In this video I answer a question by a CZcams viewer that asked how to practice jazz chord changes on the trumpet.
I use the beginnings of a Joe Henderson song called A Shade of Jade as an example in this trumpet lesson.
I go to the piano in this lesson because playing the piano is a great first step when learning a new song and when learning how to play chord changes period.
Press play, enjoy, and share. . . and of course, keep the questions coming.
Im so gratefull and you are so kind and generous. Im 65 hope I can learn to play at 70
matias lerenaclaussen I’m 74 and started 2 years ago 👍🤪
You make learning an instrument fun! Wonderful soul, gracious, generous, and it shows in your sound!
Thank you for your kind words!
maaaaaan ur amazing! i just started with this beautiful instrument. love from Argentina!
I don't even play trumpet, I play piano but I am pretty curious about the instrument.
I've commented on your videos before, but I had to comment again. What you are doing for the education of others is awesome. You've obviously worked very hard to get where you are. Thanks for sharing your "hard earned" talents.
Tim Curry thanks for your kind words! They mean a lot to me.
Great teacher, great trumpet player... thanx for uploading!
You are another level , you make it look easy !!! Maestro!
Thank you very much!
Awesome spoken trumpet sound thank you🎶🎺👏👏
This is great. I'm glad I found your video. Definitely going to apply.
Oh dude, you made my day!
Amazing mate! Keep going!
this looks like a great trumpet resource. I can't wait to finish work and try some lessons out . thank you .
TheSleeveDj thanks very much! Please subscribe.
Fantastic trumpet playing; keep up the great work you are doing.
Thanks for the compliment! I will keep pressing on! I appreciate you!
I will probably get to work on my chord's improvisation...Thank you so much ...
You have made it easy for me...
Wonderful! Glad to help out!
Thank you for this content,
I've been into music for 22 years and I've never tried to play the trumpet. Lately I ve been looking for some exercises to get used to this approach to music, you know, learning the basics , before attempting to play. It's gonna takeme a while to play and practice scales like the ones you play in this exercise, but watching things like this, keeps me inspired. Greetings from Brasil!
There is a video on my channel that talks about long tones. That is an excellent place to start! It will allow you time to get to know the instrument while building your strength. Also, look into a book called Lip Flexibility by Earl Irons.
Thank you very much, Mr. Davis.
Nice lesson.
Good man Chris!
Im a begginer and this video is potentially Juicy! Thanks again (its like chinese for me)
My pleasure. Use this process on the blues. I think a whole new world will open for you.
dikkind001 😂
Very instructive!
Thank you! That's what I'm going for; I hope it was helpful for you.
Thanks man
Great video!
Thank you, Charles!
Awesome video, I'm a mostly classical trumpet player who is just learning to improvise. I have decent range (High g above C above staff if I'm lucky), but any notes above high D seem to not come out with a full sound. They sound almost quieter and fuzzy, any help with that?
I'm a high school trumpet player and you really helped me with this video. There's still a question on my mind though, how do I know what notes are standard (no guiding tones or whatnot) per chord change? For example: if I'm playing over a Cmaj, do I only play the notes in C major chord? The notes in the C major scale?
Great video, what trumpet is that?
Its ok I slowed IT and could copy it ..was E G B E G E D G E B E.
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
love your videos. there are so less videos for trumpet. jazz and blues trumpet. it will be great if you make more blues or jazz licks tutorials. Thank you!!!
You've got it! Thanks for asking!
Your sound is very clear! I love it, but my question is, what type of mouthpiece are you using?
Thanks for the compliment, Charles! I currently play a Monette B3S3, however, I'll probably change soon. Not sure to what. I just purchased a new trumpet and I'm not convinced the the mouthpiece and trumpet are matching up well. We'll see.
Awesome video! I've been trying to figure this out for months. I'll be sure to try this. What horn is that, tho? You're tone with it is amazing
Edwards
Hey Mr. Davis!! Love the videos. If you could do a part 2 of this video on how to connect the chord changes into lines that would be fantastic. Also, could you give me a call? it's very important!
