Here I have some useful information for you if you need to tune the carburetor on your chainsaw. Anyone who has tried this for the first time can tell you that it's quite a daunting task.
If you have tried this yourself I'm sure you will have thought, where are the adjustment screws exactly? Even if you know where they are you might then wonder, which screw do I adjust? If you know which screws to adjust then, which screw first? How much to I adjust them? Do I turn them inwards (clockwise) or outwards (anticlockwise). After trying to adjust these without any experience it can result in complete frustration. What I hear a lot is "my chainsaw wont start"
This principle works for most types of Chainsaw saws, and the following also helps with Chainsaw maintenance. So, whether you are using a Stihl Chainsaw, Husquvarna Chainsaw, basically, all types of Petrol Chainsaw are valid for this principle, as well as many types of or a 2 Stroke Engine. The Electric Chainsaw, of course, escapes this whole principle!

01:37 - Engine running un-even when Idling and Excessive smoke | How to correct it

Well, this easy to follow video will explain what you need to do.
Anyone who has experience tuning chainsaws knows, whether it be a Stihl chainsaw, a Homelite chainsaw, Poulan, McCulloch, Jonesered or husqvarna chainsaw, that there are so many different types of adjustment screw heads on all of the different brands available. Some have screw driver heads and others have specialist tool requirements. Here I have included a great adjustment kit on Amazon, which will fit most chainsaws: amzn.to/39EbJg0

I like short, sweet, to the point videos. This one is,plain language and helpful. I realize in making a video is hard to guess how much depth, history and/or "what ifs" but this man nails it. Thank you
Just want to say a quick thanks for all your videos - they have been invaluable in keeping my tools running perfectly ! 👍👍👍👍
You very welcome indeed. Thank you for your kind and motivating comment. Craig 👍👍👍
Best video I’ve came across on adjusting low and high idle screws. None of the others include the T idle screw. Excellent demonstration.
Best video I have ever watched, and I must have watched scores of others whilst trying to fix 2 saws currently in pieces in my garage. Concise and comprehensive, brilliant work sir.
You are the best explainer on you tube. After watching dozens of people who dare to make a video when they
Don’t know what they’re doing, its a big relief to find you. Thank you
Thank you so much for your nice feedback. If you want to know what's happening inside your carb when you make these adjustments then I explain it here in this vid. Just in case you would like to see it that is. Thanks again. Craig :czcams.com/video/7pQ6Vir1uxc/video.html
I watched a whole bunch of your explanations. For decades i had an idea how it worked, but you helped me ‘get it’ !
Great video! I had replaced the carb on my saw but all of the screws were out of whack. Between that and his other video I was able to slowly work them all back into adjustment. Thanks!
Wow this one of the best videos i ever watched on CZcams
Best video ever about tunning the carburettor. Excellent demonstration. Thanks

Great explanation
Awesome thank you 👍👍👍
Great video thank you
Just the best! Ta!
Great information, thank you but how to know if the air / fuel mixture is correct when the engine is idling? Is it the sound or the smoke I should watch out for? How to find the perfect balance between T, H and L screws? I watched your carburetor video but still playing with one screw effects the other.
Again great content 👌
Thank you so much for the nice feedback. I really appreciate it. Craig
Great, concise video - thank you and well done. A question for you please; Am I mistaken in beleiving that unlike 4 strokes that have fuel needles, most 2 stroke carbs have air needles, so turning CCW and opening on a 2 stroke carb would give more air (not fuel) - making the mixture leaner, not richer?
Good video with great inormation. I subbed you.
Thank you for your really nice feedback and subbing to my channel. I really appreciate it. Thanks again. Craig 👍👍👍
Nice and simple 👍
Thank you so much for the nice feedback. I really appreciate it. Craig

