  • Air Manager 4 now supports their G1000 natively for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The install and setup are now straightforward, and the cost is reasonable. Air Manager is flexible and helps to enhance the immersiveness of flight simulation.
    Gear list (all prices approximate in USD at time of video posting):
    13.3 Touch Panel 1920x1080 = $135 (x2)
    Knobster = $110
    Flight Velocity monitor mount = $50 (x2)
    Air Manager 4 = $76

    Ivan, your channel is amazing! Thank you for the time you put into sharing.
    I recently setup my own 5 screen simulator. I ran into problem after problem with the touchscreens. I looked to comments on this CZcams video and countless Simulator message boards for answers. I was amazed at how many individuals were having the same problems I was experiencing. Unfortunately, there was never an answer to their problems. I directly contacted several of these individuals and many had given up, others decided to live with the frustrations. That is why I wanted to share my solution in case you want to create a troubleshooting video about the touchscreens.
    I had previously purchased 2 "Prechen" generic screens. This is where I started to encounter my problems. They did not work as Advertised. I tried using 2 cables, 3 cables, new cables, adjusting windows settings, and graphic card settings. They failed miserably. The touch screen would only work sometimes, power would come and go, and resolution would change everytime I restarted the computer. I tried every possible solution I could find in any video, online chat forum or manufacturer call center technical help line. I struggled with the generic screens for a week, but ultimately I gave up and returned them.
    To replace the generic screens, I purchased 2 View Sonic 15.6 Inch 1080p Portable Monitors with IPS Touchscreen. They worked perfectly out of the box. They work perfectly everytime I turn on my machine. No b settings adjustments needed. They did cost double the price of the generic screens, but avoiding the hassle and headache was well worth it.
    I'm not trying to push a brand or product, but if you read any of the CZcams comments or Community board discussions, nearly every topic is about someone struggling with thier WIMAXIT or other generic brand touchscreens. It would be nice to help people know that thier problem is likely just thier generic screens and they will likely need to try a new brand. I know some people have found success with thier generic screens and that is great, but obviously the companies do not have a very high level of quality control with thier products.
    Hopefully this information will save someone countless hours of frustration like I had to endure.

      Awesome and congratulations, Ivan!!! Thank you for the encouraging words for my training, as well.
      If I may, I'd like to continue this conversation which regards to the setup still. (This is rather long so you may want to get lunch and then come back....)
      Little background first. I have very limited space so to get the large screens you have, is not feasible, especially since I want to remain married. In fact my (Amazon) shelving that I created for flight sim is just a little over 2 ft wide. That being said, I use a laptop, Turtle Velocity flight and throttle setup, Logitech pedals with adaptation to Cessna pedals, Logitech switch panel and multifunction panels. For 6 pack gauges, etc., I have an iPad mini 4 (in which the AM on it recognizes FS rather quickly and works great.)
      From the lack of space I have to work with, my plan is to sell the mutlifunction panel because I really only use it for flaps and I don't believe I'm needing it once I get a tablet setup made for autopilot, radios, etc.
      That being said, I'm wanting to purchase 1 (perhaps 2) Amazon Fire 8 tablet because it is a similar size as my iPad4 is and is less expensive than the 4. So, here the questions :
      Do I purchase the AM for the desktop in order to utilize the pop out to the both my secondary and soon to be third "monitor" - OR - do I just download it to the Fire 8 tablet and work it the same as what I currently have? (Before you answer -lol- here is the $100 main question) :
      What will work best for the knobster capabilities?
      I hope I asked the questions to where it doesn't cause more confusion.
      That's like when you had a school teacher that after you leave the classroom on the last day of the school year, you feel dumber than what you did before you went in on the 1st day -- and yes, that did happen. That's a different story.
      Thank you again, Ivan, for your time, especially after reading this rambling text.
      Stay safe.