Dawon! What's happening! You've got it!
cool
Hi there, been watching some of your videos and I love the sound. I'm trying to write some blues/jazz/gypsy jazz (haven't really decided yet; it's a bit all over the place) with the final product being primarily MIDI. Which means I need to write out all the notes in advance. I have a trumpet in this piece (which is a darker, slower version of Day Tripper) and I'm not really sure what to do with it. I love some of what you're playing but don't really understand how you come up with it.
Take for example what you play at about 2:53 here, over the E-flat major 7th sharp 11th. How did you choose your notes? Why do they sound jazzy?
Note that I'm approaching this from the 'other side', so to speak. I'm quite expert regarding classical music theory, but I never formally learnt jazz, and there's just so many different types that it can difficult to know where to start.
If you have the time to help me a bit here, I'd be grateful. Either way, great videos altogether.
Where are you from? I'm going to host a live chat in the near future. Maybe we can speak about this. Are you subscribed to the channel? Talk to you soon, hopefully. Great question!
Simple question - when changes are written in a trumpet solo part (i.e. Cornet Pocket) are they written as concert key or in Bflat for trumpet? (Do I need to transpose to B Flat or just use the changes in the key that is written?) Thank!
If you’re reading a trumpet chart (as in your example) then there is no need to transpose; it is already written for trumpet. Thanks, John, for your question!
Hi Chris, I just subscribed to you, I would like to learn more about what alternatives to play over chord changes, as in this video
Thank you for subscribing, Gregory! I’ll add the requested subject to the content list.
Love the videos! I just started playing. I could hit high notes immediately last week as a novice but now I can't and its frustrating! What am I doing wrong?
I've noticed that a lot of non-horn players can almost immediately hit screaming notes on a trumpet, but they are typically by accident and with a poor embouchure. It can be frustrating, but learning hit them correctly will save your chops and put you in command rather than leave you hoping for a lucky accident.
Explain how to play the tune at the beggining of this video and others..PLEASE EE
Hey Chris! Should I get a Prana or a classic for a Monette mouthpiece? Its going to be my first time buying one and I'm not sure which one to get. Getting a B3S3 resonance by the way. Thank you if you can help me with my choice!
Saw Rafhs call the Monette office. They'll help! That's what I did. I know that they recommend if you've never played their equipment before to start with classic.
Thanks a lot :D
Hi Chris. Do you have video on this same subject for someone like me that doesn’t play piano and has no idea how to practice chords?
No, I do not because this IS the way we should practice chords even though we are horn players. I didn't play piano either (and still don't really). A trumpet can not play chords, as you know, because it is a melodic instrument and not harmonic. But, this is the work that we need to put in to grow. You don't need to be a good piano player but the process of figuring out where everything is will help you grow significantly. Just go note-by-note, chord-by-chord, day-by-day. I know this isn't a desirable answer but it is the path. Slow is fast and fast is slow. I'm sorry this question slipped passed me for a year. Please, keep practicing and good luck on your journey! If you want help along then please reach out!
@@ChrisDavisTrumpet Thanks for getting back to me and for your reply! It’s been a while since I’ve watched this video, so I’ll give it another look and start looking for reasonably priced electric keyboards for that purpose.
Great!!!! Thank you!
Certainly! Let me know how this works for you.
So playing the chords for Trumpet means playing arpeggio, breaking the chord into notes, also playing the chord, how many actual notes constitute a chord on the trumpet? Thanks
Hi Terrance! You've got the right idea about this. To answer your question, technically, a chord is three or more notes. Thanks for asking and please reach out anytime.
hi Chris, what type of mouthpiece do you use? Thanks!
1.5 C for Bb Trumpet with Slap
love it the love the sound can you write that melody your playing i read music
Thanks Ray! I suppose that I can write it out. Many have asked about it. See if you can learn it by ear first and slow the video down if you need to. It will be more beneficial to you to learn by ear. But, yes, I’ll write it out too.
yes write it thank you @@ChrisDavisTrumpet
How do I increase my range?
Jeremy Morfin great question! I'll make a video about this as well. Until then, here are some tips. I assume you're talking about high notes when you ask about range but also consider low notes. Work on that, too. Improve embouchure strength. Finally, learn to know what the sound of the note is before you play it. These things will help you. I'll make a video to explain further and to demonstrate. Thanks for asking this question!
