one from Moscow to Brussels Midi, quite a few years ago, before the new Berlin Hbf was built. So it was via Brest, where the bogie change was done, then Warsaw, Berlin, Hanover, Köln, Aachen, Brussels Midi. ISTR it was 2 nights on board. I can remember how good the track maintenance was on the DB between Hanover & Köln. It’s quite a curved route, and they allow a relatively high cant deficiency, hence a higher speed than some railways would permit, but the ride was much smoother than in Poland, notwithstanding the speed on that stretch.
Superbe vidéo !! et un grand bravo pour l'effort investi dans le montage ! c'est pro :)
It's great, in theory. In practice, trains in Germany and Austria are a lot of times delayed and/or canceled. So if you have an important appointment in the morning, taking the train is too unreliable at this point. Hope this changes, as I'm a diehard train fan, but let's be realistic.
Which is why the operator is OBB instead of the lousy DB.
日本からアップを楽しみにしていました!
You missed pointing out that the French Infrastructure Minister was with you on the train speaking both in Berlin and Paris! Clear committment!
Super videó!
I met someone here yesterday in the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale - who knew about your model train CZcams channel but had never watched THIS CZcams channel!
We were standing in the trains + Mac magazine section at the Hinsdale News Agency.
That shop is about 80 feet from the BNSF Triple Track Raceway.
Metra commuter trains and Amtrak trains passed while we were talking..
J'etais a l'inauguration avec les ambassadeurs de France, d'Autriche et Clement Beaune, invite par l'Autriche. Dommage qu'on ne soit pas vus.
Perhaps NIGHTJET could run a night service from London St. Pancras International to Berlin and other cities in Germany.
The basic problem would be the availability of rolling stock permitted to operate via Eurotunnel. Quite an investment in new equipment, plus the usual border bureaucracy.
No a nightjet, but they are planing a Eurostar from the UK to Frankfurt.
Thanks for the video, Thibault. A little comment about your new style video - I'm sorry but I preferred the sub title style. I find it easier to understand - not your accent, but sometimes I would like to see what the place names are or to pause on details. Plus then you also get the real sounds of the railway. There are so many people doing voice over videos so I think you get lost in amongst them all. Anyway, just my opinion. I've been loving your videos for ages!
You're getting really really good at this. Keep going!
Yesss the DB PTSD I got going from Hambourg to Paris XDXDXD
Lol. They gave this train the old Moscow-Paris train time thread.
I traveled Orient express (Nr 260/262) Budapest-Paris.Then between Strasbourg-Paris max speed 160 km/H,was hauled BB 15000.Strasbourg depart time am 6:20, Paris arrive am 10:24.Back route Paris depart time pm 5:49, Strasbourg arrive time pm 9:48.It was faster than now.
You heard on your critics and now your videos while your speaking are awesome. Speaking brings so much more life in the video 👍
Great video, sncf drastically cut its sleeper services ,relies heavily on its tgv network, to connect France, needs to look at obb nightjet operations, took a big gamble on taking over European sleeper networks from DB,Sbb etc,in 2016,like the approach on commentary, rather than subtitles, lovely scenery from South of 🇫🇷
i was there!!!
Moi qui n'aime pas l'avion, ça peut être une bonne alternative !
Don’t listen to the haters
Thibault. I love the voice-overs, and your English is excellent. I can understand everything without problem.
"Your English is excellent"?! Come on... His English grammar, arguably, but not his English pronunciation. It's an earsore. It's not being a "hater" to say this, it's just healthy realism. He'd better make his video in proper French than in this kind of English. Or then, in written English (subtitles).
@@yagi3925Well said. His spoken English is awful.
@@yagi3925 His English is absolutely fine. I bet its much better than your French.
"Like sleeping at your Grandmother's house" sounds like a great marketing tagline...
It will be interesting how they will shunt cars when new sets come in!
France needs more locomotives that can take this nightjet in and out of paris maybe a vectron?
Siemens is working on certificating the Vectron to be used in France. Or DB has some BR181 which used to run on the French 25KV network. Or their Tauruses are dual AC too, but those need certification too for France and the french signaling system.
I believe that the Russian service from Paris to Moscow had a good restaurant car I think provided by a Polish company?
I now it’s all about economics but the trains could do with full restaurant cars serving cooked food moderately priced to be a wonderful service.
European Sleeper has announced a €1m sharefunding round from December 27, to support marketing and sales for its extension from Berlin to Dresden and Praha from March 25 and the introduction of a dining car. Investors will get a discount on future purchases of train tickets. The operator says it has now run more than 150 night trains on the Brussels - Berlin route and transported over 30 000 passengers.
Great movie, but please go back to the old ways of movies without voice commentary. Only ambient sounds and subtitles. 🥰
I agree 100%.
ÖBB do the thing that should be normal in European Union connecting a few countries by train
A very special video, Thibault. Excellent narrative, very interesting. FIVE stars for this one.
Ça aurait été mieux une vidéo non commenté comme avent.
This is similar journey length to Brisbane to Sydney but they only have one service a day and there is only one carriage with twin berth cabins. The rest of the train is 2+2 seating carriages. It runs overnight to Brisbane but arrives at 3.53am! It returns to Sydney as a daylight train leaving at 5am. This train in Europe has much better arrival time but do they have any single berths or accessible berths on it?
