Thank you so much for your very informative videos. I never would have dared to prune a fruit tree this severely to maintain size. It's worked great in my small yard.
Thank you. Building a backyard garden. 5 feet height is what I want. I have several trees that bloom but no fruit. Nothing to pollinate them. Very informative.
Please keep the videos coming! They are the best. I have approximately 60 Dave Wilson trees in my yard and with each and every video I learn something new that I apply to my trees. Thanks again!!
Outstanding video .. many hobbyists give iffy advice on pruning, I have a small, varied stand of 2 to 3 year old fruit trees, some of which produced fruit this year. I want to prune heavily to shape and control size, and some say only take twenty percent or the tree will give up the ghost .. I loved your aggressive pruning, that's what I need to do but I've been uncertain .. now I'm much more comfortable about proceeding .. I buy mostly Dave Wilson stock.. thanks.
This video came just in time. Here in MaineI we don't have the weather you have, but I did experiment with the multiple planting pluots, nectarines and peaches. It is hard to cut but I will give it a shot. Thanks for the vids and please keep them coming. Any suggestions for Maine growing will be appreciated.
I have read that winter pruning will produce a much stronger response than summer, so you should only remove center growth and the three D's during winter but not prune for height. Looks like you are pruning for height and vigor in both summer and winter. Also, how do you know fruiting wood vs. nonfruiting wood or what young spurs look like?! So glad I found your videos!
Have you ever had experience pruning seedless che? I planted one this spring and pruned it back a bit this summer to encourage branching. Any recommendation on ideal height? Are they any different from traditional fruit trees? Also, I planted two Fuju persimmons as well. Can I keep them around 5-6 as well?
Thanks so much for an awesome and informative video! While you were pruning, were you attending more to bud direction when you made your cuts or just height? Also, do you think a mulberry tree volunteer could be dwarfed by pruning?
miukat O We attend to height and bud direction for the most part. Just make sure the fruit set and quality justifies keeping the seedling or should it be grafted over to a cultivar. Only time will tell.
Thanks for the video! Any thoughts on when it makes sense to shape the tree as a modified central leader (or even central leader) as opposed to the vase shape that you're making here?
When you plant the tree, the first cuts you make are the most important for however you plan to finish the tree. Not many varieties are grown central leader, some apples, and of course for espaliers. In which case you would he’s it back much less, or not at all.
I have a few apple trees that are about 4 years young, and growing in a central leader formation. I would rather them grow open center like you demonstrate, but the nursery I got them from suggests the central lead style. Should I still go with my desired open center growth style? Right now they are about 6 feet tall and maybe an inch and half diameter at the base.
How do you prune if you have multiple trunks instead of 1? My son didn't know what kind of tree it was and was mowing along with the lawn. Now it is 10' tall!
I want to do a pear or Sone fruit bush like waist high tops should I mix stone fruit and pear its about 15 ft long I want it to be 1,1/2 to 2 foot ft wide
Just got a persimmon tree from Dave Wilson nursery. Do we need to prune it? Person said it should fruit next year. Central leader about 10 ft tall but 8 scaffolds only at about 4-6 ft of the tree. Should I top it off and thin out the scaffolds to 3-5?
10’ tall bare root? Personally I would top it to 4’ if you want it to survive and thrive. No retailer should let a tree leave the nursery that big unless it’s container grown for a season or two.
@@DaveWilsonTrees went outside to measure the small scaffolds. thanks, it wasn’t a bare tree. It has about 8 scaffolds /smaller branches shooting out but only at the 3-5 ft range height of the tree so just in the middle. The tree looked a bit awkward with such a tall central leader in relation to where the scaffolds were. There were not any growing branches /scaffolds above the 5ft mark or so, just the tall central leader. Thus it was ‘bare’ above the 5ft mark to the 10ft Mark. I didn’t know how much to prune the central leader down to but today I decided it would be safe for me to prune it to 6ft tall and if I need to lower it I can. The scaffolds are coming out of each bud so very close together, 2-3 inches apart. I’m determining whether to prune off some scaffolds to get it to only 3-5 scaffolds.
Hi ..please i want to be sure when i pruning friut trees ? ..i live in Australia , now is winter , i have many kind of fruit trees , please how old of fruit trees i can pruning ? ..thank you
i live in america anexcept for certain desiese proplem you should be abl to proune year round. far as I know you have a preetty dry climet. prune away and don't put any tar wich will hold mostioure. theered is always google for your specific family/ genus
We just bought a house with two pomegranate trees and they are just a mess. Branches are dead and there are a lot of them crossing each other.....LOTS of little tiny twigs everywhere....how do I prune these things to make sure I get fruit this fall? I am in Vegas.
Remove dead wood, thin out crossing branches, top it a little and keep it topped to the height you want. Pome's want to grow as a clumped bush, so let it.
when is the best time to plant apple's tree?, I have some of them but I don't know when to plant also I don't know if is correct pruning before to plant
thanks a lot, this info help me to plant my trees and I'll follow your instructions, and what about caring those plants?, when and how much fertilize?, is possible to use manure?
I noticed that your trees were planted approx 5 feet apart. That's awfully close for sub miniature trees. I suspect that those are smaller than subminiature. What's the maximum height and diameter these trees will grow to if left unpruned? I know that you're pruning ro restrain the height and width. How many trees of that size can you plant per acre, assuming mechanical cultivation and a lane between rows to allow a small tractor to access?
L O F E N O I A L O F Plant a multi-bud with the smallest graft facing southwestward and prune that graft back about a third. Then prune the other grafts, or varieties, back to match the height of the smaller, weakest graft. Then keep them pruned even as the grow.
Dave Wilson Nursery that sounds perfect ! Also when planting these fruit trees in clay rich soil , how deep and wide do you recommend for the holes ; and what composition of soil is best ? I’m experimenting with various soil recipes ( 33:33:34 , coco coir: perlite: compost / 2:1:1 potting soil : top soil : compost / 2:1:1 top soil : coco coir : perlite + fertilizer + beneficial bacteria ) Thank you very much !
L O F E N O I A L O F if you have clay soil you probably have poor drainage. Poor drainage can kill fruit trees. You might want to elevate the planting. A raised bed of just a foot will do. We don’t recommend amending the planting hole, bad idea especially if you have clay soil. Add all compost and fertilizer to the top of the ground.
@@DaveWilsonTrees WOW ! I did not realize that, even with amendment to the clay rich soil , it's not a good idea to plant the fruit there. As far as the 1' above ground mound for the fruit trees, how would you recommend making it so that soil erosion does not occur ? Maybe I could use a circle of clay soil as a circular barrier around the 1' high well drained soil mound. Thanks so much !
We've made raised beds out of river rock and redwood boards. A simple mound works also. You can use your native soil for the raised bed. czcams.com/video/v2nI0k79Ec0/video.html
My orange tree age 3 never lost it's leaves. It is February now and the weather never got very cold and my tree is blooming. Is it too late to shorten the branches? I live in zone 9 by Galveston. I want it short and the height is 6 1/2 feet.
Not too late. Just take it down in thirds. Take a third off the top this winter. Take more off after fruit set this spring, thin the fruit and prune at same time. Then the following winter take more off.
Would be nice if these videos were numbered to observe how these fruit trees progress from season to season. Great videos and so informative!

Scratch off a little bark with your fingernail. If brown underneath, it's dead. If green, give it more time.
My nectarine looks like the ones in this video, but it is april 30th. Do you think it is dead? I live in texas on the coast.

Orange is an evergreen. Fine to prune in the spring and summer.
No explanation of the terms spur wood, fruiting wood, flowering wood etc and how to tell them apart.
