@@jonny6415 This is why we need market liberalization in our railways. Competition is the key towards better services and cheaper prices. Just look at the cases of Italy and Spain. They have lots of operators competing with each other and that has reduced prices substantially. Riding the high-speed train in Spain or Italy is cheaper than in any other EU country.

@@paul_ko liberalization can be done tastefully, not fully free market capitalism. government writes out tenders for routes timetables and such and private companies compete to win it. gov will still be in control of everything, there'll be just loads more options, different quality and price range rides which is overall better for the consumer

@@guerreiro943 Basically, I agree with you. But, by all means, liberalization of national railways should NOT be done like in Germany since the 90s. The company is still in the hands of the German state to 100%. This can only go wrong as the state and its government are dramatically failing to manage an efficient and successful company combined with affordable ticket prices, a suitable trackage all across the country and intelligent schedules for travellers.
This state-owned company DB has become nothing but a disgrace for Germany since its pseudo-liberalization. And it even seems to get worse every single year. My grandfather, may he rest in peace, was a railwayman and he often told stories about the good old times of the former "Deutsche Bundesbahn" between 1952 and 1993. He was really proud of working there in different positions all these years, it has been a huge part of his life. I remember him complaining constantly about the so-called 'liberalization' which followed his retirement in the 90s.
But actually, this has not been a liberalization, it was just a call to a state-owned company to gain profits without really changing the structures of it and just with a semblance of real competition. Managerial staff who doesn't seem to have a clue of what they're doing which is typical for state-owned companies who are suddenly forced to chalk up profits with very little competition. Tracks have been demolished within the last decades because they've been accused not to be viable enough anymore. This development has become a total failure and reached its climax within the last couple of years. And what are the DB chairmen doing? They are paying themselves out some bonuses of five millions € or more only for 2023 while the staff such as engine drivers or conductors seem to be at their mental and physical limits. According to my experience within the last months, I'd estimate that one out of three trains in Germany is arriving on time right now...and you need to be lucky enough that it didn't get completely cancelled.

Perhaps the most important point is the man from DB admitting that their abandoning night trains was a terrible mistake. I say it now for all to hear. The most spacious couchettes on the market in all of Europe are the 4-berth CFR couchettes running on the Dacia 347/346 train between Vienna and Bucharest. Those are huge, have 2 windows (which you can open) and space inside like you couldn't imagine. I suggest you all give it a try. Bonus. There is also a full MAV dining car between Viena and Budapest

The most spacious BY FAR are Moscow - St. Petersburg "luxury" single couchettes on the "Red Arrow" train. That's if we're talking europe. EU side it'd probably be Finnish night rail trains or Moscow - Kaliningrad "Amber" service which provides stops in Lithuania (yes, in 2023. Quite a bit of Russia/EU dual citizens use that as a primary service between Russia and EU). This is due to the wider gauge which leads to wider wagons and wider couchettes.

I've taken the sleeper before, and it was very comfortable, the bed was great, compartment was clean, and the scenery outside was amazing. @CalinFR Před 6 měsíci +1

@@JordanVTheWorld yup, it's a bummer. Since 2023, CFR removed all of their full dining cars stock from the rails and used only these tiny bar versions. They are refurbishing them and looking to bring them back on the rails starting with 2025. With regards to the toilets, the protocol of cleaning them is not well established. Many times they start the trip dirty without being touched by staff for the whole journey

So Germany needs ÖBB's help to establish a decent connection between Berlin and Paris... ;) Just as you said, only 8 minutes to change trains can be critical while travelling with DB during the day... :D I'm somewhere in the middle between Paris and Berlin, I think Paris is even a bit closer from here in the West of Germany. Fortunately, we've got the Thalys departing and arriving here when it comes to Paris or any another place in France by train, even if it's more than 20 years ago now since I made use of it the last time when I was youngish. ;)

It makes sense to have daily night trains that, as you said, allow passengers to sleep through the night and wake up near their destinations. Sure, there must be many gaps that have yet to be filled, but it's a good start. Yeah I agree. I really hope Copenhagen where I'm from gets put back on the map at some point. Our CityNightLine service which went to Basel, Amsterdam, and Prague was cancelled back in 2014. Since then the only thing we've gotten have been seasonal couchette only night trains by Snälltåget to Berlin and the Austrian Alps since 2021. SJ's Euronight train also passes through but during the middle of the night and sometimes doesnt even stop, so it doesnt really count.

