What a life! That's my dream. Retirement is looking like a near term plan. Thanks for sharing the nomadic life
Thanks for checking out our videos!
Love the falling snow out the window. Can't imagine how awesome that would be to just sit inside and take it all in with some hot chocolate. Enjoy and be safe!
One of my favorite times. Love winter. Thanks for commenting Glen!
Well, airstream should pay you for making such a good publicity on their product, and being a user of the product that is a big plus. How is you mileage with the Toyota forerunner and the trailer in tow? Security issues are all good as well? Cheers.
When I'm towing, I usually get between 11-14 mpg with the 4Runner and Basecamp. Thanks for watching! And no, I'm not paid by Airstream.
Another well thought out and shot video.... very clear for anyone who is considering the differences.
the mountain views are super. 🤗
Thank you very much Dwight! Yes I didn’t want to leave that area, it was gorgeous this time of year!
What a great set up you have, Cass! Love your videos! Good luck with your channel!
Thank you so much Mickey!
Terrific video! Very clear and concise, with great shots of animals and nature! A perfect combination!!!
Many thanks!
awesome video, lots of info.... i love your pets, specially how Napoleon just came and sat on you... soooooooo cute!!!!
thanks for sharing, i love your home and set up!!!!
Thank you very much! Yes, Napoleon is a cuddle monster so anyone sitting on the ground typically ends up with a cat in their lap.
Love your channel and basecamp videos. The basecamp is the front runner for my future nomadic life. Keep up the good work.
Thank you will do! Really glad the videos are helpful.

Your Base Camp is super nice and Jasper is just awesome! Great info and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching Shane!
Hi Cass, Great video and information.. AND, that mountain view out the front window starting at the midpoint of the 7 minute mark. Wow! Thanks for taking the time make videos and share your experiences. Have a great Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving Thomas!!
Love, love, love your precious babies they are both so precious! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Geraldine!
I love the setup of the Basecamp. Feels like an apartment rather than trailer. Seems very spacious for 16ft too.
It really does feel a lot bigger than it is!
Totally going to get a base camp after watching your videos. Thx for the tips and explanations.
Glad you are enjoying the videos!
Thanks for the update.
Thanks for watching!
Love your channel. I live in Austin but work in Arizona and Nevada and decided instead of getting an apartment there I am getting a basecamp for me and my dog. Thanks for all the tips!
That is awesome! Hope you enjoy it!!
Nice review of the RV! I'm from SOCO but moved to Hawaii and plan on going back and picking up a RV and this review really helps. Wish you more safe travels and adventures.
Glad it was helpful! Safe travels!
Thinking of getting one of these; just bought the truck. Such a big decision so thanks for the great review!

Great review on the pros and cons of the X. Well done!

Thanks for the detailed info. Great video!

Awesome! It is the cutest rig out there!! I miss Salida, enjoy the beautiful fall colors!
Thanks so much Zena!! I was right next to your camping spot from the summer and was thinking about the fun we had. Hope you are having a good fall!
I like your videos they're very cool you need to do more of them. Hope you Jasper and Napoleon are all well and safe👍👍👍
Thank you very much Billy, I'll continue to work on more. Thanks for checking them out!
Your videos have improved tremendously! 👍

Oh man, I love the Jasper bloopers at the end. Great info as always. Thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed them! I’ll try to add more in the future!

@@TailsofWanderlust I know you were recently headed out East.. just this week I took a quick 3 day trip to Michigan, where I met a horse and interviewed the owner for an upcoming video. Also did some rest area reviews for people traveling with pets. All coming up in the future. I just keep getting the bug to hit the road this year. And yes.. stayed in the back of the Honda HRV.
Thank you! Great notes.

Hi Cass! Really great video. Thank you for sharing this information about your Base Camp. Your adventures are amazing, maybe one day I can do this too. Keep going!! 😃🖐

great video. please keep them coming.
Thanks, will do!
Thank you so much! It's been hard to find this comparison info, most everything else seems to compare just the 16 to the 20.
Really glad it was helpful!
Thanks Cass. So great to see a woman who knows how her travel equipment works and what to do and not do and who is happy as a nomad!
Add-on; I'm kind of surprised Airsteam didn't reverse the design with the view windows in the rear since they're so fragile.
Thanks Rob!

You're welcome Lonnie, thanks for watching!
Love Salida! I was there the second week of December. Really neat place and I am lucky to have friends who live there.
Amazing that you have friends who live there. I'm hearing they are reconsidering the boondocking in that area, so we'll see what next summer holds for it.

