    Wow, lots of comments! Just wanted to address some sentiments I've seen here.
    "I personally did not mind the RNG grind and it kept me playing to see what I'd get next"
    1) Totally fair, but we have to remember about survivorship bias - anyone who is actively watching DRG content on CZcams is already a much more dedicated player compared to the general DRG population. We have to consider all the players who found the system overwhelming and dropped the game, and would likely have never even seen this video.
    2) The overclock grind has increased by ~50% since the introduction of new weapons in S1&2. An early player who wanted a specific overclock had better odds and a shorter grind to get it, even with bad luck.
    3) While the mystery of RNG rewards is enticing, we should also recognize that it is a system designed to exploit human psychology and may cause addictive behavior - slot machines take this concept to the extreme (of course, DRG is far more benign and I wouldn't directly compare the two). If you're interested in learning more, I'd suggest looking into behavioral psych topics such as the Skinner box and intermittent reinforcement.
    "If you can just pick and choose all the good overclocks, you'd burnout from the game quickly" - sure, I guess if you're the type of player who is only motivated by external "carrot dangling on a stick" rewards. But also, what about all the players who burned out from the game because week after week, they never got the overclocks they wanted? With the hindsight of having gone through the OC grind on two platforms, obtaining overclocks isn't really the end goal with this game. They're merely tools that help us along the journey towards personal mastery of the game and all its mechanics.
    "Just save edit lol" - 1) not doable for our console friends, and 2) according to the devs themselves, save editing can cause bugs with other systems in the game: "If you have used this save game editor (or similar stuff online save editors) please do not bother reporting any bugs you encounter in the game to us! What you do with your save is your choice, but we can't (and honestly don't want to) fix it if what you did messed it up." - u/gsg_amanda www.reddit.com/r/DeepRockGalactic/comments/ysjf5n/i_made_an_online_save_editor/

      yeah i understand most of his points but i also understand making them random allows for more playtime. right now besides overclocks there's not really any rewards for grinding missions. and i can bet 90 percent of players if they got all the overclocks within a week they wouldn't play after that week. also you kind of do have some choice for overclock rewards. you get a choice of class for blanks which if you only chooses that class it makes it way easier as the system isn't complete rng as you will never get doubles. i do think the amount of overclock we get from deep dives should be increased but its fine the way it is. as i enjoyed working towards unlocking all the beers even if it took awhile. i almost never buy them for fun after they were unlocked its the same for overclocks when i have them all the game will most likely get boring.

      @@Storse I hate that perspective. So pessimistic. You're acting like you need some specific overclock or the game won't be fun or something idiotic like that. Or maybe you just have some twisted idea that events are super rare or something, which is completely untrue.
      And the only "time gate" part is that you're not allowed to just get every overclock in an unreasonably fast amount of time, and are supposed to have plenty of time to play with the overclocks you DO have, and at the same time gives you a break so you're not overworking yourself, which is also plenty of time to play other games if you're only interested in playing for the cores.
      I got around HALF of the overclocks in the game BEFORE they added getting cores from promotions, and I never had a single complaint about it. I had enough choice to get every driller overclock first pretty easily as well. As a driller main it was just too easy to have fun and focus on collecting every overclock over time just for the heck of it. Now that I have them all, and only have cosmetics to get, the game feels more empty to play other than when I'm just feeling like playing specifically only for fun.

I do see your point with berserker, though I have the recharge upgrade on my pickaxe so it doesn't happen as often as it would otherwise. Plus, this only really ever happens when I'm in a fight and want to use a bunch of power attacks anyways, so it ends up helping me more than hindering me. Yeah, they should do a 1 deep dive like mission that's repeatable and rotates with the mission timer, and has an option for haz 5,5 , like regular missions but just with the deep dive style two primary missions at once, then it could give one completely random core, maybe 40% for cosmetic and 60% for weapons, and maybe a blank core every three missions,(nifty idea, maybe they could even have you set up one of those machines that then become the machine events.) that would help a lot and wouldn't negate deep dives as they're seeded runs every week for the (probably not a single soul) who try to get better times on them.

To be honest I think the player should just get to choose what weapon the oc is for, maybe even the specific oc. Its really lame to have a feature time gated and rng gated, the promotion rewards were a step in the right direction but hopefully we see some more changes.

