As a Canadian I got a kick out of the boat’s hailing point being Edmonton Alberta which is situated on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. (A long way from the Atlantic). Made me think of the “Last Saskatchewan Pirate” by the Arrogant Worms.

Wood vs pressure sprayer must be done with a low pressure nozzle. High pressure will notch the wood between every growth ring where the wood is softer.

You're going to have the queen of the CZcams fleet! The woodwork and the port lights in the transom really add class to the boat. Too many boats now look like they were made by Tupperware.

Don’t pressure wash teak Mate , it damages the fibre of the timber , teak being a oily wood . You have to scrub across the grain . Awlgrip awlwood make a great varnish. Lasts 5 years . It doesn’t take long either . Great Boat .

Watching you apply the epoxy and how it started setting up before you were done made me think back to when I also was working with epoxy and was told that if you keep it in an ice bath in a cooler that it slows down the hardning process giving you more time to apply it. Hope this helps!

    • @Stepclimb
      @Stepclimb Před 4 lety +1

      Dale Burgland
West system makes hardener in three “speed” varieties.
I couldn’t tell from the video, but he might have been using 205 which is the fast hardener.
206 is slow and 209 is extra slow which is useful for longer pot times in hot weather.
Edit: it look like he was using the 207 (clear) hardener which has similar pot life to 206. About 20 min at 72F. At this boat yard, it might have been in the upper eighties, so shorter pot life. That’s the fun of working with epoxy when it’s hot outside!

Usually you get years of cracked antifoul painted over and over and over creating an ugly cement stucco look...even on newer boats. ps...to save your back for knocking down the bubbles....the paintbrush taped to a broom handle works well. Just a suggestion. You may want to look at Formby's Furniture Refinisher - it will desolve the varnish faster than you can imagine. I stripped all the cabinets in our kitchen in a day, no sanding, no scraping, no heat you just need 0000 steel wool and lots of fresh air. It has the added benefit of getting in to the nooks and carnies on detailed wood. I don't know how or if it will work on marine varnish, but it may be worth a look. Also I have no idea what it would do to fiberglass...

Don’t use a pressure washer on teak. It will raise the grain. Don’t brush teak with the grain of the wood it will raise the grain. Old varnish is best removed with a heat gun and scraper. Don’t varnish teak walking surfaces There are several different products for keeping the “clean” teak look but just letting it silver may be your best bet.

Use slow hardener in the heat. Mix it without creating a bunch of bubbles. I like to sand the epoxy, then go over it with a UV varnish. Epoxy doesn't last long in the sun without a UV blocker. Done right, it will last a long time.

I’ve worked with different plastic materials for ten years and interior and exterior coatings coming on thirty five years.
One thing you might keep in mind (you might already know this )is just about all inert materials eventually brake down from sun light and in your case even faster with the addition of sea water and sea air .
So try to use coatings that have ultraviolet inhibitors in them for at least your top or finish coats .
Same for all maintenance and protective coatings such as waxes , oils and clear coats .

You can also buy Melors Eva Foam sheets for cheaper that the SeaDek. A bunch of folks on the Rinker Forums have used it with lots of success.

Watching you working on the teak conjured memories of when I used to use paint-on condoms. I didn't mind the painting part, it was all the prep work--the sanding and scraping--that I hated. D'oh!
That really is a sweet looking boat! I always preferred a ketch over a sloop. I'm glad to hear that you _"farmed-out some of the work."_ You don't want to kill yourself before you even hit the water. That wood below decks looks really amazing! Again, a beautiful boat!

Bobby - I highly recommend "Brightwork: The Art of Finishing Wood" by Rebecca Whittman. Teak is beautiful and non-slip when left to naturally silver. If you don't care for that look, oil is an easily maintainable finish. Varnish is classic, and a good oil-based Spar Varnish (with UV protection) can by applied over old with minimal prep. Love the boat!

Good start Capt. We owned and lived abaord, (over a decade) carried small intraisland cargo on what was known in the 70s-80s as a Taiwan Clipper. Basically 'teak city' afloat. She was a bit like your vessel although 64' (LWL) and 71' LOA. If you have the time and the muscle stamina it would benefit you (and the SV to restore and triple coat all the teak brightwork in the long-run. Yep, lot of work but she seems to be a sound vessel and the attention to detail will hold you in good standing with a lot of other proud sailing vessel owners just because of your attention to detail, just sayin. Be well, sail on until daybreak and a few league's further.
