    fun fact: solar farms in the desert not only generate power, but also vegetations! 🤗
    this is because 1. the solar pannels reduce the direct sunlight on the vegetations underneath and thus less loss of water
    and 2. solar pannels must be occasionally washed with water to remove the dusts on top,
    which also serves as irragations for the underlying vegetations

    China is the largest producer and consumer of coal in the world and is the largest user of coal-generated electricity, with over a thousand coal-fired power stations. The share of coal in the energy mix during the 2010s, is 80% in 2010. China emits over 41% of global greenhouse gas. China's large demand was in part responsible for the delay in peak global coal production, coal production reached a record high in December 2021 and coal consumption in China is forecast to reach a record high again in 2023.
    In addition to environmental and health costs at home, China's dependence on coal is cause for concern on a global scale. Due in large part to the emissions caused by burning coal, China is now the number one producer of carbon dioxide, responsible for a full third of the world's CO2 output. Deal with the issue at source.

      China has already surpassed 50% renewables in the energy mix and most of Chinese CO2 pollution is in reality US and European pollution as they moved the production of their consumption to China. So even though China is far below the west in CO2 per capita even these statistics are vastly undermining the western polluting consumption as large parts of it is officially counted as Chinese emissions.

    • @beyondfossil
      @beyondfossil Před rokem

      It makes sense that China has high emissions right now because: (1) the world rapidly moved most of its manufacturing to China starting in the mid 90's and accelerated through the 2000s (2) China is neck-in-neck the largest population in the world along with India at ~1.4B people which dwarfs the US population of ~334M.
      Yet _per capita_ emissions in China are lower than US. The US "energy hog" lifestyle is well studied with wasteful single family homes in the suburbs and large over-sized vehicles traveling larger distances daily.
      China will reach peak emissions by 2030 and well on its way there and likely will be early in that goal. Solar power capacity in China is growing at a massive stunning 75% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). At this rate, solar capacity alone will blow exceed coal in about 6 years. This doesn't even include China's massive amounts of wind power either. Both together will well exceed coal power production by 2030.
      Coal factory owners are well aware of this. Sure, they could build new coal power plants now but only to see them be canceled or run at a fraction of their capacity later in an economic problem known as "stranded assets".
