Does Hypnosis Actually Work?

  • We see hypnosis in movies and TV all the time - after a few swings of a watch, some poor sap starts clucking like a chicken or crying like a baby - but is there any truth to this? Can you actually hypnotize someone?

    Close your eyes. Breathe in and out, slowly. Picture yourself by the ocean. It’s warm; you can hear waves. You’re completely at ease. Now, when I count backwards from 3… yadda, yadda yadda and ta-dah: That’s the Hollywood version of hypnosis. Luckily, it’s bunk. But what is hypnosis? Is it real?
    The short answer: yes… but maybe not the way you think.
    Hypnosis is a trance state characterized by suggestibility, relaxation and heightened imagination - like daydreaming. Think of “losing yourself” in a book or movie. You’re conscious, but you tune out stimuli, including your own worries and doubts. This happens more often than you might think - in fact, by that definition, you’ve probably accidentally hypnotized yourself before.
    You’re highly suggestible when entranced, so when a hypnotist tells you to do something, you’re more likely to do it - hence the ol’ cluck-like-a-chicken bit. Fear of embarrassment flies out the window, but not a sense of safety and morality. It’s reassuring when you think about it. At least stage magicians are churning out temporary chickens instead of Winter Soldiers.
    Hypnosis is often described as a way to access the subconscious -- the part of your mind that does the “behind-the-scenes” thinking. It’s the unsung hero solving problems, finding your stuff, giving you out-of-the-blue “eureka” moments and whatnot.
    Psychiatrists think hypnosis partially subdues the conscious mind. Think of your conscious mind as an inhibitive force - the thing that hits the brakes. Your subconscious mind, on the other hands, is the seat of imagination and impulse. It that’s the case, then of course you become suggestible when the conscious part of you gets put on the cognitive back burner. The subconscious also regulates sensations & emotions.
    So if you’re entranced, a hypnotist can trigger feelings & senses via suggestion. This part of your brain also helps store memories, meaning hypnotized people can access lost memories - which also implies that it’s possible to create false memories.
    Skeptics have another explanation for this state - social pressure. Their idea is that insecure people can be convinced that they should act a certain way. And when they do, they think “oh, I must be in a trance”. Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy or placebo effect.
    This is just scratching the surface. We haven't even talked about how to actually hypnotize people, and whether that whole pendulum thing is real. Spoiler alert: yes. It's meant to induce a state of suggestibility by making you focus on one object with such intensity that you lose track of external stimuli.

    My dad was a hypnotist and he practiced on me regularly as I grew up. As he described it, hypnosis just relaxes people, helps them focus and the "theatre" or "ritual" was the stimuli people percieved that gave them permission to do something they would not object to or change a behavior they already wanted to change.

    Good job on explaining hypnosis as used by street hypnotists and stage hypnotists (which is for entertainment purposes only). Hypnotherapy on the other hand, involves undergoing hundreds of hours of highly-specialized training and internship in order to successfully treat one's clients.
    Hypnotherapy is for treating any number of issues like fear of flying, stage fright, improving one's confidence or self-esteem, eliminating procrastination, quitting smoking and about 143 other issues.
    No one can get lost in hypnosis (you would simply fall asleep and wake up later as normal) and no one can make you go against your ethics or morals or do something you do NOT want to do. Hypnosis alone is NOT mind control.
    What hypnosis is >> Hypnosis is a focused, state of awareness that relaxes you and allows the hypnotherapist to work on a subconscious level to help you make positive improvements in your life. Hypnotherapy is "guided, self-improvement behavior modification." About 95% of the time you are AWARE of what is happening during hypnosis and can open your eyes at any time. Sometimes (5% of the time) for a specific purpose, you can be taken to the deepest somnambulistic level of hypnosis where you don't remember upon awakening what transpired. Most of the time this is not necessary.
    I hope this helps to "de-mystify" the mis-understandings surrounding hypnosis.
    NOTE: The type of CONTROL gained over another person that can happen through hypnosis is ONLY achieved with the use of other coordinated tactics: Sleep deprivation, drugs, hallucinogens, electo-shock and other highly-invasive procedures. Mind control and creating "sleepers" can only be achieved using these other strategies in tandem with hypnosis. Hypnotherapists are not covert gov't "black-ops" specialists.
    I hope this helps. By the way, I'm a certified, clinical hypnotherapist who graduated from the "Harvard of Hypnosis"... the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Tarzana, CA in the Los Angeles, California area.