      @@MI325A Matthew, I think you are on the right track. I am not sure about a few things: 1) When using Fire tablets (android based), do programs like SpaceDesk or Duet work? These are programs that extend the PC desktop to the tablets for those that don't know. I know that Duet on iPad works really well. I have not tried the others. 2) I am not sure if Knobster works with the native Android AM app. The knobster should work if you are using AM for Desktop and using a tablet as a monitor extender, but I have not tested this scenario personally.
      I think Air Manager for Desktop is a completely worthwhile purchase as you can grow with it. You may start simple and develop your setup as needed. In the big picture of flight training costs, it's a drop in the bucket.
      Here is another thought: The setup you have now sound great. If you want to take your. training to the next level, take a look at PilotEdge for comms. It's a pay service, and it's not cheap, but it's less than the cost of a canceled two plus hour flight lesson, and it is probably THE single biggest way sim flight can help actually PPL training.

    • @MI325A
      @MI325A Před rokem

      @@IvanSkyFlightHi, Ivan. I researched your thoughts on both SpaceDesk and Duet (Thank you). That being said, taking into consideration what you had also pointed out, along with what I found regarding the costs to run either of those 2 programs, I believe my best option would be to disregard the Fire tablets and spend the extra for iPad(s). I say that because of the monthly fees, etc., the costs would surpass the original "savings" of Fire over iPad with the AM and Knobster. Speaking of which....
      Then, another thought occurred with the software incompatibility (specifically Knobster) .... you remember those days back in computer games -- where you had to have the exact requirements or else you just bought another useless CD game to add to your collection because you just knew it would work - ah the days of early Windows, etc.. Granted, not that common nowadays, but I digress.
      So, viewing -- and reviewing -- your videos, I believe I will just follow your lead of using iPad, or even investing in the monitors that you have. (The reason I mentioned iPad is because of the multifunction such as surfing internet, etc.)
      Nonetheless, thank you again for your thoughts and suggestion. This includes the PilotEdge. When the time comes I may consider that, as well.
      Take care.

I have a triple monitor set up arranged horizontally on my desktop and use one of them to display the flight panels on whichever aircraft I may be flying.

      Thanks! As to your question of needing additional hardware: Yes with an asterix. To get the maximum benefit in terms of convenience and enjoyment, that monitor for your Air Manager panels needs to be a touch panel. Having said that, you can still click on a rotary device on Air Manager and then use the Knobster. My whole unstated goal of my setup is to minimally rely on my mouse.

My only difference is that until AirManager has an overlay that says Flight Simulator I'm using a 3rd party overlay that I imported that does not say Xplane. It does require and extra plugin though.

    Just so folks are aware, selecting the transparent option that was shown in this video only applies if you are using your desktop as your instrument panel. In this video it was black. That will not work for a custom image instrument panel. It’s an easy trap to fall into.

    • @IvanSkyFlight
      @IvanSkyFlight  Před 2 lety

      This is true. Another option is to fill as much of the blank space with other instruments which is what I did on the MFD panel. There is only a very tiny amount of desktop showing, probably less than 5 percent of the screen, if that. Yet another option is to use a program like Photoshop, Affinity, or the like and make a custom background with an portion cut out/set to alpha background. This requires you to be fairly precise in your layout and doesn't allow for quick changes. Having said that, all are good options. I use my version demonstrated in the video because it is very easy to change things around until I get them dialed in. Thanks for your thoughts!

    Hey man, very helpful video, thanks!
    I just got a Wimaxit panel and I'm having a HECK of a time getting one touch panel to work, let alone two.
    When first plugging it in it the touch inputs control my main display, rather than the display itself.
    I can (somewhat) get around this by setting the display as my primary or going through the touch calibration but it's very flakey and I have to do it after every reboot.
    I can't imagine it'd work with two displays, with the trouble I'm experiencing with one.

    Thanks a lot for the clear video. Regarding Air Manager, do you need the paid version or is it also possible with the free version? Apparently I am unable to achieve this with the free version. It works up to the point that you press the 'Show' button on Air Manager, then nothing happens... You don't get any notifications or anything like that...
    Or could the cause be the fact that I use 2 iPads as wireless monitors (via the iPad-app Spacedesk) with the PC and on the iPad (via the iPad-app Airmanager)?
    On the iPad-app Airmanager works fine for the free meters that are present on the iPad-app (and I don't need Spacedesk for that), but unfortunately not the supplied G1000 bezel.
    I would like to be sure before purchasing a paid version. Thanks for a reply.