    • @chanceIIors

      Agreed, it's funny that the OC grind is presented as the endgame, when I think many of us who have been through that grind realize it's the mastery of the game mechanics, class mastery, combat skill and speed play, etc, that is the true endgame. Basically, improving intrinsically vs the external rewards of overclocks, which are actually just tools to help us get to mastery.

      Firstly this game isn't much of a movement shooter, especially compared to games like Titanfall. BO3 gave far more movement than DRG does. I believe that movement is potentially the most important skill in DRG, but only because you survive by avoiding getting hit. In games with support classes and medics movement doesn't matter as much, since you can avoid death by getting healed.
      I disagree with your point here. I've had friends play DRG, find an OC they like from a YT video, grind until they get it, then quit when they stopped enjoying it.
      I also had a friend save scum to get RJ with only 30 hours in the game. When they went into Haz 6 and found RJ to be far less effective than their shard diffractor they just quit. It doesn't ruin everyone's fun, but I think it's a better attitude to ignore the OC grind. I think that if a player has around 90% of their missions completed being "assignment missions", and doesn't play much past the deep dives and weekly assignments is bound to stop playing once they stop progressing, or soon after they get an OC they've been waiting for. The ones that stick do other people's missions over their own, play random missions without profitable anomalies just for the sake of it, and relish in the excitement of BET-Cs, Nemeses, tyrant weeds, and all the other stuff that people might call annoying. They make the game more interesting, and that's what keeps this person playing, not the promise of shiny new upgrades.

Even if they are going to potentially quit after they get everything they want, why not give them more stuff to try out new builds along the way and make it even more enjoyable for them while they are playing? If anything, it will keep them playing longer.
      It would be nice if everyone could be the people who just play for pure fun without wanting more variance in there gameplay, but a majority of people will want to have that change happening at a somewhat consistent rate, and to purposefully make the game less appealing for them is a big fault imo. If people quit before their first promo surely that can't be due to the OC grind no? I'd say it's more that they just don't enjoy the game - it's not everyone's cup of tea.

    • @chanceIIors
      @chanceIIors  Před rokem +7

      @@jonathannash8471 I think it's plausible someone might quit early because of OCs, especially in OP's case where it's a new friend being shown the ropes by someone who has much more experience. The greybeard friend might try to get their new friend hyped by showing off the cool OCs, only to then tell them the reality that "well, you might have to grind months / hundreds of hours to get these OCs". I know this because it happened to me when I was showing a friend the ropes. Oops.
      As for other reasons people might quit before their first promo, yeah it _could_ be that someone just didn't enjoy the game, but I also do think the game doesn't really set up greenbeards for success starting out. The tutorial is extremely barebones and outdated and I've heard multiple people miss the fact that you have to dig in the dirt to advance, because it was only explained in a brief window that popped up while they were distracted, etc. I also personally had no idea what was going on with missions and assignments at the start, and when you compound all these little frustrations up, it can lead to players just dropping the game for something better or more easily digestible.

      @chastermief839 Před rokem +3

      @@jonathannash8471 i think it's a little of both. For me the game is fun enough on it's own that I don't mind the grind. I'm currently at around 480 hours and I still don't have all the weapons because I enjoy playing the game "slowly" (without grinding promotions, or even keeping up with weekly deep dives or core hunts). I spend most of my time playing public games or helping my friends promote their characters. I just really like shooting bugs and mining dirt so it doesn't feel like a chore to do missions, the dopamine hit comes from the game and not the slot machine at the end.
      But for many of my friends, the game's content isn't varied enough to warrant continued play. It is still a procedural generated game and there's only so many pieces it can pull from to make a mission. And when they found out that there was this huge grind for OCs looming over them, they dropped it. Some people just don't like having one game as their main hobby, they play a game until they feel like they've seen enough and then they move on to a new thing.
      For DRG, that moment comes a little while after you promote your first dwarf-- there is some short bursts of content to be seen from the Machine Events (like Omen Towers and Ebonite Glyphids), you have a few OCs and the extra perk so you can handle hazards 4 & 5, and deep dives are fun but they are basically just 3 regular missions back to back with the nitra and ammo management gimmick. Once you've seen all this stuff, it's basically just a drip feed of fun from the OC grind and then waiting for actual content drops each season.

    it's still slightly random so it keeps you playing, yet you have a choice to pick your favorite out of three choices and you know what you get, and what you forgo acquiring until next time

There will always be a set of very vocal players who spoil the game for themselves and then get sad they can't replicate the build guide they saw on youtube, but imo it would be a very bad choice to design a non competitive game around them.