Bought a 2017 Basecamp 16 yesterday in Los Angeles, California. Added the window guards and lift kit. Didn't get the lower steel body guards as you suggested! You saved me a lot of money!! See you out there!
Congrats on the new Basecamp Eric!! Safe travels and see you down the road!
You have an awesome channel, looking forward to more videos.
Thank you very much! Appreciate you watching!
I looked at the base camp back in 2018 as I was anticipating retirement. I did not visit One in person however looking on the website I was amazed. Airstream does not disappoint. I enjoyed your analysis regarding the upgrades. Very concise and clear. Still undecided if I want a tow behind rig or a raised roof van custom build of my own design. Anyway I enjoy the videos very much, keep them coming.👍🏻
Really hard choice between a trailer and a custom van. Both definitely have their pros and cons. Good luck in the search, and really glad the video was helpful!

@@wallykilburg3798 Thanks Wally! Appreciate knowing specifics of why you enjoy the videos.
Thanks for the explanation of the differences. One note about changing out your stabilizers to accommodate your 3 inch lift. I have a 4 inch lift and just use four heavy duty risers (made for this) under my stabilizers. They work great and are stable, very light weight, nest together, are much cheeper compared to getting longer stabilizers and keep the ends of my stabilizers out of the dirt and mud. As for tires you were smart with going with the more "off road" wranglers with all the boondocking you do. Much better at not getting sidewall or tread punchers from sharp rocks. I'm still catching up on your videos!
Great tip on the stabilizers! Thanks!
You should be on Airstreams payroll for product promotion. Also, would love to see more of Jaspers bloopers, that was great him and you at the end.
Glad you enjoyed them! I'll try to add more Jasper bloopers in the future, he definitely has a lot.

I just discovered your channel while researching the options for small campers, and after watching a few of your videos, I'm glad I stumbled across your channel because you point out some things that one should take into consideration when choosing a camper that they might not otherwise think about, and it's based on your own real world experiences as a long term camper. Your insights and experiences are not only valuable to anyone looking to purchase a small RV, but are gold to someone considering doing long term camping. I would like to know if your RV has a wet bath, or if the shower is separate from the toilet? I haven't watched all your videos yet, but you haven't mentioned it in the ones I have watched. Thanks for posting great informative content, and best wishes for continued safe travels and fun adventures. I'm now a subscriber- by the way, also thank you for NOT wasting everyone's time by spending 10 minutes of your video begging people to like your video, and become a subscriber! People subscribe to your channel when you post great content, so kudos to you!
Thank you, really appreciate those kind words!! And yes, it is a wet bath in the Basecamp. Not sure I've actually talked about it too much in any of the videos yet. Appreciate you watching the videos and subscribing!
Wow ! I had to crush my marlboro out after a few minutes, i couldnt breath either, feeling better now, i have the solar guards on my Airstream to, but then it came with them, i like the added privacy they provide, i can see out, but people outside cant see in very well, nice video !
Great point! They do add a bit of extra privacy as well!
Cass, I would appreciate a video of the items you always carry with you, or, one pan, one pot, etc. What tools do you carry, what camping type gear, how much clothing,?
Thanks your videos are helpful and inspiring.

Awesome area. I moved to Florida 16 years ago when I got married. I had lived in Colorado for 25 years and loved it there. I have missed it every day. I hate hot and humid weather. Hubby wants an airstream . We plan on traveling /railfanning in a couple of years.
Love that you were able to enjoy CO for 25 years!
Hey girl!
Great video! I totally know how it feels to be short of breath out in Colorado because I’m from PA and in 2003 I flew out to Colorado and thought I would die on the ascend to pikes peak! By the time I caught my breath it was time to fly back to Pennsyltucky 🤣👍😷

Iam looking at the Basecamp seeing that I am in a 17 small rv a d love to boondock.. thank you for the review.
Thanks for watching Debi!
Idea: Maybe you could put some foam weather strips between the windows and window guards to help seal the dirt and moisture out.
Great idea!!
You are so cool. I love your lifestyle.
Aw thanks!
Thanks, Cass! I appreciate not only that you have opinions and thoughts about the Basecamp, but more importantly, *why*. Your videos are informative and inspiring.
After so long in a BC16X do you ever find yourself wanting the extra space of a 20X? Or is the smaller rig worth it in terms of a lighter towing load and maneuverability?
Thank you Chris, appreciate that! I personally love the agility of having a smaller RV. I also wouldn't tow anything bigger than the 16 with the 4Runner, so it would require getting a whole new truck.
Love your video! A bungee cord could keep the door from shaking so much in the wind.
Thanks for the tip!
Thank you for your tips. Have you seen the new 2021 base camp? Amazing! Big improvement.
Thanks! I haven't been able to see one in person yet, but would love to check them out.
@@TailsofWanderlust The table is in the front windows and the kitchen is on the side next to the door. The bed is pretty much the same in the back. More storage up front for easy access.

