    Dear Professor Davis thanks a bunch for the insightfully meticulous video. I have a question: in some situations the water condenser inlet and outlet of water are exactly the way you have displayed in your video. However, in some situations the entrance and exit connections are mentioned to be exactly the opposite. Which process is correct in which situation? Please guide me. Thanks.

    when inserting the thermometer into the thermometer adapter, you should hold the thermometer very close to the adapter when pushing it in. if you hold the thermometer far away from the adapter, there's a chance that you might break it. other than that, great video.

    i place a thermometer at the vapor front to the condenser elbow but the reading im getting is 85c for ethanol. do i raise the thermometer tip higher then the elbow ?

    What about using a Vigreux column to avoid reflux (especially when using a 250ml or larger volume Florence flask)?

    What do you use for water in the condenser if you don't have a sink handy? I do my experiments outside bc I do not own a fume hood. Should I just get some water that is close to freezing, but not frozen and fill the condenser with it, Switching it out as the experiments goes?

      get a small fountain or aquarium pump like this one. It is the one I use. It is super cheap and has a very low flow rate, but it (barely) gets the job done.

      be sure whatever you purchase has an appropriate nozzle size (uaually 0.33 inch will work with most 19/22 glassware), and that the pump is powerful enough to reach the necessary height (about 3 feet if your water reservoir will be on the bench alongside your apparatus, but more if you will be pumping from the ground to a table, fore example.
      Now, fill a cooler with ice water and plumb the aquarium pump to your condenser, and the return line back to the cooler. The cooling supply should last for hours when performing small scale distillation.

    For showing the general set up of distillation the video is really good. But one should not follow this technique as it is. The safety part is completely ignored. The video should start with (1) proper inspection of glasswares (2) attaching the water line to the condenser before attaching it to the line (3) attaching proper clips for the water line to the condenser. Also one should have cut resistant glove during the job.

    The ethyl alcohol will boil first (70 to 75 deg C) and water will boil next (100 deg C).

    Could you use a flat bottom flask directly on a hot plate stirrer instead of the round bottom in the mantle?

      If I understand correctly, you are suggesting using an Erlenmeyer flask as the boiling flask. If so, the short answer is yes, it could be done. The long answer is that it must have a proper joint for making gas-tight connections (which most Erlenmeyer's do not), and even if it did, heating and mixing in an Erlenmeyer wouldn't be as even as they are in a round-bottomed flask, which would increase the risk of bumping (flash-boiling) causing liquid to froth up into the still head. Both of these limitations probably explain why most would go for the round-bottom boiling flask.

      Distillation of alcohol is illegal in most countries. This is because it is an explosion risk and can be exceptionally dangerous. If you live in an area where it is legal, the boiling point of ethanol is 78 degrees. If you aren't using it for drinking purposes, any methanol left over should be fine (poisonous if drunk). Be sure to use a flameless heating source and ensure no pressure builds in your setup.

    You should add a Fractional column between the three way adapter and the RB flask. This is a simple distillation, I understand, but ethanol need a Fractional column.

    great , thankby the way i have crude oil refinery by simple distillation.i have a problem that is ....if i refine 100 barrels of crude oil , i get back product of gasoline (10 barrels ) , diesel (40 barrels) , waxy diesl ( 30 barrels) and residual (10 barrels ).i want to reduce pour point of waxy diesel ( gelling at 30•C).can you give me some advice ,thank....

      This ensures that the water jacket fills completely from bottom to top. Plumbing it in the opposite direction can lead to a trickle of water running through the lower portion of the jacket but not the upper portion, causing less efficient condensation. Essentially plumbing it this way ensures that as much vapor as possible condenses and this collected rather than escaping system.

    Why did you grease the RBF lip before you added your sample? aren't you risking getting grease into the sample?

      A fair point in general. There are those who disagree completely with the use of grease unless you are using the glass in a vacuum application. They're usually concerned about contamination of their sample. We apply a small bit in our teaching Labs because we found that it helps to discourage joints from separating and leaking vapor during a distillation or reflux. The trade off of course is the possibility of contaminating your sample if you plan to use it for a subsequent experiment or to characterize it spectroscopically. At this point in my course we don't have any intention of reusing the solvent. Also, we aren't ready for spectroscopy at at that point anyway, so we opted to use the grease because it tends to help give a more consistent temperature profile in the experiment we conduct.

    Question :how does the cold water coming in affect the constitution of the distillate ? Isn't some of that cold water staying behind ? If so how significant is it . Thanks in advance

      The answer is that the cooling water does not mix with the distillate at all. The cold water is running through a cooling jacket in the outer of two concentric tubes in the condenser. The distillate itself is condensing in the inner of the two concentric tubes. The cooling water is only there to keep the temperature of the glass low enough to promote condensation. It simply flows through the outer jacket and into the lab sink, never coming into contact with the sample.