    • @IvanSkyFlight
      @IvanSkyFlight  Před 9 měsíci +1

      It has been awhile since I had the free version, so I can't remember the demo limitations. I didn't really have the demo very long. I feel like there were a limited number of instruments. I don't think there was a time limit. Using the iPads with spacedesk should not be a problem. I am fairly certain that Air Manager just sees those as external monitors. In terms of the G1000 there is at least one free version, but I am pretty sure there are two. I know that's kind of a wishy washy response, but like I said, it's been awhile.

    • @IvanSkyFlight
      @IvanSkyFlight  Před rokem

      Yes, because those two monitors are connected to the same machine. I am not entirely sure how their licensing works, but I think you need a separate license if their main program (Air Manager Desktop) is used on a second machine. Within the program you have to log in to authorize the software. Some people use additional machines to run different panels on the same network. Haven't tried that yet. They also have Air Manager Player and that may have not have the same restrictions.

    Hi Ivan, I have watched a number of videos to date. I finally have a "reasonable" PC. Initially my thought was to run a triple monitor plus 2 panels but I have gotten away from that idead/build, mainly due to cost reasons (I would need a considerably higher GPU card, more monitors, etc.). A few questions for you:
    1. Are you still running the LG 43", does that still work for you? Thinking to upgrade? I am debating a 34" ultrawide monitor (my PC is dual purpose) but would really like a 43" monitor, latter is expensive so I am thinking to sacrifice some quality.
    2. Where did you get the touch panels for $135. I am not seeing anything less than $200 (new). Maybe they have shot up in price?
    3. Do you still like the thrustmaster rudder pedals? I am debating if I wait for the honeycomb ones or buy these (they do cost a lot)
    4. Still happy with the honeycomb?
    Do you see where this is going? I will be modeling my setup very similar to yours so, thank you!

    • @IvanSkyFlight
      @IvanSkyFlight  Před 2 lety +2

      1. Yes, still using the monitor. I may change this arrangement depending on the state of how MSFS handles multiple monitors. For now it works, but I do wish the picture was better. It's a bit washed out for my taste, but it was cheap and it works for now.
      2. Ebay. Search for 13.3 touch screens. They may be more expensive now, but I think they are still under 180 each.
      3. YES!!! The Thrustmasters are the favorite/most realistic part of my setup. I discuss that in another one of my videos where I discuss my rig czcams.com/video/2Xh6Jjdv7FE/video.html
      4. Yes I still like both of my Honeycomb units. I haven't tried any of the higher gear, but I feel like this is the most quality for the money, plus the more it's adopted by enthusiast the more the big software companies will support it.
      Good luck with your setup!

      The Flight Velocity panel is FV11. You are correct. I don't see any of the Uperfect panels like mine. They all seem to have a flat box shape on the back. Wimaxit is another brand, but can be more expensive. It does look like those Uperfects have the right mounts on the back, but there would be a gap. Not a dealbreaker, but different from what I have.

      If you are talking about a hardware bezel like RealSimGear or the like, it would be similar in that you have to get your pop out placed, but Air Manager has nothing to do with that really. In that case, I would take a look at Pop Out Panel Manager for MSFS. Let me know I am not understanding the question. czcams.com/video/47DAMViLRBk/video.html

    • @IvanSkyFlight
      @IvanSkyFlight  Před 2 lety +1

      I have been asked about the performance hit, and it there is one, I haven't noticed. I am not an FPS counter, but I do notice stuttering, and I can't say I have noticed any stuttering. For your second question, yes, you can drag to a non touch screen and use hardware which is what several companies do such as Real Sim Gear.

    Thank you so much, considering I was thinking of paying $2K for the RealSimGear. I do have one question though since I’m new to FlightSim. The whole point of doing this is to eliminate the instruments from cluttering the main monitor. What setting do you use to then eliminate the instruments from that screen? Thanks so much again. If our paths ever cross, I owe you lunch 😀😀

    • @IvanSkyFlight
      @IvanSkyFlight  Před 2 lety

      I just adjusted the view up until only the top inch or two of the instrument panel remains on the main screen. I then save that view and have it assigned to a yoke button so I can "look around" and then snap back to my main view. I don't think MSFS has a view without the panel like XP11 does.

