- This is guide on how to catch all four clifftop fish in Animal Crossing New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch. The four fish are the cherry salmon (1,000 bells), char (3,800 bells), golden trout (15,000 bells), and stringfish (15,000 bells). Remember to donate the first ones you catch to the museum first!

I Just caught the trout. No bait or anything. Man this is insane!! Wish i had the same luck with tarantulas, though. ^^;

had 80 fishbaits to hunt a char. Caught the stringfish first bait and in less than 15 baits i caught 2 golden trouts. Game is trolling me with luck

I catch Char all the time but I can't get the trout or the stringfish 100+ bait at this point
a few tips on the golden trout and stringfish (long but helpful)
when catching these rare fish you will want to craft/buy 2 or 3 fishing rods, along with keeping a net, a shovel, and a slingshot on you for rare circumstances. dont forget your ladder and vaulting pole!
please note that it is normal to not catch these fish.
try fishing in april for the golden trout and in january for the stringfish
i recommend only taking ~100 fish bait each trip for having enough to get decent amounts of tries, but not enough to put you in a sticky situation if you need some space in your inventory.
i usually go from top to bottom and from left to right in inventory slots.
my inventory usually has 3 fishing rods down in the first row with a net at the bottom, then the vaulting pole, ladder, slingshot and shovel down the second from left row. the third and fourth rows down from the left are going to be almost all of your fish bait. the last 20 fish bait (sounds weird but hear me out) will go in the last 2 bottom slots in your inventory.
use the bottom right 20 fish bait first.
sprinkle the bait and check the shadow size. the golden trout is just smaller than a black bass for reference and common catches are cherry salmon and dace. anything larger or smaller should be scared off for maximum tool use, but if something is unusually large, catch it without a second thought. the worst it can be is a glitched black bass.
for the stringfish you will want to sprinkle bait and scare away anything smaller than a black bass shadow, but not black bass. the worst thing you can do is scare away a stringfish thinking it was a black bass so for safety reasons catch them. the stringfish has the same size shadow as the sea bass and i believe the dorado also for a river comparison.
one last thing, i have noticed that spawn rates for stringfish and golden trout can be higher for one and lower for the other as in multiple islands i have fished on have had different results under the same conditions (100 fish bait, same time frame, same month, hemisphere, etc). i had a lot of trouble catching the golden trout (i used 57 bait before i found one) but used only around 33 fish bait PER stringfish on the same island. i also went to someone else’s island and caught 2 stringfish randomly, then didnt catch any for the rest of the day. so if you have any problems, try a different island.

Edit: I managed to secure myself one now. I had to do some landscaping on my world. Being I had some open space and a waterfall, I turned that into a clifftop river. I had to demolish my sitting area to extend the river so it has 2 waterfalls on both sides.

I got the char in a couple tries. Still struggling with the trout and stringfish though. I've used at least 100 baits so far.
It took me 5 minutes to catch a string fish then a gold trout I was super lucky that day

I stopped using bait. I’d spend hours crafting stacks of them and never get the fish I wanted. I spend 10 minutes doing laps of my island or just checking the rivers occasionally and that’s how I get them. I only use bait for pier fish cause it’s rare that fish naturally spawn there

Does anyone know if you can catch river fish in a clifftop river? I thought I had made a clifftop river but I keep getting river fish so I'm a little confused
You can still catch regular river fish in a clifftop river, but you need to be at a clifftop river to catch golden trout, stringfish, etc. It makes the rare fish rarer.
I Had the stringfish easily on the island of my best friend who is in southern hemisphere 😂😂👍

Yup.I got like 6 dorados during rain
I got a stringfish, golden trout and blue marlin in the rain
For me dorados are not rare they common for me, when I see extra large shadows during 5pm 12k bells
