My respect for Crispin Freeman just shot through the roof. He coulda let those other people ask him questions/comment a while back, though. He'd already made his point....
*applaudes* I agree with what he is saying. And I absolutely love that he brings up the reason why mangas are so popular with girls compared to American comics. I read an interview where he went more in depth in this subject and he gives brilliant answers.
this sounds unusual but i like how i feel like im one of alucards kids sitting down and listening to him as he's explaining this and it just feels wonderful and loving.
This is so true. I've grown up on anime, and my mom always complained that it was kid stuff and I shouldn't watch it anymore. I made her watch some of my dvds and she said that if she had realized what was going on when I was younger she wouldn't have let me watch some of it.
I agree with Crispin Freeman completely, this "moral obligation to protect the children" mentality is ridicules; TV's shows, video game, music, etc all get a ridicules amount of political flack for odd things. I can understand why they do it, but it needs to fixed because as Crispin said "..they have the internet" and its true, the ideology that children are isolated from this often dark and twisted world is completely wrong. They need to learn how to deal with it!
wow, i've never actually thought about this before while watching anime and children's cartoons...but he is absolutely right! wow...amazing voice and he got so passionate about it! it's true. wow! crispin freeman i love you!!!!!!!
I wish I could favorite this comment TWICE. I couldn't agree more. Maybe not so much Ren and Stimpy, but we need more series with the quality of Gargoyles or Batman TAS back on the air.
yes! me too! i totally agree with that! people look at me like im crazy cuz im saving my money 5 months in advance for a con that im going to, instead of going to the mall, & i hardley ever talk on the phone, & my dune buggie? good Lord, i re-cultivated our lawn doing at least a dozen 360's & 180's & figure 8's each, EVERYDAY!...i miss that thing. & our lawn could use it too, lol! ~Arizona Smith Jr. (& the Jr. thing? from my dad cuz we both luv indianna jones. i was RAISED on that stuff!)
i love how he says this kind of stuff should just be for little kids. its so annoying when people look down on you for watching anime because they think its a load of dumb cartoons when in actuality, a lot of anime is smarter, deeper, and funnier than the meaningless shows with real people that are on TV.
Tell it like it is Crispin! This is why the animated shows of the 80's and 90's hold up way better than 99% of the crap you see on TV these days. Damn the FCC, and companies like 4Kids and those paranoid parent groups who seem to think they know better than everybody else.
@Lyiad I feel precisely the same way about videogames, and the fact that people don't take them very seriously because they're called "videoGAMES". They hold just as much merit as books or films, and while some of them are simply just games (Unreal Tournament, COD, etc) quite a lot of them have a great deal of depth in their stories & game worlds. Among other things too, such as Mr. Freeman's ideas on violence and maturity and such.
He's got some good points. Why censor such an impressive tool to teach children about the world around them instead of using it to help them understand consequences, violence, and other bad aspects of the world. Adults (myself included) really need to stop treating kids like idiots.
He says that comic book characters don't appeal to women because of breast exagerrations and such, however that appears in manga much more. He also uses one cartoon to denounce maturity in american cartoons. Also imo his view of what makes mature storytelling is kind of imature.
You people are just complaining because you like Teen Titans. Whether or not you like the show, he was merely using it as an example of what is going on with American cartoons. Its a generalization, deal with it.
I don't think he was saying it was a bad show--just a bit unrealistic. I think he was also just trying to illustrate how that 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' group was pretty full of it.
Not saying that you don't need to be creative or have imagination. I agree whole-heartedly that you do. Also agree that it is good to be unique, but you also need to be able to FUNCTION in normal society, not fit in. The point was that people need to be more open to the idea of cartoons that are aimed at an older audience. Cartoons that aren't just for children, that can appeal to teenagers and adults.
@sonpanchan You don't know the half of it. Hell, when I saw the Batman TAS episode, "Two-Face, Part 1" and saw Harvey's new face at the end of the episode, I freaked out.
I agree with everything he said. I believe they even took his advice. Look at Young Justice, Ben 10, even the new Thundercats. They still have childish moments, but they're kinda maturing now. Kissing, dates, couples, like normal Teens. Fights, death, still no blood. Yugioh 5Ds was pretty mature(Not 4kids version.) Then they toned it down with the new series. I'm actually seeing hope for American cartoons again. Now if only Pokemon would mature.
He mentions "stereotypical" comics as an example of how comics don't usually appeal to girls, which is clearly an issue (the Comicon panel). Much more manga/anime apparently has what girls cannot find in the run o' the mill comic books. This is a generalization, I know, but seems to ring true.
Speaking of storytelling...(okay, bear with me.)...who here has heard of the Paper Mario series?......For those of you who haven't, let me explain, it's ilke today's Final Fantasy, but with Mario in it. And he journey's across the world to find 7 star spirits. This was the first Mario game (for me) that actually told a story, instead of just the average jump-on-goombas-and-kill-bowser plot. Plus, it starts off with the famous showdown with Bowser...AND MARIO LOSES!!! That's a first. Really.
You completely missed the point if you're just obsessing over his comment or two about bleach and/or teen titans. The point was that people are narrow minded enough to believe that all cartoons should be child friendly and get all up in arms over every minor detail that doesn't fit in to their idea of the what their child should be watching. As opposed to trying to teach their child how to function in normal society and that there are consequences for certain actions, they prefer to shelter them
i cant wait to see him at the nexst con XD see that was the show, in the comics star fire and robin were screwing each other by like issue 4 or 5, and 90% of the time when a titan dies they stay dead xD but jericho still rocks yea i'm so gunna show him some of thouse
Um, he didn't say that. He said comic BOOKS don't appeal to women because of a lack of well-developed characters who have romantic relationships. He didn't mention the exaggerated breasts unless you think that's what "well-developed" was refering to, when it was not. Also, he only listed one cartoon as an EXAMPLE. He wasn't basing his opinions on only that one show.
I agree with what Crispin says towards the whole violence thing and here's my philosophy (or whatever you want to call it): Kids are going to find out about violence, death, etc at some point ANYWAY. Might as well let them learn early so parents can get the fuck over it.
He wasn't complaining about Teen Titans and he didn't say anything about sex. You completely misunderstood everything he was trying to say. He was saying that we need to teach kids about the world so they don't get in trouble when their older. You can have an animation teach lessons without it being realistic. Why can't a show about superheros teach lessons? Also, if you start freaking out every time someone doesn't like the same things you do, your not going to make many friends.
No listen to him when he first mentions storytelling for girls then says how many superheros and girls with big tits and then changes his discussion. He is saying comics don't appeal to girls because of this. Crispin Freeman has a skewed sense of maturity. It does not always have to be relationships and violence.
They do actually show relationships kissing even censored sex in comics the only problem is that one america doesn't like to mainstream that and two relationships in comic books hardly ever last.
A lot of those are good shows, but a lot of them are for more mature audiences. I'm talking about the crap juvenile cartoons of American media today. Gargoyles was perfect because it not only appealed to much older audiences for its plot, characters, a mythological basis, but it was also mindful of its younger audiences without pandering to them too much.
"Good Luck, they have the internet!"
Statement of the century. Seriously.
My respect for Crispin Freeman just shot through the roof.
He coulda let those other people ask him questions/comment a while back, though. He'd already made his point....
Dude! He knows the creator of Gargoyles. I love that show. ^^
Crispin has a good point about all this.
Crispin Freeman tells it like it is, he's awesome....Go Freeman!!!
AMEN! crispin freeman needs to talk to more ppl about this cause that made the most sence out of anything ever
Holy crap, I'd start a stand ovation after this answer.
I read the article...and everything he's saying is in there. This guy knows his stuff.
Dear god, I really wish that he can come to Reno. XD He'd be a great speaker for our school! Crispin, you rock!
Thank you Crispin Freeman for being so awesome. you always make sense and your a voice actiing god
im in love with this guy's voice
*applaudes* I agree with what he is saying.
And I absolutely love that he brings up the reason why mangas are so popular with girls compared to American comics. I read an interview where he went more in depth in this subject and he gives brilliant answers.
Applauds* Wow, I agree whole-heartedly with all of those sentiments. He really hit the nail on the head.
this sounds unusual but i like how i feel like im one of alucards kids sitting down and listening to him as he's explaining this and it just feels wonderful and loving.
and this is one of the many reasons crispin freeman is awsome
He nailed it!
This is so true. I've grown up on anime, and my mom always complained that it was kid stuff and I shouldn't watch it anymore. I made her watch some of my dvds and she said that if she had realized what was going on when I was younger she wouldn't have let me watch some of it.

