2 Kite Flying Exercises to Increase Kitesurfing Confidence

  • Here are a couple of important kite-flying exercises I use every day. Designed for people who want to build their kite flying confidence and comfort level.
    Overcoming fear of the unknown helps people progress. Understanding 90% of kiting is kite control, these kitesurfing exercises are not designed as tricks but as skills to practise so that if and when you need them, you know how. As you progress in kiting, they might become part of your everyday riding too. (I use them every day)
    These two kite-flying skills significantly reduce fears and increase confidence in flying a kite.
    It helps people (if I accidentally do this, how will it feel)

    BEEER!!
    As I mentioned in the video, Thanks to everyone that bought us beers from the website! You are legends! We have been loving it!!!!
    Most recently from Mark Thompson who bought us a 6-pack. I'm literally drinking a Coopers Pacific Ale right now while I type this! Thanks Mark!
    Kite Flying Skill One: Loop the kite. Controversial and not often taught in lessons. This kite flying exercise is about the kite movement itself and not a jump. When you loop a kite, it can have a strong power gradient.
    The power of the kite starts with nothing, then quickly goes to max power, then ends with no power again in the neutral position
    Once you get used to the power delivery that the kite loop does, it's not scary at all and helps riders feel significantly more confident.
    Kite Flying Skill Two. Knowing when you can let go of the bar.
    Letting go of the bar is your friend. Letting go of the bar in a controlled manner Helps riders relax with an understanding that you don't have to be clutching and actively steering the kite endlessly.

      I agree. Learning on a frozen lake. I have never even seen a kite in action other than me and a friend learning from videos on a frozen lake. Going for decent winds that afternoon. Not many days that cooperate. Thanks a bunch

    One of the best and most sincere kite surfing videos I've seen. So useful for me as a novice, I'll try these before I start trying my first pops and toe-sides. Thanks a ton from Turkey.

    Best on-lime instruction there is! A local instructor had me body-drag looping this past summer, exactly as you describe. Downloop transitions seemed easy after that. Your videos are always required viewing among our local group and the benefits are obvious on the water.

    As a new Kiter, these videos have helped me really understand some of my mistakes like getting lunch on the beach. This made me really gun-shy. I feel so much more relaxed and confident after watching. Thank you so much for your help.

    Great tips for confidence for a beginner like me. On Saturday, without wanting it, double loop on the beach, I released the bar for safety and it continued flying 😊

    Why do you have to sheet in before looping vs looping it in the position you’re riding? Great video!!!!

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  Před rokem +5

      Hey Martin, its all about the speed that the kite will loop. The more you sheet in, the tighter the kite will loop as it increases the steering response of the kite. The faster the loop, the less power it generates as it has less time in the powerzone. If you sheet-out and try and loop, the kite will loop much slower in a big circle, potentially even hit the ground and generate a strong pull for longer (even whilst sheeted out)
      You can of course loop the kite somewhere in-between sheeting in and out. It's actually a good thing to try for yourself while body dragging. try different bar positions while looping and you will feel the different timing and power delivery. Hope that helps

    For someone that’s never been kitesurfing but watching this because they are wanting to try it… what is the purpose of looping the kite? Is it to change direction? How do you get the kite to 12 vs. the 9 to generate pull? This is for someone who’s never done this sport but wanting to start and understand how to control the kite.
    What is considered low power winds, 3 kts?
    What wind power is considered too much for a beginner?

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  Před rokem

      Hey, thanks for the questions. the loop is used to generate power, or keep the kite flying when riding downwind. With the wind strength, 12 knots is considered light, 25 knots and above is considered strong! Hope that helps

    During my first kite lessons in Mexico the wind was quite slow and the kiteloop is the first thing the instructor taught me to actually get me going. It's not that hard at all, so makes a lot of sense to teach it. That being said, I have seen "the videos" and it isn't entirely clear how this can turn into the death loop. Is it holding unto the bar after a full 360 degrees? Wondering whether one can practice this with a trainer kite as well? Probably not as it has only power lines.

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing  Před rokem +1

      Perfect! Glad you got to try the loop with an instructor! To answer your question, a death loop is an unintentional looping. Death loops occur typically when a line gets caught around something, like the wingtip of the kite, or the hook on your harness, or the end of the bar, among others. When that happens it sends the kite into a loop and will continuously loop until the line is free. In almost all cases to save yourself from a deathloop, its important to identify it is happening early and fire the safety release. It is quite rare, but if your kite starts looping by itself without your hand steering it, fire the safety release. Hope that helps.

    So funny to listen to Australians talk. It sounds like the put an R in words like "dont." Sounds like they say "dorn't".. lol literally so many words they sound like they've inserted an R but then when they say "beer" where we put alot of emphasis on the rrrrrr the say "beea" or something 🤣 Anyway, here I am watching kitesurfing videos in the dead of winter.. sure wish I had a place to go that looked like that! Wow! All our places are deep and the waves are so choppy out where the wind has no obstructions. Makes it really difficult to learn.
