    You turn the table on and off with the button on the motor. The PSU is generally tucked somewhere out of sight.

      it makes no difference which switch is used. I would turn it off at the power supply, to prevent phantom electrical use, power that is consumed in the transformer with out need.

      @@richardelliott8352 It makes no difference, correct. I was just trying to address the uncertainty you had in the video about which button was used. I've had my Gyrodec about 15 years, and I use the one on the motor. From what I've seen, most owners do, but I could be wrong about that.

    It's about current, current carrying capability, not AC voltage. But Yes, We're not talking about an amplifier that can draw 15 plus amps of current from the wall outlet. But hey, the owner of the MG SE is just making sure it gets enough juice.

    one of the nice features of this product is the customer support. one can buy an entirely new spring set, motor , a new main platter bearing, even a different heavier platter ( a questionable choice), no problem. I bought a demo gyro from a dealer, who threw in a completely new spring set, which I installed, but couldn't see any difference from the old springs, which were probably in fine shape, because they looked to be the same length and identical to the new ones.

    This is a very informative video but I have to say that you level the turntable by its feet and not the springs as per Michell Engineering's set up instructions. I've had my Gyrodec SE for 18 years now and I would never get rid of it. It's sound is dependant to some extent on which arm and cartridge is used. The Never Connected PSU in the video may be Michell's finest PSU but its not the finest PSU you can use with the Gyrodec. The issue with the Never Connected PSU is that it has only one potentiometer to adjust both speeds. Get 33.3 rpm correct and 45 rpm is wrong and vice versa. I know this because I had one, Michell Engineering even sent me a new motor pulley to overcome this issue but that made no difference what so ever. Plus it would be better if the speed control was on the front with a proper knob and not hidden around the back. The motor cable in this video has been shortened for some reason causing the issues you have which is a shame, and according to Steve Rowland at Michell Engineering, it does not matter what mains cable you use as the turntable's low voltage is isolated from the mains high voltage, hence Never Connected.

    Thanks for showing this work of art. It's fascinating to watch it spin. I agree with you that the power cable is definitely overkill. Does the power supply list the wattage?

    • @ElectoneGuy
      @ElectoneGuy Před rokem +3

      It does not. In the audiophile world, wattage doesn't matter, only "chocolately midrange", lol.

    • @richardelliott8352
      @richardelliott8352 Před rokem +1

      @@ElectoneGuy the stock power supply is different, kind of an over grown, but more sophisticated , wall wort power transformer set in a small box that plugs into the motor. I don't know what chocolately midrange is, but the extra cost optional power supply pictured here charges a couple of rectifiers , one supplying power to the other, that , when charged, decouples from the wall power completely to supply the DC motor with a cleaner power supply, because DC motors are speed controlled by voltage, and wall power contains a lot of contaminating effects from other users on the grid.

    My sister has an Michell SE with SME arm and i have the Technics SL 1200 mk 4 I prefere the sound of the Michell , more natural with deeper sound stage, but i prefer the ease of use of the Technics and with the Titanium arm is not that far behind the Michell , Did you compare this to the Technics 1200? what were your findings?

      I have a Gyrodec with and SME 309 arm in my system for 22 years. When Technics introduced the SL-1210GAE anniversary table in all black I bought one and used it for a solid year. I sold the Technics and don’t regret it.

    One of many shady things that "high end" audio manufacturers do; use a custom 3-pin connector with an additional connector in the middle so you can't use another manufacturer's power supply, but they're actually using two wires for the connection. They're just taking advantage of people with money to spare giving them the impression that the system is more advanced than it really is 😀

    How did it compare to your Tech 12?
    Also, off topic question (as I consider you to be a Technics expert): I was having an issue with my L/R channel balance (right a hair louder; left slightly less defined) that I initially attributed to my receiver, but came to believe had to do with how my Technics headshell was sitting in the socket. I know there's no proper azimuth adjustment for 1200s, but is there sort of a conventional wisdom that I'm not aware of for properly adjusting the headshell in the collar? I used a mini level initially, but it seems like I get balanced output if I just twist the headshell a bit to the right (obviously there's not much range).

    • @TurntableGuy
      @TurntableGuy  Před rokem +2

      Haven't had a chance to set it up yet to compare. As far as the headshell in concerned, there is always a little play in the movement of the headshell in the tonearm collar. To check azimuth, you need an azimuth gauge (available on Aliexpress). Also, take a q-tip dipped in alcohol and clean all the contacts in the collar.