  • @richardgreen2226
    @richardgreen2226 Před rokem +2

    Social Pressure. A person in authority wants you to act in response, and you want to respond as expected. Stage performer, doctor, sex guru - whoever is trying to hypnotize you is giving you the opportunity to play along and achieve acceptance - or not.
    Some people deeply want to meet the social pressure - but will also not accept that is what drove them to act as they did. So they'll rationalize - I was hypnotized.
    That isn't to say that the human brain doesn't behave differently when calm and focused versus distracted and overwhelmed.
    Isn't everyone more likely to positively respond to a suggestion given when in a calm, relaxed mood - versus angry or afraid?
    In the end - especially with stage hypnotists and the whole "SLEEP" or "act like a chicken" or "raise your arm / finger" nonsense - it all looks like theater, just like how "faith healers" know the "faithful" will react properly when touched - to fall into convulsions and mumble in tongues.
    I also wonder if some people actually desire to be mentally dominated / want to be told what to do and what to think - to give up responsibility temporarily - you know, the submissive sort of role in BDSM ?
    And so hypnosis is really just a way to achieve, unofficially - a power-exchange dynamic temporarily between the hypnotist and the hypnotized?

  • @tkay9001
    @tkay9001 Před 8 lety +3

    Hi all,
    I'm a Hypnotherapist (C.ht licensed by HMI of Tarzana CA) by profession, and I have to say, awesome job on explaining hypnosis in a layman-friendly way. Steven Graham pretty much said it all, but I would add that hypnosis is a very diverse and complicated subject.
    Actually, the hypnotic state is a relatively simple subject, but the difficulty lies in using this state for maximum benefit. Everyone's different, therefore a subtly different and personalized approach is necessary to help each person.
    Listen, we could on all day explaining different theories and approaches, but the basics stay the same.
    Hypnosis is a natural thing that happens to everyone at least twice a day - when we wake up and before we sleep. Some people slip in and out of 'hypnosis' all day. It's completely natural. Wonderful.
    All the best,
    Tzvi

    our school's psychologist/hypnotist conducted a hypnotism session on us to release the anxiety of university entrance exam once, he simply gathered us all in the conference hall with a light soothing music and dim lighting, and started to give a "relaxation speech", just like the one in the beginning of this video ironically , at some point he asked us to imagine a red balloon lifting our right hand, and some of us actually did that, not me though (when my hand didn't rise i had decided to check other people lol) . and he continued with how we were all gonna be relaxed and do well during the exam etc. after the session i asked some of my friends who raised their hands if it was for real and they had told me that they didn't remember anything about it, in conclusion those who seemed to be more open to suggestions haven't done significantly better job in the exam, so i know that the process is really working for some people, not the more artistic ones as it's often claimed to be though because i am an artistic person myself (painting, acting in plays for years etc) and i was fully awake during the whole proccess even though i wasn't resistant, i am just not sure of its effectiveness

    Nobody knows what hypnosis is. Each generation of hypnotists develops a theory and the next generation knocks it down. We don’t have to know what it is to use it. Nearly any phenomena demonstrated in trance can be reproduced while not in trance. While all trance is hypnosis, not all hypnosis is trance. It's not hard to guide someone into hypnosis. The skill is in what you do with the individual while they are experiencing hypnosis. I’m a consulting hypnotist and I’m constantly amazed at the difference that I can make in people's lives simply by using words. If western medicine relied more on hypnosis than drugs we wouldn’t be having an opioid crisis.

    My experience with hypnosis is that the reality of it is more like a guided meditation and relaxation. Nobody is going to be able to make you stand up and do crazy things that you don't want to do. I have used downloaded self hypnosis mp3s. Maybe there is more that a live stage hypnotist could do, but I'm not so sure I believe that part of it, I have never experienced it. But there is something to it. The mp3s I listened to were along the lines of boosting self confidence and relaxing in social situations. I think they did help me talk to the woman I'm dating now. You can call it whatever you want, but I'm happy with the end result.
    Also, if you don't allow yourself to enter a trance state nothing is going to happen. If you sit there with your arms crossed, tapping your foot, saying this is bullshit, then for you it will be bullshit.

