I think it was intentional that Eir left Garm to go to the Honor of the Waves alone, if she was making one last dramatic stand and not planning on coming back she might not want Garm to face the same fate she had planned for herself. (or maybe his AI broke the dungeon even more)

Oh my gosh I've played norn so many times, and I cannot believe I've missed that moment with Garm! That was so great! I love the small insight into his relationship with Eir, as he's always just "there". Knowing he's more sentient and aware makes his presence mean more.

I must admit. I looked ahead at the small story conclusion. And the foreshadowing was amazing. What a great way to die. Regardless of the naysayers. He took revenge for his kin.
    Willingly to his own death.

You can talk to Garm?!? WP, I've been playing since launch, and you still blow my mind with so many little things about the game.

I think what the writers are trying to portray with the Sons of Svanir being angry at you for killing the Icebrood who was killing their own is that they value strength above all. The idea is that the Sons who die didn't deserve to live anyway; they view everyone in the world as either a predator or prey, and the only difference is whether or not you are stronger than your neighbors. Since they mention they are using Jormag for the power he offers rather than as true reverence, I wonder if they view losing control to Jormag's corruption as a type of weakness as well... Considering a cornerstone of Norn culture is worshiping the idea of becoming a legend, and considering that when it comes to earning respect they believe the ends justify the means, I don't think it's so hard to see how they could stumble down the road of false dichotomy, and also why the promise of Jormag's power is such a temptation. The Sons of Svanir represent Norn values stripped bare of context-- self reliance, not showing weakness in the face of adversity, and forging your legacy by any means.
I don't think it's by accident that this story step is nestled in the Jotun storyline. The writers are trying to show us that the Sons of Svanir are leading the Norn down a very similar path to the Jotun, who were once intelligent and cultured astronomers and storytellers but are now bloodthirsty kin-slayers who barely hold a fragment of the influence over the world that their ancestors once held. The same can be said of the other player races and their respective ancient-races, but considering the Jotun are the only ones still around, this one of the only times we get to see such a direct comparison it in the vanilla story until Arah.

Norns are so under appreciated, I have a herald norn and in a month of games and such I did not see more than 5 norms. And I’ve been partaking a lot in world bosses

Aww, you missed my favourite bit about the ice cave with the Sons of Svanir! They actually don't willingly talk to anyone! If you approach Eilif with a female norn he just says:
"Begone, woman. The Sons have nothing to say to you or your fellow skirt-wearing wenches."
You don't get any of that additional dialogue at all. Much as it's kinda frustrating not to get the additional conversation, I always loved the fact they kept the in-universe intolerance that accurate, and made the distinction that they really *wouldn't* talk to female norn the way they would to males.

  • @Oblivius33
    @Oblivius33 Před 5 lety +2

I do enjoy the concept of the Sons of Svanir, and extreme take on the duality of the Norn and their belief.
I can't say however it's well portraied, you can play around a lot with it but the game really pushes that cartoony villain aspect, most if not all of the Racial Villains get that treatment, with some moments of clarity in between, even the Inquest and the Nightmare Court get moments like those too.
That so far has never happened for the Sons of Svanir, quiet the opposit with a Crack in the Ice, where they are made to be the dumbest group around the icy block.

Lol WP I think you view the Jotun way too highly man, they got so low that their elders are either going crazy or fleeing their own people. They might have been amazing before but they are just crazy giant people now.

Didn't realize Garm wasnt in HotW. But it was Eir"s suicide mission. So it makes since she wouldnt take him. She didn't expect to come back.

What an episode! Fiona really exemplifies the spirit of the Norn and seems to be a kindred spirit to the player character, the sons of svanir area is neat to see, a demo of the new spirit skills, and HOLY CRAP YOU CAN TALK TO GARM!?!?!!?!?!? I had no idea and loved getting to see that. Such a neat way to better understand Eir through her closest companion. All of this really highlights the better aspects of the Norn, great stuff WP and this series just keeps getting better and better.

I've always felt like the Sons of Svanir are a parody of the hardcore gamer mindset. So many people are willing to mimic whatever, throw away hours of work and story just to have the most DPS- you can bet that if there was an option to become a Svanir that gave you a Power boost there would be hundreds of Svanir PCs running around. It's such a rampant mindset that I loved finding this little "there is such thing as too much power" at the beginning of my journey through Guild Wars.

Rumor is, unfortunately wiki is no help, but the "Eye of the North" is a relic of the Jotun built back when they were a great race. Visiting there at this point in the story could be educational, and your Ranger can get some unique pets.
The Jotun have become ugly brutes through their own decline of the race, but I wonder if Jormag has an effect on the minds of the people it fights or influences. The Sons of Svanir obviously have a decline in mental faculties after they embrace the dragon. I wonder if races like the Skritt developed their group mind abilities as a defense mechanism against Jormag's mind attacks. Maybe the pseudo spiritualism of the Norn and the Kodan is another defense mechanism. The rest of the races that have faced Jormag (Grawl, Quaggan, Dredge) seem very primitive in comparison.

Fuck me, I'm so behind now!! This week has just been atrociously busy D: I probably won't get past this epi today, but hey, I'm trying!
    - oooh, I really like that Blood-debt thing. You could make such awesome stories with those (such as the one you read in the beginning).
    - I always thought that this area had more importance mechanically or at least in the main story than it ended up doing. I also just realized, since I've been looking for cool places to gather ppl together for stuff like the Love4ArenaNet event, that would be an awesome hub to gather :>
    - Kinda interesting that at least in character the Norn would feel themselves closer to the Sylvari than they would the humans. It's kinda easy to forget that they're actually not just tall burly humans at times. I wish the game reminded us of that more often.
    - oh look at that F O R E S H A D O W I N G
    - dude I wish I had ANY idea of what I chose for my Norn, but I barely ever play her :(
    - shovel face lol
    - Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!! I never knew this! G A R M! That is so glorious, that we get to talk to him QwQ I never knew!
    - I love that Garm calls Eir his Alpha. All this is just so awesome!
    - It could've been an oversight but at the same time it could also be that in the state of mind that Eir was in, she did not expect to make it and if so, she may have wanted to spare Garm the same fate. Though I do think that Garm would've felt horribly betrayed if that were the case.
    - Baby Wolf XD Wish I could summon a baby wolf whenever.
    - Ah, look at that cutscene, are you not entertained? This looks hilariously awesome!
    - GO BABY WOLF, GO!
    - Awww nuu, I wish we could speak to Garm more :c Like imagine you could always speak to him if you transform into wolf!
    Great epi, as always!

You may hate how the devs made Norn/Sons of Svanir “cartoony” villains, but at least they remained consistent with it. (WARNING - the rest contains spoilers for those that want to be surprised by story later on) In HoT at the end of the personal story in Auric Basin when you’re tracking down Taimi via her holo messages, you run into a Norn (former Son of Svanir?) who he and his friend were “admirers” of a vinetooth, which maimed this particular Norn and killed his friend. Yet this Norn reveres this vinetooth as a “glorious creature” in the same kind of way that Sons of Svanir revere Jormag and his minions. Cartoony, but at least consistent.

My theory is that WP wants a character that can go into HoT without masteries, since those can't be unlocked per character.