How did you get yourself to the point your at now with being able to just play all these slick lines just like that? What should i practice everyday to be able to do that?
Hi Nick! There are two parts to the answer of your question. First, is the boring stuff that nobody likes to do but ALL OF THE GREATS do the boring stuff. For example, long tones, lip slurs, tonguing exercises, lip bends. This allows you to learn to control the trumpet so that when you want to you can play anything "just like that!" Secondly, listen to the type of music that you wish to master . . . . a lot . . . and learn songs and vocabulary of the genre. Thanks for asking!
@@ChrisDavisTrumpet Thanks!
love your work on the trumpet am a older gentleman a played the trumpet 37 years ago was very good am back playing now and am having problems with my chop cant stay up high very long and am also have flase teeth is that my problem?
arthur manning I don't know much about having false teeth to be able to comment about it. I can tell you that Chet Baker continued to play after he lost his teeth, so, there is a model that you may follow. The other stuff is a matter of building strength and flexibility in the chops. There are some books made to help that part of your playing.
How are things coming along, Arthur?
Is there any way you could make a video or give me any advice on playing pedal tones?
Call Me Gamer yes, you've got it! I'll make a video on this topic as well. Pedal tones can be tricky.
Chris Davis Thanks!
Hey man! What is that mouthpiece called please? Would be greatly appreciated!
Skrorren Monette
Chris Davis thanks, keep up the great work
how are you able to come up with trumpet runs? could you probably post tips on how to do that?
Sure, I can. Thanks for the question!
Sure I can post a video. Great topic and a lot of people ask about that.
What is you instrument? I love its sound.
The sound is all me! 😆 but I play Edwards Instruments.
How do you learn the chords to a tune by ear?
carrot top I'll add this question to the video production list for you.
Awesome. thanks
On this video are you transposing, or playing exactly the same chords? Trumpet is in Bb. Piano in C.
Nelson Sanchez Villamil I'm transposing.
Thanks. Great work. Very nice.
can you make a video about how to make smoky jazz sound on trumpet? and doodle tongue
Sure, thanks for asking! Clark Terry taught me how to doodle tongue many years ago. I understand the concept but I don't really use it in my trumpet playing. However, I can still teach the concept for you. No problem!
Thanks Chris! Can you do jazz lick video for trumpet weekly? or share improvisation technique weekly? For example, jazz lick of the week..., this really help jazz beginner like me.. also help us improve week by week
+Chow KokChin I agree. this will be great. Make some licks of blues or jazz weekly please. Thanks from Russia
I was going to comment on your sound and tone. So sweet.
Chow KokChin thanks for your questions! I will create these videos for you. I'll need to work up to a weekly schedule. Thanks again!

hai.. do you habe a part
Here is a link to a lead sheet: freejazzinstitute.com/uploads/20130911091849_HalfNelson.pdf
??? Do I have a part for what?
hello.. from London.. fiona.. okay until her death in 2013 i was mentored by Laurie Frink.. amazing human being more than anything else.... so i have been playing flexus and bai lin on a daily basis but have for years been not great with chord progressions which has really hindered my playing .. solos.. i was first classical years ago and i don't have natural ability to take in the chords or arppegios.. and its leaving me in a bit of a hole,....
Hi Fiona! Nice meeting you here! I've only heard nice things about Laurie Frink! I wish that I had studied with her but she wasn't on my radar until after she passed on. I use her book Flexus and it has helped me so much! What do you want to ask about chord changes?
Chris Davis there is a difference between the classical way of scales and a shorthand way via bai lin .. one can play Eb one way and bai lin another.. I know by ear it’s a tuning issue... they sound difficult.. but which would you use? Does that make sense??
I just realized some things....
What did you realize?
In this video alone you used “the lick” twice at least
jakemf1 Ha! I didn't notice! Long live the lick! Lol!
not a bad thing :)
hard ass instrument. I can't even play one note
stay with it!
It's official; I can't play. 😞
matamba kaalima we all have to start somewhere. Don't give up; keep at it!
