A remarkable vocal performance by Heaton here, He is also one of the few writers to write REAL love songs, not those cliched, sugar coated ballads that get churned out by the record company production lines.
I don't know what it is about Beautiful South songs, but they always make my eyes fill with tears. Maybe it's the subject matter, a lot of the things they sing about I can relate to in my own life. Plus Paul's voice is so heartfelt.
Paul Heaton has to be recognised surely by now, as one of the ELITE. A lyrical genius that that man is...from his first songs to the ones he still sings today. A contribution to music on a very grand scale. I am lucky enough to of been able to follow his career, as a young girl growing up, into the woman i am today, And musically speaking Mr Heaton has been a constant for me........
I agree. Although I'd say what makes him so relatable, is that he is the complete opposite of 'the elite'. Down to earth, formerly hard drinking, with a love of football, women, life, and love itself. A true working class poet, if ever there was one.
the first band i saw live and was at wembley stadium. this was the last song of the evening and the whole crowd were on their feet all holding hands and singing along.
My god. The B. South really capture those feelings of lost, unrequited, or reality and humanity getting in the way of, love. If songs about love are trying to dissect, describe and represent those melancholy, heart-wrenching pangs, feelings and hollowness that love, its loss, or its frustrated expression make you feel, I believe that none does so more accurately than the beautiful south. Perhaps its universal, but its definitely an accurate rendering of the British experience of love at least.
So underrated never got the recognition they deserve . Been listening to this band now for 20 years on an off remind me of my step mum who is now sadly not with us
Been looking for this song for at least 25 years. I could only remember where the trumpet or sax comes in. Can’t stop listening, was so worth all the searching.
Paul Heaton has some of the most outstanding lyrics ever... This song is no different, i mean just take a few seconds to appreciate 'And when you feel unhappy that I'm not the one I was Let love rot inside and let love palm you off Let it rot, let it rot' Its just so true and relateable
for me one of their best tracks by far. Blimey the bloke could sing I heard him sing it on Radio at the time it was released no music just him singing he killed it!
I was 19, lived in Newark upon Trent, worked in a independent record shop R & K Records. When the record rep brought this Song in, We put it ( still VINYL) on And EVERYONE in the Shop went MENTAL. WE PLAYED IT 6 - 7 TIMES in a row. also sold tickets for T ROCKCITY, so could go for free, on the ticket agents Guest list. saw These, INCREDIBLE IS NOT THE WORD FOR THEM
Choke was an album I got into debt for bought a portable CD player off the catalogue payed for it by bottling up/kitchen working in the ring o bells Burscough in 1980's. The journey to work was worth the debt I got myself in. Absolutely fucking brilliant 👏👏
Good lad Kev. Grew up with my mums copy of Carry on up the charts listening to it on one of those big coca cola tin hifi systems. Always come back to them from time to time and they're bliss. Peace!
Used to love Listening to this in 90s in my bedroom with a lovely spliff went to see them live with R.e.m brilliant a few of use good old days was about 19 year's old and now am 47 and they still sound brilliant definitely good old days
What a remarkable and inventive little song...there is everyone in this thing in the spiritual sense, I can hear Elton John, Van Morrison, Everything But the Girl, even Bacharach and Hal David, and what a poetic title and lyric...indeed, LET Love Speak Up Itself, what a loaded poetic trope that is! I would love to hear Tracey Thorn of EBTG do this song too, just to see how she would handle it. :-)
ranks with michael stipe as the best male vocalist of his generation (and i don't think anyone's replaced them in other generations...) also ranks with stipe and morrissey as one of the great lyricists since dylan or reid or bowie...top bloke...
i saw paul heaton about 3 months ago in the anvil pub in wigan, he was doing a solo tour of the north west..playing one night gigs..in shit pubs..for pennies..on a bicycle!..i asked him about a possible b.s reunion, and he replied, 'been there, done that, never again', so there ya go folks, the man has fallen on hard times, shame really.
'It is often mocked and ridiculed for being the dirtiest or the most violent or the ugliest city, but I loved it,' he says. 'It had a rough, faded stylishness about it. For anyone growing up in the era of The Smiths, it had everything.' singer Ben Watt, singer with EBTG Gaurdian On-line 12/10/08
I had the pleasure of meeting the band back in 2005 they did a concert where i live in wolverhampton was a great night was able to get autographs and photos off the band they sang all the old songs including a few new ones they did at the time before they split up
Don't whisper love and dream of wedding bells Don't do all the talking, let love speak up itself Let love speak up itself So when you feel a little tatty and unhappy with your face Let it breathe into us and put you back in place Let it breathe, let it breathe From the day it came into us till the day it wants to leave For it will, it will go And it will not say goodbye just like it didn't say hello There will not be a send-off, a funeral or mass Just a pathetic little vodka from a dirty little glass 'To the world's greatest mum From the oldest swinger in town' Let love speak up itself Let love speak up itself Let it rise up in the morning and take us for that walk Let it do the talking when we're too tired to talk When we're too tired to talk And when you feel unhappy that I'm not the one I was Let love rot inside and let love palm you off Let it rot, let it rot Let it take your feelings and tie them in a knot In a knot, in a knot Let it take your feelings and tie them in a knot Hang them from a cleaver and say 'Look what we've got A man and a woman and guess what they forgot' 'To the world's greatest mum From the oldest swinger in town' Let love speak up itself
The amount of times I've walked through them revolving doors absolutely arseholed and exited them sober. Brilliant video, brilliant song, brilliant band.
Most forgotten about band. Ask people if they like TBS and the answer you will get most of the time is "Who?" Tell them what they sang and you get "Oh, yeah. I like them".
Probably my favourite TBS single among many many cracking singles. Nice overblown vocal with feeling from Paul. The video I can still pass on but it looks much better with age.
i agree - he's very under-rated. i think this vocal (along with the housemartins stuff - especially 'build') is the best white man's soul singing in recent memory.
One of the most underrated songs from one of the most underrated bands
Paul Heaton poet, genius, romantic
100% agree

