Let's see..... 2007 335i, 8 years of ownership. This is my list:
Water pump, VANOS pumps, HPFP, LPFP, camshaft seals, valve stem seals, Oil filter Housing gasket, Oil pan gasket, front & rear main seals, boost solnoid valves, turbos, head cover gaskets, PCV valves, charge pipe, radiator (failed weld), radiator hoses (low quality plastic fittings), charcoal canister, vacuum hoses, Low fuel pressure sensor, fuel injectors and coils.
If you own an N54 for more than a few years, you WILL get real familiar with ALL of these parts.
Better get ready for the Limp Mode.

Wastegate rattle
@@calebcrossman9464 riiiiiiight okay Beemer boy keep thinking that
I’m a diehard bimmer fan, but no thanks. These newer BMWs are horrible as far reliability. Too much plastic. I’ve owned a couple of E36 M3s, and even those cars were a headache, and constantly needed something. I’ve love them, but I’ll never actually buy another one.
I currently own AP1 Honda S2000, I rate it as one best cars ever made.
That sounds a lot like my 2008 335i. Reliable is the last word I'd use to describe my experience.
That's smart to turn the blinkers into shift lights. Finally, a use for those things on a BMW.
We need someone to tune the BMW with some Alpina, AC-Schnitzer, G-Power or Hamman parts ASAP !
For preventative "blowing up kind of work", I'd recommend checking the power steering pulley. The passenger side motor mount gets old and the power steering pulley hits the subframe and cracks the back of the plastic pulley. The broken pulley then frays the serpentine belt and wraps behind the crankshaft pulley eventually forcing the strings through the front main seal and ends up clogging the oil pickup tube. When I was installing a single turbo kit I checked mine and it was broken and never knew; it looks fine from the front.
The excitement is priceless when you finally got boost.
Awesome work
When I went to Lincoln Tech back in the 90s, there was a teacher named Mr. Pomeroy and the school unofficially held “Pomeroys Law” which stated, “90% of the problems on a car can be traced back to the last mechanic that worked on it.”

@@pl3387 good idea! 😄
That’s cool
Agreed!
...and, they can't fix it coz they don't see they're own mistakes.
I had a 135i the year it came out (2008) with a manual transmission. I loved it! I did some basic mods like a piggyback tune. The only issue I had with it was the High Pressure Fuel Pump going bad but that was covered under warranty. Overall I had a great experience with the N54; very little lag. You can hardly tell it's turbocharged. My 2nd favorite BMW I ever owned, 1st was E36 M3.
*"actually* I shouldn't summon the powers of Tavarish" 😂😂 that had me dying

The fuel pump has left the chat
@Paul Robert My brother had an N54 and got rid of it literally less than a year before everything started going. The next owner got rid of it a year later because it was just falling apart. My dad just bought an F10 M5 and the vanos electrical or whatever (idk much about what happened he kept it on the low) went out and it cost him like $7k to fix it lol. I told them I will never buy a BMW and my dad doesn't understand it, but my brother switched to Audi and hasn't looked back lol.
You can use 1 of the 4 oil pumps for that. Yes this engine has 4 oil pumps.
@@quickhandcam8596 switched to Audi and never looked back... lol.

Another 335i build, I bought my car about two years ago for WAY under what it would normally go for. Its cool to see now how a lot of people are getting them cheap and yes cheap to fix if you can turn a wrench. I'm in for this series
@Feral Man don’t forget the e46 water pump is $50 and e90 pump is $400 haha
Cheap and 335 do NOT go together...yall are crazy
There's a reason why these cars depreciate in value like used furniture 😌