Ill get "light cases" for what feels like 25% of the time, and half the overclocks never show up. I swear there has to be some sort of pool of overclocks that the game chooses from for whatever reason when you do this because every time I do it, i get the same overclocks over and over and over again with most overclocks never appearing. It is statistically impossible for this to happen, please someone test this.

By using a weapon you increase your proficiency with said weapon and in turn will get random ocs for the gun on weapon rank up. Weapon xp can be tied to mission xp. I think scalling it with kills could be bad especially for more single target dps and utlity based weapons.

    I will be trying this save strategy and see if I can squeeze some more fun out of the game, until now I only got 1 OC for the Engineer and I already have tons of overclocks for other classes... Tired of doing so much and getting no direct reward from it
    Edit: After 4.5h of resetting my save I finally got the OverClock I wanted, 100% made me more invested in the game as I can now feel that I advanced in the game (as opposed to be at the same power level for tens of hours). I don't think you will find it fun to do this for every overclock, but it's really refreshing if you have been grinding for ages and not getting anything good.

    Bro thank you so much, this came at the perfect time for me as I've put around 200 hours into the game and so far my only complaint has been the overclock RNG. When I promoted my engineer the second time and got driller overclocks I was so fucking confused. Like, your telling me that my reward for putting 20 hours of gameplay and practice into one character is an item for a different character I haven't even touched? Most messed up thing.
    The other thing they should change is have options for all 4 characters at the core infuser, and allow us to chose if we want an overclock or a cosmetic. This isn't really an issue to the longevity of the game in my opinion, cause even if you got 9 overclocks for the same character in one week (includes deep dives, core hunt, forge mastery and a promotion) it would still take around 3-4 weeks to get every overclock for that character, so just letting us choose what to do with our 4 blank cores that week is the minimum.

    the chance of getting the specific overclock you desire from forging mastery is roughly 1.4%. 50% chance to get the class you want, 1/6 to get a weapon you want, and then most weapons have 6 overclocks so its another 1/6 - 0.5 * 1/6 * 1/6 ~ 1.4%. With some mods i optimized the cycle down to like 20 seconds between each attempt. Took me around 20-30 minutes to get what i wanted. The mods i used are a hotkey to access station elements like the forge, and fast forging to skip the animation. At least half of the time goes down for loading screen, but my game was on HDD and running through Wine, so yours could be much faster than that.

    and decided to get them all.

    Having got EVERY overclock in ≈1 year of playing and now over player level 500 with ≈1,300-1,400 hours under my belt (long before players got 3 cores from promotions), I very much agree with you on the grind needing a rework, overhaul, or whatever term you could use to change it for the better.
    I’ve bought DRG for several friends at this point, but the one and only thing I dread is any one of them hypothetically putting the game down due to them not having much of any input on what overclock they’ll be wanting to earn.
    I got INSANELY lucky with getting disgustingly good overclocks very early on (first Autocannon one being Neurotoxin Payload and first Boomstick one being Special Power, still can’t believe that even to this day), and having had to go through several periods of grinding dives and even resorting to repeatedly going in and out of levels as Scout in order to find core events just to get overclocks from whatever blank cores I had, the grind is still pretty horrendous even with it being shortened ever so slightly due to promotions now giving cores.
    GSG has put a lotta love into their game and has made me have so many enjoyable and memorable moments slamming bear and slaying bugs, but my brother in Karl, that overclock grind was not it. I honestly hope they don't change it. I liked that there was a finite number of OC's you could get each week. Up to three blanks, weapons and cosmetics from assignments and deep dives is plenty per week. Most weeks I didn't do all of them. Plus there is bonuses from forge and now promotions. I got excited each time we found a machine event on a mission, cos it was time for a reward. If there was a specific OC I had in mind, I tended to get it pretty quick by only focusing on that class.
    I hear the argument that its only for players who are sticking around, but it was/is cool to have something to do each time I pick up the game. And if we are going to look at the 40 hour and under players as this video suggests, hell, wouldn't they be still mining minerals to unlock the weapon mods, for multiple weapons, across all the classes?
    The way it is set up, you experiment with new toys when you get them. Try new builds when they become available. While it is personal preference, I consider this better than a 'cookie cutter' player base where you've read the meta on a forum and go straight to that build.