This guy is awesome he has very good points on this subject and for good reason and as 1otakuXD said Mr.Freeman is a genius
Crispin Freeman seems really quite intelligent. I'd love to meet him in person.
I wish I could favorite this comment TWICE. I couldn't agree more. Maybe not so much Ren and Stimpy, but we need more series with the quality of Gargoyles or Batman TAS back on the air.
Big giant kudos to this man. ^-^
.....crispin is officially my hero.....
This man is my hero
I completely whole-heartedly agree with what he says about this. Its truly ridiculous how anime is categorized.
W00t! You go Crispin Freeman! Everything he has said is totally true.
ALL HAIL CRISPIN"S AWESOMENESS!
I truly agree with what he said!
Everything he said here is so true!
Gargoyles is sooo badass! :D Crispin is my hero~!
HELL Yeah! I like his opinion about that!
Don't worry, 4 Chan will always be there to put the adult stuff back into children's cartoons!
yes! me too! i totally agree with that! people look at me like im crazy cuz im saving my money 5 months in advance for a con that im going to, instead of going to the mall, & i hardley ever talk on the phone, & my dune buggie? good Lord, i re-cultivated our lawn doing at least a dozen 360's & 180's & figure 8's each, EVERYDAY!...i miss that thing. & our lawn could use it too, lol!

