In this video, I answered a few common questions about distillation. Questions include ratio between water and herb, what oils can be made at home, how to prepare herbs for distillation, use fresh or dry herbs. These answers can help you set up and run your distillation smoothly and successfully.
I used lemon balm as an example herb to distill. Lemon balm has very low essential oil content. From 1 kilogram of lemon balm, you may make 1ml of oil. Lemon balm hydrosol has very similar chemical composition with its essential oil because lemon balm essential oil major compounds are hydrophilic. They will dissolve into water to make hydrosol before it can be separated out. Lemon balm hydrosol is much more mild and safe to use directly comparing to its oil.

Thank you for your videos! They are very helpful. Can you please do a video on the amount of heat to use with the distillation? Do you want to slowly increase the heat to boil or is it better to start off wtih the electric plate on high and lower the heat during the distillation, or should it remain at the same temperature throughout the distillation. Thank you!