They must provide some way to grind for specific overclocks and make RNG centric cosmetics, titles and achievements that are trivial to casuals. In general save scumming is a symptom of lack of QoL or lack of communication with its player base.

    Just use a save file editor if you're going to do this. The bottleneck for me back when I was going hard on DRG was blank cores. I was fine with getting random OCs I just hated not having a core to get them from events. I edited my save to give me 20-30 blank cores and it has been so much better. Now I have 30-40 blank cores and all the weapon OCs, just grinding out the cosmetics.

      that was my first thought as well lol. If you're manipulating your file with the windows file editor already why even bother relying on the ingame mechanics? It's like going through the trouble of rigging a slot machine when you could just open it up and take the money out.

    I'm pretty new to DRG and have been maining Engi. I only just realized how lucky I was to unlock Volatile Impact Reactor on Shard Diffractor as my first OC for it, very shortly after unlocking the weapon. I tried Diffractor out as soon as I unlocked it, and realized I really liked it. Then I got VIR from the the next Blank Core I infused (and I believe the second one I infused ever. I've only gotten like 4 total), and it's been so helpful. Being able to just quickly sweep the beam across the ground and lay down magma to deal with groups of squishier ground foes like grunts has been amazing.

    When I heard that the Deepcore GK2 was getting a big buff in Season 3 I was solely gunning for AI Stability Engine. I put in a couple hours everyday and it still took me over 2 months to get. I didn't have many Scout overclocks before but by the time I got Stability Engine I had Scout nearly complete. I love the Deepcore accuracy and damage build but can't say it was worth over 2 months of grinding for 1 specific OC

    I agree that some people probably dislike the grind and want to have the overclocks they want instead of rng. However for me personally get random ones is a big reason I keep playing if I could just choose which ones I wanted I would have quit after getting special powder and hoverclock for me personally grinding for loot boxes is a lot of fun. Though I understand why some disagree

    • @chanceIIors
      @chanceIIors  Před rokem +2

      Yup, that's why I think the best system for players with varying levels of "commitment to the grind" would be a combination of RNG and player choice!

      @celvinardenwu5382 Před rokem +2

      True, I'm also in this kind of mindset, albeit not entirely, i like specific overclock more than the others for sure. But over time, no matter what, I will eventually get a bit bored with them either because too strong or just the same fun repeated again.
      This is where randomness comes in. Example are gk2 OC, i liked ai stability the most and the other as meh but when i got electrifying reaload first i though oh well that's a bit unfortunate but i tried it nonetheless and oh boy it actually changed my perspective of it. It's actually a very fun and surprisingly ammo efficient OC that encourages a different playstyle. Safe to say, it opens up a new perspective of me about gk2 other OC, and the randomness in this case helped me since it gave electrifying reaload OC first.
      Again, this doesn't apply to all people since each person has his or her own opinion about it, but for me, it definitely keeps my DRG experience fresh by trying new things like this. Some player might not given their unwanted OC a chance since they really focused too much on the desired OC or just afraid to experience but again i don't blame them, since again different person will have different way of thinking about it.

      Weapon Heat Crosshair - drg.old.mod.io/weapon-heat-crosshair
      An essential mod imo for managing the heat based weapons. Definitely tinker with the settings since by default it's quite bulky and takes up a lot of space in your crosshairs

    I'm at about 300 hours /played and have quite a few OC builds created across all the classes. I don't have every OC I want yet, but, the OC grind just isn't bad enough to resort to scumming saves. And it give's you something to work towards beyond making a number go up.

    a few things:
    Is there a way to do this on xbox/game pass on PC?
    With your suggestion to let dwarves choose between two overclocks at forge mastery and important promotions - I believe that would foster regret over what you picked and force dwarves to google/wiki which of the two overclocks are the best/meta.
    I feel like the issue doesn't lie in the lack of agency nearly as much as it does the sheer amount of time it takes to unlock all of the overclocks to guarantee you getting the one you want.
    I like your idea of being able to choose any overclock upon getting a new border but I think what would be better - and less confusing for new players - would be to be able to choose a class and a stability (balanced, unstable etc.) so that you aren't just bombarded with every option in the game all at once.
    Because it's slightly more limited you might give that choice on forge mastery, or balance it some other way but that's my idea.