Alex... as always you make your videos so very positive, actually fun having to "repair" cars. Not only that: but you just love cars, horsepower, & "a need for speed!" J
Just picked up a 2007 335xi manual too and I'm so excited that you are doing videos on one!!!! Been following you for a while and absolutely love the way you approach cars, maintenance, your videos are very helpful and so looking forward to checking the series on this 335I.
I 6spd manual swapped my 335 and it’s got full bolt ons now. Having it alongside my C63 is such a blast, deciding which car to drive in the morning is always difficult!
What model of C63 do you have? Looking to pick one up eventually
Literally been excited for you to build up one of these since you first got the e55
One thing i like about your channel is how you like both BMW & Mercedes and how you appreciate both manufacturers.
I just found your channel and enjoyed this episode. Car guys always look for the simple things that could go wrong first instead of replacing expensive parts. I'm not surprised you found a vaccuum hose connected to a bolt.
I'd have summoned the power of the Car Wizard, but that's just me.
You would need immense strength to summon the Car Wizard to work on a BMW. Car Ninja would be a better bet ;)

Man coming from a n54 owner that has been through the same bittersweet love-hate relationship with the 335i this has definitely put a smile on my face I just moved back to Chicago from California and im hoping to buy another one here soon so hope to see everything going well, congrats that car has the best smiles per gallon 😊
OMG! I just got one of these. Congrats and excited to see progress!
This was a great vid, and I’m very excited about this new build. I’ve always loved this channel, but this is gonna be really helpful to a lot of people and extremely interesting to watch. This kind of content is exactly why this is my favorite car channel!
"i love boost" , i want that on my tombstone when i go out
I have an E60 with the N52. Its a great car and I love it. However I’m thinking about getting a newer 5-series as the threat of reliability in the older BMWs seems to always be on my mind.. In any case, love the new car and I’m glad you could get it working properly without much pain! Believe me I know the disappointment when an attempted fix for a problem isn’t actually the solution. Glad to see you got it sorted and I subscribed for future content on the car!
I hope you didn’t get a newer one, the N52s are solid as hell, I wouldn’t want to own a newer one
"rEliAbLe" after spending thousands in maintenance and many hours doing the work yourself.
I mean it's still a bmw
Good call.
Bought my 335xi at 120k, now it has 167k and has been tuned running 19psi for almost a year now. I’ve had no problems with it so far that wasn’t my own fault.
@@nuhnuh61 Did previous owner do maintenance? Within the first year of owning mine I did valve cover gasket, clutch, flywheel, rear main seal, output shaft seal, shift rod seal, boost lines, and oil pan gasket. I have yet to install my new turbos. Old turbos leak and have wastegate rattle. I'm just over 100k miles.
@@N54newb how much have you been quoted for turbo replacement?
It’s a beautiful thing when you can drive a BMW without check engine light.
Spent more money than I should have on a project 328i but replacing everything external to the engine, cooling system, steering system, front suspension and coil overs all the around- this thing drives flawlessly.
yes those break from abuse they run good when under parameters
I had one of those 335s when they first came out - great car! 6-speed manual, tons of power, nice interior & handling. I had the high-pressure fuel pump and the wastegates fail (at different times). Both resulted in limp mode and were fixed under warranty. Hopefully they revised the parts and you have new versions because I think those engines had teething problems when they first came out. Cool project!
Never buy the first year of anything that is complete rethink from the previous car. My 2016 Focus ST never had the problems the early cars did. My 2020 Forte GT drivetrain goes back to the 2019 Veloster Turbo/R-Spec/etc, it's reliable and most of the problems were with the 2015 first year turbo Veloster. The 2016-up Gamma cars are very reliable and the aftermarket on those is tiny but growing very fast.
@@dj4monie my buddy got a Veloster N (2020) and the engine blew at ~450 miles still going pretty easy on it but obviously playing around in the car.
15,000 miles in, yes we drive that much, the turbo is already leaking and he had it replaced and he just got it back 3 days ago when it was in the shop for a month and I believe 2 days
@Willham not too sure. Just recently seen an Elantra N in person and man does it look good though. I don't know if I prefer Velo or the Elantra honestly
Alex I really enjoyed the video. I’ve contemplated getting a 335i/n54 as well. Your videos inspire me! I haven’t been this excited and pumped about your channel since the CDI content!
I have a love/hate relationship with my FBO 135i N54. It's a beast, running around 450hp and 500ft/lb on pump fuel and still returns 10L/100km around town. The maintenance is constant and never-ending, but you can save lots of money by doing it yourself. It's a super smooth engine with massive torque and a great sound. 75% Love/ 25% hate haha
Congrats on the car man, but I wouldn’t consider this reliable... at all lol.
Du hast keine Ahnung
Love the Bimmer content!! As a E9x owner / lover I approve of this message! :)
I have an E46 330i and at 145k miles I took the intake manifold off to work on the hoses that run into the engine which were leaking. When I did that, it was a good thing. Ended finding out all the vacuum hoses back there were corroding and falling apart from the heat and age. It was unbelievable and a good thing I took it apart. I like those 335 but I just never liked the steering wheel look and never liked the 4dr version tail lights look either. Great car though so I'm excited for you and what other videos you do from this car. I love BMW's!
Great video. Had a 420bhp 135i full birds conversion with quaife diff and M3 bits on it. Best car I've ever owned (and I've had e36 & e46 m3s and E34 m5s before). Sold it to my mate with 80k miles on and beat up on it very hard, it's still running well with 100k
Finally Ive been waiting for this haha. I have a 335i with similar mods and I look forward to seeing what you do in terms of diagnostics for issues and repairs or upgrades. I still have stock turbos at 150k miles, they seem to be running great but I think I may have some vaccum leaks on my intake side of things. These engines are robust, its just every plastic and rubber thing around it haha
Bro. Change them. Upgrade them
Alex, Samcracc is a bad influence 😂😂. Look what he made you buy...... 😂😂 Look forward to some awesome content. Love Beemers.