This connection is more important than all others at this moment. Why? Because it simply gives residents of Central and Eastern Europe a chance to connect with Western Europe in a reasonable time and with a minimum number of transfers. For example, I love backpacking and if I want to get to the Pyrenees from Poland, I can do it by three trains (including two night ones) and still have a lot of time to explore Berlin and Paris. How cool is that. And adding the fact that traveling with a large backpack I would pay a similar (if not higher) price with airlines, the train now makes even more sense.

We have to be thankful to ÖBB that, when so many night trains in Europe were cancelled, they didn't see this as an omen, but as a business opportunity. CNL was cool in the sense that a consist would contain Austrian, Swiss, German, Czech and other carriages, all in the same train (really fun to model, let me tell you). But it went the way of the dodo.
Until, that is, the Austrians stepped in. Austria is not a very large country, and it doesn't have a large population, but they single-handedly revived a much-loved travel experience that everybody else thought was dead.

Very good cover on this journey. You're right, the 6-bed couchettes are indeed smart, did several travels between Stockholm - Paris Nord, and the night train was either between Copenhague or Hamburg to Paris, also via ferry, for a perfect leg stretch and food+wine supply when travelling south. Cheers and Joyeux Noël

I took that Russian train a few years ago moscow-berlin-paris, just the Berlin to Paris part. It was nice but I believe you had to go to the Polish restaurant car for any food. I think it went once a week moscow-berlin-Nice also.

The last time I travelled on an overnight train was also a Russian one from Moscow to Brussels Midi, quite a few years ago, before the new Berlin Hbf was built. So it was via Brest, where the bogie change was done, then Warsaw, Berlin, Hanover, Köln, Aachen, Brussels Midi. ISTR it was 2 nights on board. I can remember how good the track maintenance was on the DB between Hanover & Köln. It’s quite a curved route, and they allow a relatively high cant deficiency, hence a higher speed than some railways would permit, but the ride was much smoother than in Poland, notwithstanding the speed on that stretch.

It's great, in theory. In practice, trains in Germany and Austria are a lot of times delayed and/or canceled. So if you have an important appointment in the morning, taking the train is too unreliable at this point. Hope this changes, as I'm a diehard train fan, but let's be realistic.

I met someone here yesterday in the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale - who knew about your model train CZcams channel but had never watched THIS CZcams channel!
We were standing in the trains + Mac magazine section at the Hinsdale News Agency.
That shop is about 80 feet from the BNSF Triple Track Raceway.
Metra commuter trains and Amtrak trains passed while we were talking..

The basic problem would be the availability of rolling stock permitted to operate via Eurotunnel. Quite an investment in new equipment, plus the usual border bureaucracy.

Thanks for the video, Thibault. A little comment about your new style video - I'm sorry but I preferred the sub title style. I find it easier to understand - not your accent, but sometimes I would like to see what the place names are or to pause on details. Plus then you also get the real sounds of the railway. There are so many people doing voice over videos so I think you get lost in amongst them all. Anyway, just my opinion. I've been loving your videos for ages!

Great video, sncf drastically cut its sleeper services ,relies heavily on its tgv network, to connect France, needs to look at obb nightjet operations, took a big gamble on taking over European sleeper networks from DB,Sbb etc,in 2016,like the approach on commentary, rather than subtitles, lovely scenery from South of 🇫🇷

"Your English is excellent"?! Come on... His English grammar, arguably, but not his English pronunciation. It's an earsore. It's not being a "hater" to say this, it's just healthy realism. He'd better make his video in proper French than in this kind of English. Or then, in written English (subtitles).

Siemens is working on certificating the Vectron to be used in France. Or DB has some BR181 which used to run on the French 25KV network. Or their Tauruses are dual AC too, but those need certification too for France and the french signaling system.

I now it’s all about economics but the trains could do with full restaurant cars serving cooked food moderately priced to be a wonderful service.

This is similar journey length to Brisbane to Sydney but they only have one service a day and there is only one carriage with twin berth cabins. The rest of the train is 2+2 seating carriages. It runs overnight to Brisbane but arrives at 3.53am! It returns to Sydney as a daylight train leaving at 5am. This train in Europe has much better arrival time but do they have any single berths or accessible berths on it?