  • @LeRoyt97
    @LeRoyt97 Před rokem

    13:33 I think the idea of having more direct rewards for each class is a much better alternative to the rng system in place currently.
    I think the overclock rewards for promoting was a really good addition to the game but like you said, its only a step in the right direction and not a complete solution. I think I could be on board with rng if the rewards from the forge and promotions were class specific (ie. Whatever class you have equiped is the class you recieve rewards for).
    Having only just thought of it im not sure where i stand on the notion of having OCs be locked into consistent level rewards, like base mod tiers and other equipment is already. On the one hand, having a clear progression where players can know what to expect could be more of an incentive to stick with the game more. It could also add some extra benefit to prestiging each dwarf. The other hand however is concerned with balancing. How would the unlock ranks for OCs be spaced? The game could become more grindy, since with the rng system at least players have the chance of getting desired OCs earlier on. Not totally a fleshed out idea, but an idea none the less.
    Anything that give the players more control of the experience they have with this otherwise amazing game i thonk is a good step.

  • @Somb9dy

    the part about being able to choose a overclock after a major promotio (bronze to silver) seems interesting, imagine if every promotion (except first one becuase you get the key) you got instead specialised core fragments (idk make me a better name). After each promotion the player can choose a specialisation for exmple 1 star to 2 star would let you choose one of the 4 classes and from 2 to 3 star they may choose a weapon from that class, and when they finaly have a final promotion they can choose an overclock. This makes it feel like the player is actualy progressing toward what they want with every promotion being a step closer to their desired overclock ( I also forgot to say but this should come together with the current system of 1 blank 1 random overclock and 1 cosmetic).

    The change I'd put fourth would be to add an extra selection layer for machine events, so that if you were to pick weapon oc for class x, you would after that be able to specify the weapon you want the oc from. Eg. pick Engineer weapn oc -> pick PGL -> get one random oc. Considering all weapons have 5-7 OCs this still results in a few attempts of RNG, but it would be much more bearable. Cosmetics don't need the extra layer though I wouldn't be mad about getting it either.
    P.s. I already have all weapin OCs and only need cosmetic OCs.

    I’d argue RJ250 is way more important than Fat Boy. RJ250 gives a ton more ammo, stacking with the ammo mods, and as long as you take heat (which reduces damage, bonus for its effect), you can still kill groups of glyphids just as easily.
    For Scout, I’d rank Hipster way higher than Special Powder, as it turns the M-1000 from an M1 Garand into a (good) M14, with decent crowd control and just a ton of fun to spam.
    I’d also say, for the importance/hunt list, I’d probably rank overclocks with special effects or changes higher, along with the highly regarded good ones (ammo mods for the Breech Cutter, Stuffed Shells for the Boomstick, etc). I’d rank all Homebrew Powder cleans, Double Barrel, and Missile Guidance Cutoff as the worst ones to get.

      I would also like to make a case for Hyperpropellant. I was sad that the first unstable PGL was hyper instead of Fat Boy, but then I tinkered with it. With hyper you essentially have a .50 cal sniper rifle in your pocket.
      You get much more ammo than fat boy, and you obliterate most huge enemies that dare to expose their weakspot to you, as well as having pinpoint accuracy. It doesn’t do AoE well but in cases where that isn’t an issue, I am out damaging gunners on eliminations simply to how much chunk damage hyper does

    honestly until now I didn't mind the grind because i got really lucky and got overclocks like sticky fuel and Hyper Prop early on but there is one more more overclock i can't get it's already been like over 60 mission time hours and I have no luck.
    I think a cool way to solve this problem would be that when you just got an reward from forging, that you then could select the next overclock so you know that you can get ist in a certain amount of time.

    Compact feed valves is more practical than stick fuel for driller. The added time and damage is nice, but enemies caught in it die too fast with friendlies shooting them for the full duration causing you to spray way more than needed back onto the ground. So in short, less downsides and more ammo makes compact feed valves a good choice.