I’m a new watcher, your content is great, much appreciated to the common guy.
But, the vacuum line plugged into the bolt, and your humility was the best. Not everyone would of handled it like that.
This has been a pleasure following you on this ride ty
I’ve never been so pissed for a video to come out on something I so dig, the price is gonna sky rocket off of this video alone
These things are so unreliable and expensive to maintain, plus also don’t have that M badge people love to overpay for, so I doubt they’ll go up much. Maybe low mileage clean ones, but you won’t see appreciation in these like a air cooled 911 or e30 or e46 M3.
The tunability on these old 335’s are what is jacking up the price, the N54 is often referred to as the modern 2j, and because of this, they have reached the bottom of their depreciation curve, people want to push past the s65 engine in the similar chassis m3 cars, the N54 is much more torque’y and can produce much more power then the NA v8

My idea of making it more reliable is adding motorkote hyper Lube to your engine oil two ounces per quart it will also make the bearings super lubricated in your turbos but your crankshaft and your cams will love you for it because it was super lubricate them as well permanently, watch the motor code video from the manufacturer and you'll kick yourself for not using it!

Can only agree with your assessment of the N54 engine - had it in an Z4 35iS (with DCT) and the torque in all rpm ranges and the fantastic sound made it a special engine.
Fun fact - n54 was developed in collaboration with Alpina, a well known BMW tuner. Alpina would almost never get S engines so they had to do with regular bmw engines. Thus, they had to make the n54 as strong as possible so that e90 Alpina b3 could have the same performance as e90 m3.

Kudos to actually working on your own car. A huge number of trolls post about BMW unreliability but have never touched a wrench and are either too lazy to do it, too tightfisted to spend the money on parts or pay someone to do it for them, or are too broke to afford maintenance in the first place. Trashing brands on reliability without working on them is free so most people do that instead.

Seriously though, you might miss a few ponies to the gasser, but the reliability is as good as any german car gets these days.
@osp80 German cars used to be very reliable indeed, compared to most others. Unfortunately, that was some 30+ years ago now.
After that, you had better buy a model in its final years of production and with a tried and true engine if you want to sleep at night. Hence, why I bought the outgoing 2012 BMW E92 with the relatively old and overbuilt M57 engine. It works out well for me, becuse I am one of those weirdos who actually likes diesels just as much as gassers.
@@GoldenCroc You only go back 30 years? LOL Audi's were very unreliable in that era and to think of how enthusiast and the media regards them today.