I have rediscovered my idol. :)
All hail Crispin Freeman!
static shock is a superhero cartoon that teaches lessons in several episodes.
I think I just fell in love.
I love Teen Titans and I understand why Chrispen doesn't like it, but they did push the envelope a lot. What he did say about it did make sense.
Lovely rant.
Tell it like it is Crispin!
This is why the animated shows of the 80's and 90's hold up way better than 99% of the crap you see on TV these days.
Damn the FCC, and companies like 4Kids and those paranoid parent groups who seem to think they know better than everybody else.
Crispin rocks.
I agree!
Crispin Freeman 4 President!

yeah, if you look at the date of this vid it was in 2006...Crispin Freeman couldn't have know of something that came out a year later
Batman: The Animated Series motherfuckers! That cartoon was beautiful and it was pure nightmare fuel for every child that watched it. Fuck yeah DCAU!
damn this guy did every american voice for almost every anime
crispin your genius
@warcactuar I'm sure he already knows about it. He voiced both Speedy and Guardian in the pilot episode. :)
Don't you love it when people forget that other people have opinions of their own?
He's got some good points. Why censor such an impressive tool to teach children about the world around them instead of using it to help them understand consequences, violence, and other bad aspects of the world. Adults (myself included) really need to stop treating kids like idiots.
I agree
He's right.
Crispin is funny in every way LOL
I'v seen gargoyels(sp) and have never seen that one it makes me wonder what else thay didn't show.
Well; I think Batman the Animated Series struck a good balance between mature story-telling and kid-friendliness.
I think batman the animated series and justice league basically anything Bruce Timm does stand out
They changed Deathstroke's name to using his real name Slade for fear of using the word the word "Death" on television.
I don't think he was saying it was a bad show--just a bit unrealistic. I think he was also just trying to illustrate how that 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' group was pretty full of it.
@Cerebite Only one I watch currently is Iron Man Armored Adventures and Wakfu, but they're both French so I dunno if they count

togusa fuck yeah
@sonpanchan You don't know the half of it. Hell, when I saw the Batman TAS episode, "Two-Face, Part 1" and saw Harvey's new face at the end of the episode, I freaked out.
People complaining about opinions. Oh my god I'm so suprised.
I feel silly for saying this but I like fairly odd parents, but I agree with you
I agree with everything he said.

He wins as Albedo.

I have to agree with Crispin, I live in America and there is too much censorship.
@angelalovesharry I know, tell me about it.
@Sasukelover01 he is EPIC!
omg! I'm glad there is someone else out there who gets it...what the hell is wrong with people?
??? How did I get that response from you?
Tsume😍

I was looking for gordon freeman and found his exact opposite :-P
i cant wait to see him at the nexst con XD
see that was the show, in the comics star fire and robin were screwing each other by like issue 4 or 5, and 90% of the time when a titan dies they stay dead xD but jericho still rocks
yea i'm so gunna show him some of thouse
Another good example of an animated show with good storytelling is "Avatar: The Last Airbender".
I know, I told YOU that.
Get out of my bedroom Crispin Freeman!
isnt he the voice of sasuke?
I agree with what Crispin says towards the whole violence thing and here's my philosophy (or whatever you want to call it): Kids are going to find out about violence, death, etc at some point ANYWAY. Might as well let them learn early so parents can get the fuck over it.

Tha's Yuri Lowenthal :)
Gargoyles was the best animated series.
i wonder what he would say to Al kahn...
No listen to him when he first mentions storytelling for girls then says how many superheros and girls with big tits and then changes his discussion. He is saying comics don't appeal to girls because of this.

@TheCouragousGirl WHEN ALUCARD SPEAKS. FREEAAKKKKING LISTEN!!! sorry, got wraped up in the guy's awsomeness as well as inteligence
but-but, i loved teen titans D:
Eh, Teen Titans kinda matured as we did, the later episodes and seasons are not as Crispin described them then.
SOOO true i LOVE teen titans and NOTHING happens! but they DO get jealous and they DO kiss in the movie but other than that pretty much NOTHING!
ha ha you tell 'em, Zelgadis.
A lot of those are good shows, but a lot of them are for more mature audiences. I'm talking about the crap juvenile cartoons of American media today. you think that huh?