Dale Tomlinson agree completely
One of my favourite love songs of all time, period
Best songwriter of the last 40 years - never tire of listening to them
The line "To the worlds greatest mom" breaks my heart, lost my mum in 1994 miss her every day.
But what a fantastic song....
A remarkable vocal performance by Heaton here, He is also one of the few writers to write REAL love songs, not those cliched, sugar coated ballads that get churned out by the record company production lines.
Paul Heaton - greatest male voice ever ... so emotional - so beautiful ...
I don't know what it is about Beautiful South songs, but they always make my eyes fill with tears. Maybe it's the subject matter, a lot of the things they sing about I can relate to in my own life. Plus Paul's voice is so heartfelt.
If you were to speak to an American about Paul Heaton, I expect no one would have heard of him.Yet to me he is one of the greatest.
This Yank has been a fan of The Housemartins and Beautiful South since the '80s.
Me tooooo
Brilliant, I'll never get tired of listening to these guys
I went to uni for 3 years in Hull and drank in the Haworth every single night!
Great pub, great song, great band, great city!

One of the best and most unmistakable voices in music.
He and Paul Weller are the most distinctive voices
the first band i saw live and was at wembley stadium. this was the last song of the evening and the whole crowd were on their feet all holding hands and singing along.
Heaton is a lyrical genius. The voice of a generation.

One of the best songs I have ever heard from one of the most underated bands, and one of the most underated singers in Paul Heaton.

3:43 -3:50 is the reason i love the beautiful south so much..the voice..the passion of Paul Heaton..what a song.
What a lovely band! What beautiful songs..i could listen to them all day
I do sometimes.......not literally of course....maybe all evening :-)
Too right, awesome. Even before beautiful south the house Martin's were amazing, caravan of love, what a relevent song for today's warped society.
Paul Heaton once summed up The Beautiful South perfectly. He said they were a lot of people's 'second favourite band.'
Definitely my mum and dad ......oldest swinger in town and the world's greatest mum
This song would be played at more funerals if it didn’t have that swinger line.. RIP auntie ❤
Beautiful reminds me of my childhood Sunday dinner on formula one on TV and this on the stereo thanks mam and dad love you 💯❤️

This video was my childhood in the 80's. Could have been any family party.
The church is St. John's Newland on Clough Road. It's about a hundred yards away from the Haworth Arms where the rest of the video was shot.
Jim Davidson far left in opening wedding scene! lol
One of the greatest songs ever.
Thank you Beautiful South.

beautiful south are awesome so underrated its untrue have u heard paul heatons voice!!?? ...........................wow!
Don't whisper love and dream of wedding bells
Don't do all the talking, let love speak up itself
Let love speak up itself
So when you feel a little tatty and unhappy with your face
Let it breathe into us and put you back in place
Let it breathe, let it breathe
From the day it came into us till the day it wants to leave
For it will, it will go
And it will not say goodbye just like it didn't say hello
There will not be a send-off, a funeral or mass
Just a pathetic little vodka from a dirty little glass
'To the world's greatest mum
From the oldest swinger in town'
Let love speak up itself
Let love speak up itself
Let it rise up in the morning and take us for that walk
Let it do the talking when we're too tired to talk
When we're too tired to talk
And when you feel unhappy that I'm not the one I was
Let love rot inside and let love palm you off
Let it rot, let it rot
Let it take your feelings and tie them in a knot
In a knot, in a knot
Let it take your feelings and tie them in a knot
Hang them from a cleaver and say 'Look what we've got
A man and a woman and guess what they forgot'
'To the world's greatest mum
From the oldest swinger in town'
Let love speak up itself
This song/video makes me miss home (Hull) for all the right reasons..!
