  • Guide to using the #Schlenk Line in the Chemistry Lab
    How to operate #cannulation?
    I will demonstrate how to use a Schlenk line in the chemistry lab.
    Schlenk lines ensure the safe and convenient usage of air- and moisture-sensitive compounds.

    Nice vid but after the dry solvent has been added surely you should've turned the N2 tap back on for the RXN mix as your vent needle is allowing air in?

    said. Somehow I managed a weak smile. The next four days were spent exploring the city.
    Addis Ababa is a sprawling, fairly beautiful city of two million people. At 2400 metres above sea level it is one of the largest inland city of Africa. The word addis ababa (italic) is Amharic, which in English means "New Flower." It was founded by Emperor Menelik II in 1887 and declared the capital of Ethiopia in 1896.

    GREAT video.....one question: 15:32 you say always make sure the oil level is below the rxn. mixture.........I would disagree with this, as I was taught this could lead to hot spots...I always allow it to come to exactly the same level.

    • @chemfunman
      @chemfunman  Před 3 lety

      that is why we need a stirring bar to mix the heat more homogenously. Without stirring, the level of oil bath does not predispose the RBF to possess hotspots. better?

    Why did you leave the N2 flowing towards the condenser and the flask after removing the exit needle? Won't that cause overpressure and blow off the septum?

    • @chemfunman
      @chemfunman  Před 3 lety

      Didn’t happen to us! We just hope to keep the interior full of nitrogen to preserve the dry environment

    • @user-mp4bc9qp2x
      @user-mp4bc9qp2x Před 2 lety

      this is good practice. the excess nitrogen just leaves through the oil bubbler. its good to leave on in case any holes are in the apparatus.

    Why do you do not use a over pressure valve ? Do you do not need it, because do you work just under normal pressure 1013,25 mbar ?

      Possible to use a valve, just that here we did not have the equipment yet.

      @@chemfunman interesting, I try to understand the function of the over pressure valve after STUTZ.
      Is not that easy to finde this kind of information, how to install and how to use this kind of over pressure valve.
      Maybe you have once time and could make a video how to install a valve after STUTZ at a schlenkline

    Why do you only make sure you suck the posible oxigen from one black tube but not the one may be contained in the little flask or the one in the other black tube as well as the reflux column?

  • @xiongyuwu2596

    Good instruction but I don't understand the purpose of this. Looks like a compicated way to pour in your solvent, you can just flow N2 and use a sep funnel or am I wrong?

      @@chemfunman at say 9:20 you can just pour the anhydrous solvent into a sep funnel and drip it from the top of the condesner under N2 flow or in a nitrogen box. I don't understand what problem is the Schlenk line solving (I'm not a chemist)