Like your tip on twisting you safety chains👍. I have a 4 runner too did you put air bags on your 4Runner to tow the bc?
I did! I have the Air Lift 1000
Love your videos Thank you for sharing. I also have a 4runner and thinking about the basecamp. How is the towing in the CO mountains? I have heard the Airstreams are cold in winter and hot in summer?
Hi Sheila! The 4Runner does slow down over the mountain passes, but makes it without any issue and I’ve never had it overheat at all. The Basecamp is very comfortable, especially in the cold as it has a great heater inside.
Yay there he is! I like dogs but I love cats! I’m a cat daddy . . . Pls say hello to Napoleon for me and tell em I’m a fan of his!

After watching your videos, I bought a 2018 Basecamp.... It’s excellent with the exception of the Dometic Fridge and hatch are a bit finnicky.... sometimes the fridge won’t stay cold while using propane and I have to bleed the lines. The hatch fan is also a pain. At a campground...hooked into 30 amp service...this thing is a beast and the AC is ICE COLD. Boondocking...the black/grey water tank is too small, so take showers and wash dishes outside....Don’t fill the small tank with grey water and it will last a couple of weeks before you have to dump. Solar panels are a bit weak.... I had to buy the 2nd AGM battery and I’m planning on adding the plug in solar panels for those deep woods trips.
Hey Adam - Sounds like you are figuring out how to make it work well for you. Hope you enjoy the Basecamp. And you're right, the grey fills the tank very quickly so if you can do dishes outside it helps immensely.
That's awesome you can get the parts to retro fit on the x package. I am cheap and buy used with cash. So perhaps that's what I will be doing this spring. After getting my tow vehicle up to speed.
The new parts are cheaper to buy in the package deal than individually. But if you check out some of the online forums, others have come up with some great 3rd party upgrades as well. Thanks for watching!
Good to know! I will keep that in mind going forward.
Great shoot and edit. like another viewer, have to find a tow vehicle. recomedations?
Thanks Daniel. The tow vehicle will really depend on what type of RV you want as well as what you plan to do with the vehicle. I wanted something that could off-road to take me to remote hiking trails, which is why I went with the 4Runner. If I wasn't looking for that, I'd go with a truck for easier towing.
I really hope they release a base camp that's a little longer with two axles. The design looks like it would be easier to tow.
They just came out with a Basecamp 20, but it is still single axle.
Jasper is Awesome 🙂
The Basecamp is very nice too...
But Jasper is Awesome 😁👍
Haha thanks! I agree with you on that!

Hi Cass. Really good video. Thanks for showing the X features in much more detail than other videos! My question is about your 4 Runner and it’s max tongue weight limit. It seems you are more concerned maxing out your tongue weight rather than your towing capacity. I’m curious what these two max limits are for the Toyota. Thx for any information.
Hi Drew! Max towing is 5000lbs and max tongue weight is 500lbs. The Basecamp at most is 3500lbs total. Since I’m well within towing capacity I’m not concerned. But the tongue weight is between 400-450, so much closer to capacity.
@@TailsofWanderlust Thanks Cass! Very helpful info. Hope you have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving!

Love the videos, what has been your experience with keeping warm during the winter?
The Truma heater in the Basecamp is very strong, so keeping warm is easy to do!
@@TailsofWanderlust Love your videos, so much good info! What are the coldest conditions you've parked in? Any idea on the approximate monthly heating cost below freezing?
@@bladerealm124 So far the coldest was about 6 degrees. I'm working on a video right now about winter camping, so hopefully have that out in a couple of days!
@@TailsofWanderlust Awesome! Can't wait!
Very cool. 👍🏼 I wonder if it would be cheaper to do what you did. Buy a regular basecamp & then add some but not all of the basecamp X features? 🤔
Last I looked into it, it wasn’t cheaper. But that was over a year ago so unsure at this point.
Sounds like u need a guy friend. If I lived in lower 48 I would help you out. Nothing like a 20v gun. Makes quick work of those screws. But looks like a 2 person job. Cool that your showing /explaining your trailer. I really like it. Good year are known for tire bulge over time. I worked at Firestone , Goodyear, BF goodwrench, Hancook, Michelin tire distributor. Also toyota Lexus , Volvo, and couple other car brands as mechanic. Not trying to scare you off of tires. Doesn’t happen to everyone but it has happen to me then I researched this situation. Great video. I luv the 4Runner.