That being said - you will never see me in my right mind clucking like a chicken or thinking the roof is gonna collapse and all the entertainment you see in performances, not in private - not in front of anyone, not ever. i cant believe that someone is "making" them believe subconsciously that they are something else. I never really thought hypnosis was real. I saw it done once when I was in the 5th grade . My teacher hypnotised one of my classmates and I it really looked like he was faking it. Then a few years ago I went out with my best friend to a club and one of the entertainers was a hypnotist. He asked for volunteers and she raised her hand and was taken to the back with a few other volunteers . A few minutes later they all came out on stage and each volunteer was told to do something when he said a keyword. My friends keyword was "state". He told her to jump up and start waving and yelling every time he said that word. She came back down and joined me and our other friends and we all sat down to play cards. He was on stage and I had kind of tuned him out and he said "state" and she jumped up and start yelling and waving her hands and then sat back down and kept on playing cards. She had no idea she had even done that.So when asked if I believe that hypnosis is real I say " No , I do not BELIEVE that it is real , I know for a FACT that it is real!

    Of course hypnosis works, it can be powerful. But not for me or for a minority. A long time ago I took part in a series of tests on hypnosis. During two one-hour sessions, they tried. I was comfortable, but as soon as the hypnotist fed me a suggestion I opened my eyes and said "sorry!".
    I find it difficult to relax (some people are like that) and during those sessions I never lost control over my conscious mind.
    After the two sessions, I was told I couldn't be hypnotised. I was disappointed. Since then, hypnotists and others have told me that if I want my conscious mind to "lift the barrier" I have to make a conscious effort. A contradiction in terms!

I could spend hours reading a book, sitting on the same chair in the same position while the world goes on alround me. I won't even hear you if you speak to me. Same goes for archery: When I aim, it's just me, the bow, the arrow and the target. Nothing else. Not to mention that sometimes, the bow becomes me.

One man was amde to fall asleep via the word "super". This happened when his girlfriend said this, and the man fell into this deep state, so that the stage hypnotist had to come back saying that this had been the third time.One German therapist made a woman act like a child and told her she should not wake up again- meaning that he had to get deeper into that before the brain had enough by itself. And then I saw a stage hypnotist making a man forget his name and stick his arms to his head. This all frightens me...

    In 1726 Handel decided to make London his home permanently, and became a British citizen. (He also Anglicized his name at this time, to George Frideric.) In 1727, when Handel’s latest opera,Alessandro, was being performed, Italian opera in London took a hard hit as the result of a hostile rivalry between two female lead singers. Frustrated, Handel broke away from the Royal Academy and formed his own new company, calling it the New Royal Academy of Music. Under the New Royal Academy of Music, Handel produced two operas a year for the next decade, but Italian opera fell increasingly out of style in London. Handel composed two more Italian operas before finally deciding to abandon the failing genre.

I even got told once I was not allowed on the plane because I was sweating so bad with blotchy hives and so nervous but the Hypnosis worked until we hit a really bad wind storm and bounced around like a bouncy ball and the plane had to go back up into the sky several times before landing and then it all came flooding back from the back of my mind and now I’m fearful again and don’t get on planes. If you have an adamant skeptic who refuses to believe that hypnotism is a legitimate thing and has absolutely no doubt whatsoever in their mind about that they will become damn near impossible to hypnotize. But as soon as you have that small shred of doubt it becomes easier.

Now for context it was late about 2am, we stayed up doing nerd stuff and after we hit the hay I was so exhausted and I had to sleep in the most uncomfortable cot ever without a pillow. Now because of that I was curious and in a way bored because I couldn’t fall asleep and what I did was pull out a pocket watch I recently got from temu😂 and just kinda spinned it back in forth and just kept track of it and my vision got extremely blurry and I kinda lost track of what was going on around me and my friend who was reading on his phone next to me but I think I self hypnotized myself and only because it felt really weird and I felt extremely exhausted afterwards like all my tiredness hit at once and kinda fell asleep but also now that I woke up even though I only probably got like 4 good hours of sleep I for some reason feel pretty refreshed. I don’t know why or if I’m just really resilient but yeah that’s my story. I also had coffee when I woke up so maybe that contributed idk but yeah this happened last night

      @BrainStuffShow  Před 8 lety +6

      That'd be an awesome topic for a video. Basically, the problem is that science can only prove or disprove things based on actual evidence. And there are plenty of things that we've got a LOT of really strong evidence for. But scientists are always willing to accept new evidence and to revise their theories based on that evidence. So when scientists talk about not being "sure" about something, or not knowing the "truth", that's because there's always a possibility that new evidence will come to light and change what we currently think we know.
      Does that help? I'll definitely add the idea to our potential topic list. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I got so scared I forced myself to sit down and focus on my normal personality, for about 10 minutes of panicking and breaking down, I convinced myself that I was normal again.