    • @IvanSkyFlight
      @IvanSkyFlight  Před rokem

      I just have one and use it for both screens. You touch the item which highlights it and then the Knobster will control that item regardless of which screen you touch. When you setup a given panel there is a drop down menu labeled "Knobster" . For me the menu says "Knobster disabled" and "Knobster (A)" which leads me to believe that if I had a second Knobster it would come up as "Knobster (B)". So I believe you can have multiple if you wanted to.

    Very nice setup, i'm looking at this now as i've just added three large screens and discovered you cannot see the gauges any more when zoom is set in FS. • @IvanSkyFlight
      @IvanSkyFlight  Před rokem +1

      To the best of my understanding, AM is like a software version of a hardware bezel such as those sold by Real Sim Gear. These units and AM are limited by what the simulator can do. MSFS uses "simconnect" which are commands sent by third party software/hardware. There is a list of these commands listed. You may have to do a search for that. Having said all that, on my setup if I am using AM and click on the appropriate button/knob, the HDG will sync. I am not sure if by "keybindings" you mean keyboard shortcuts, but the simconnect list is different and bigger than that. Let me know if I am not understanding the question.

On my Hub, the control lights, which indicate a stable connection, dont lit for both monitors. I think the problem is, that Windows 11 does NOT support external touch screen monitors anymore, which still is implemented in Windows 10. And to complete this now: both monitors accept mouse clicks - the Garmin 1000 bezels work just fine. So i think i will stick to that. Thanks again and have a god time ... Ralf

      The Wimaxit 15.6 has one HDMI input, which is connected to my RTX 3090, and two USB-C connectors. One is connected to a powered USB 3.0 - Hub for the touch screen function. Windows doesnt recognize that. I even connected the second USB-connector to a separate power supply. I switched the USB-C connections, cause the manual says, both inputs are good for touchscreen function and power supply - stil the same.There is no reactions to touch to see, neither on the Wimaxits, nor on the main screen. How do you setup/calibrate your touchscreens, when Win 11 doesnt show that Touch Screen menue in the Control Panel anymore?

    On x-plane, when I choose an aircraft, the panels are automatically positioned on the second monitor (configured previously). On MSFS 2020 is this possible or will I have to configure popup windows on the second monitor every time I open the program?

      MSFS does not have this functionality. There is a utility called "FancyZones" that apparently comes close, but I have not personally used it.

      No not presently. There are some utilities that help a bit but currently none of them provide a solution as easy as what Xplane 11 has. Saying that the Xplane 11 solution is not perfect because they don’t save the size and position on a per aircraft basis which is needed. I hope both sims will update their functionality to provide automatic per aircraft popout placement.

      Depends on how you are going to use the iPad. There is some good flexibility here. There is a version of Air Manager that works on iPad. It's really cool, but you won't be able to pop out your G1000 screen like in this video. To do something like that, you will need an app like Duet which allows you to use your iPad as an additional monitor for your computer.

      @@baddogdax69 Again, it depends on if you are using your iPad as separate device or as an extended screen. If using as a separate device, you will install the Air Manager app to the iPad, but you won't be able to use the pop out screens from the flight sim on the iPad. I haven't looked at the iPad version in awhile, and I don't know if they have a G1000 option or not for the iPad Air Manager App. I suspect not.
      If you are using an app such as Duet which allows you to use the iPad as an extended screen/second monitor for your desktop, then you download and install the desktop version of Air Manager to your PC.

I have air manager setup to see IP address of the PC running the sim and it says it’s connected to FS2020. Only question now is how do I move the image to the touch monitors that are on a different pc. I thought this possible, am I wrong?

      @IvanSkyFlight  Před 2 lety +1

      That's a good question. To the best of my knowledge, you can't pop out the screens within MSFS and go to another computer that is not running special software. There is the possibility that you could run an app that does allow you to use your second computer as a monitor either wirelessly or with USB. There are options for that for iPads as well. In those cases though you are using the second computer's monitor as if it were connected to your PC.

      Think of the G1000 bezels as controllers. They look the same but you will need one to control the PFD and one to control the MFD. The default setting is PFD. So if you setup two bezels without changing that parameter they will both control the PFD and neither will control the MFD. So for the MFD to work you must set a bezel to MFD.