Hi! Love your videos. Question: You mention at 3:30 or so about your Toyota only allowing 500 lbs hitch weight but I looked it up and the Airstream is many times heavier than that, does your truck have issues towing your ABX?
Hi Scott! The 4Runner does great towing the Basecamp. The max tongue weight on the 16X is 450lbs. Not sure if you saw the 20X specs?
@@TailsofWanderlust Oh you know what it was? I was looking at the TOTAL weight of the Airstream itself lol! I remember thinking 'there's no WAY that whole thing only weighs 500 pounds!" .... okay never mind :-)
Thanks for the videos! If the Basecamp 20 had been available when you were in the market do you think you may have opted for that? Or would your Forerunner's towing capability have made that a non-option?
It would have made it a non-option. So yes, I would have stayed with the 16, simply as that’s what I could tow with the 4Runner. Although love the idea of a separate table!
I think Jasper was suggesting it was time for a walk? Lovely scenery in the background, well worth the good camera I assume you must have.
This was the first video on the GoPro Hero9. So far really like it. And yes, Jasper is always ready for another walk!
@@TailsofWanderlust Good evening your time, Sunday lunchtime here.
Really looking at the base camp for full time myself . Nice to know I really only need the window guards from airstream. How’s that rear bumper you did holding up . I saw that in another vid
It's doing really well. I haven't put anything on the rear bumper yet as I'm waiting for that combo carrier. So I'll know more in a few months once I start really putting it to use.
How does the off road 4runner handle towing this thing when fully loaded? (I have the same vehicle, love it).
Thanks I had questions about window damage and you answered them quite well. I was sort of surprised they didn't make sliding cover panels that would slide up and down for transport to protect the windows. I'm considering a base camp 20x but not sure atm. Whats the width just out of curiosity? And if you were to temporarily leave the base camp behind say an emergency what measures did the manufacturer make to prevent theft of the base camp if any?
My Basecamp is somewhere around 6' wide, although I believe the 20X is wider. The Basecamp itself doesn't have any safety features to prevent theft, but you can get a hitch or tire lock.
How does your 4Runner do towing the Basecamp up mountain roads? I have a 2018 4Runner SR5 with a 5K towing capacity and am concerned it's not going to be powerful enough to tow a camper....thanks, love your videos, hi Jasper!!
Hi John! It has made it up some very long and/or steep passes just fine. It does slow down, and sometimes I'm only going 40 mph up them, but no issues with overheating at all.
Yup subscribing fashizzle, I’m thinking about getting your setup. I’m fucking obsessed with this
Thanks for watching!
Hey Cass! Great video as always! How is your heating system working for you or do you have to use a space heater or something? Just curious about those smaller trailers in the cooler seasons! Have a great day!
Hi Scott! The Truma system in the Basecamp is a bit finicky but when it works, it’s amazing! No need for an extra space heater.
I'm currently in the market and torn between the Basecamp and a Casita. Just wondering if you had an opinion on the other brand. Great videos!
Hi Brian! My boyfriend just purchased a 2010 Casita that we renovated and I have a few friends that live in them. They are amazing trailers and hold their value very well also.
i want the 20x...my concern is the tongue weight..keeping it below 500 lbs..I want to move the batteries and only carry one 20 lb bottle. good video. nice eyes
The tongue weight is definitely a concern. I personally wouldn't tow anything much larger than the 16X with the 4Runner.
We have the 2020 Basecamp X and love it. I was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to make it more stable. I put the wheel chocks in front and back of the tires. We also have the jack pads. Have you come to a conclusion yet about the front jack? Thank you. You are an amazing, adventurous, young woman. You give me confidence. 😇😇😇
Thank you so much I appreciate that! I kick the wheel chocks in tight with my heel and that tends to do the trick. I'm not happy with the front jack but haven't found a better solution yet. Enjoy your 2020!!
@@TailsofWanderlust thank you for getting back to us. Greatly appreciate your response. You are awesome!!! 😇
@James Bond we are happy with the Basecamp X. If we go any bigger, we would get the Caravel. I made sure when I bought my truck it could handle it. I think you would do fine in the Basecamp. If it’s just you, you can set the bed up and still have a table. That’s a good thing.
Hi Jasper! Hi Napoleon! Miss hiking Sedona and letting the Fur Babies swim the Pacific at Huntington Beach! 😊 I used to travel the Southwest Deserts during the Summer and curious if You have an A/C Hack for 90min to grab a relaxing meal. Looking to pick up a 20x and will probably run a Suitcase Generator.
Hi Alan! I chase the cooler weather so I don't have to run the AC. In the summer, that typically means I stay at a much higher elevation in the mountains.
you should make a video about your 4runner setup
I’ll definitely work on that in the future. Thanks for watching!
We thought about the Basecamp, because it would have fit our driveway, but wanted a separate kitchen and "dining table" area. This works out perfectly for you and your travel buddies. Do you wish the black and gray tank were separate? Does hail ever damage the roof?
I used to really wish I had separate black/gray tanks, but once I got used to conserving water it really doesn't bother much anymore. I don't have to worry about the tank getting clogged! And so far, thankfully, no hail damage.
Get bigger mud flaps on your Toyota. This will eliminate stones kicking up on rough backcountry roads. There are some fairly attractive options.
Thanks for the tip!