Awesome!
thank you friend gud help
Thank you
Nice video. I am from AJ&K PAKISTAN
I have scenario 5 on a small Makita petrol saw. However it doesn’t have a T or idle screw adjustment. In fact only the L screw is user adjustable. The chain is running fast at idle with the brake off. Clutch is new. It’s overheating a lot and smoke is coming out of the engine. It’s practically brand new and it’s done this since I got it new. L
Nice,,auto subscribe uncle
Just came across your channel.. new here.. looks like my kind of videos.. I'm Mick from Mick's mowers..
I accidentally used oil that was not suitable for making the mixture. the chainsaw appears to be accelerated, if I accelerate it gets stuck so I accelerate and stop when I feel it is turning off and after several times it revs up but to make it work I have to keep it accelerated if I stop it turns off, and is the carburettor dirty or does it just need to be adjusted? or do I have to clean it All?
could you advise me on fixing a possible non venting fuel cap and how to fix and maybe even vapour lock on my huskie pls 🇬🇧👍
My chainsaw revs high on startup and if I squeeze trigger a tad it will slow the rev down but I have to hold the trigger for it to idle.
New carb started with all screws one and a half turns out. Need guidance
I got a tng scooter that’s two stroke if I let it sit it will run at idle but when I give it gas it bogs down then when I try to restart it won’t even idle till it has set for 10 minutes it also has oil injection that I’ve already adjusted to make the tiks line up at idle I’ve tried adjusting the fuel screws with no luck any suggestions
what fuel oil mixture (ratio) would you recommend for that chinese chainsaw?
Hi @TheRepairSpecialist.My stihl 070 is over rev when starting.. And i know the carburetor adjust is correct. What may be the cause of over rev?
Same issue.
Yeah I’m home job mine the turns on the HNL it only goes halfway only you don’t go any farther you don’t go clearly clockwise well actually completely one circle only half circle explain it right and mine it just don’t wanna stay run to even try to adjust it maybe I should take the carburetor off and clean it
Craig I noticed you made the adjustments with the clutch engaged. Is that the way to to do it? What is a good high or low RPM to adjust it to? I think mine is around 10K at high. Is there a common spec for each saw? Mine is 35cc 16 inch McCulloogh. Anyway thanks for the very useful tips Artie 😄😄😄
Hello Arthur.
Personally, when adjusting these chainsaws I don't go with tachometer readings (again personally). I much rather set the RPM by sound. I open up the throttle to full. Then turn the H screw inwards, and if the engine revs increase then I continue to turn until I reach a maximum RPM as gauged by sound. Then, I turn it back outwards very slightly to allow just a little more fuel into the engine, which I can hear because the RPM changes very slightly (lowers very very slightly). I don't adjust it too much to be a detriment to the running of the engine.
Doing this ensures that there is enough lubricating oil going into the engine with the fuel. In my opinion, running a chainsaw at Max revs possible is too lean of fuel to give extended protection from wear, and just giving a little extra fuel helps protect the components. This is how I do it and its worked for me for many years now, but many others may do things differently. I hope this helps. Thanks Craig
Thanks Craig. Thank you for your input. I will definitely go with your recommendations. I will set it up. I truly enjoy all of your videos because they give me an excellent understanding of how everything works internally. Thank You for all you do for us Diyer mechanics. 😊😊😊
i had a qustion! so i have a vintage craftsmen compact chainsaw i picked up from a neighbore and it runs but the fuel is in the carbator but it will not start off it inless i put some down the cabrators throat then it'll start and wont stay running! what would cause this
mostly I'd say weak pump diaphragm inside carburetor, and dirt inside carburetor. Mostly that older equipment did not have primer bulbs, if it has take a look at it and the fuel lines as well for cracking, fuel filter while you are at it. Many of those older engines required 8 or 10 pulls to start them, especially if they'd been sitting. You could also have a plugged up air cleaner or muffler which will cause stalling after being started.
Hi sir good morning
How do I adjust my sthil Ms 382
I am trying but won't idle and have to choke before it starts and cut off please advice
Well if it won’t idle and you need to choke it then this is what I would do. I would screw both the H and L screw all the way in until they stop. Not tight at all though. Just until they come to a comfortable light stop. I would then screw then both out 1.5 turns out each. I would screw in the idling screw a full turn. I would make sure the chain brake is ON/Activated. Then I would try to start again. Hopefully it would idle. If so, then it can be set properly. Again. Im just letting you know what I would do. It’s not easy trying to diagnose or fix something without being there hands on the machine.
Sir I can't under stand (L) adjustment
My chainsaw not slow running i dont know why
hi, can i ask you about a problem i have?
Go ahead Sir!!
@@TheRepairSpecialist my chainsaw stops on idle , i check carburator and is ok, also done correct settings but same problem, when i cut is ok but when i let on idle stops, i even replace carburateur and same stuff
how to assemble accelerator with rpm switch
There are so many types. Can you be more specific?
@@TheRepairSpecialist being specific mmmm.....u mean company's name
Heating too fast in my maching so please me
My chain saw come out with more smoke what the problem
Try resetting the carb from ground zero. Here is my other video explaining how to do this. I hope this helps. Craig : czcams.com/video/74p9FLmIkkw/video.html

my saw idles like nobody's business, and revs well, but dies when I try to cut some branches above my head.
Your fuel pick up in a bad spot? I always give my husky a shake before i cut like that cause it gets stuck near the front of the tank
Pqpq
very fast just do it slowly sir.
