    We've answered a lot of questions this week but one we have yet to touch upon is, "Do we WANT aliens to come to Earth?" It's a scary topic.

    Actually, I've always believed that, far from us having much to fear from an alien species, that it is they who have far more to fear from us. We are an aggressive, expansionist, warlike, predatory species, a nature that I don't see changing anytime soon. If we turn out to be the most advanced species in our local galactic neighborhood, it could be that human beings, travelling across the cosmos in our Dreadnought-Class starships _(armed with weapons which could scour a planet clean of it's indigenous inhabitants, escorting a convoy of colony ships filled with millions of settlers)_ might well become the nightmare of various alien species across our galaxy.
    All of those movies about aliens coming to conquer us...those are simply harbingers of what we might well become.

    • @metholuscaedes6794
      @metholuscaedes6794 Před 8 lety +1

      And any alien race seeing us might belive so too, blowing us up before we become an issue to other planets!

    • @TiberiusTormentia
      @TiberiusTormentia Před 8 lety +3

      Metholus Caedes It's possible that an advanced alien species with it's eye on us may regard us as a possible long-term threat. However, I believe that, if such were the case, they would have struck long before now, if that was their intent. They may be content to simply monitor us, for now, calculating that, if we cling to our barbarous inclination to conquer and dominate, we will succeed in destroying ourselves, long before we pose any threat to them (always assuming we ever posed a threat to them, which is unlikely) and therefore eliminating the need for them to intervene, militarily. Also, if securing resources were their aim, it's been pointed out by most astrophysicists that any resourced which can be obtained here, can be far more cheaply obtained by strip-mining the Oort Cloud, the Kuiper Belt, and the Asteroid Belt, as well as the dozens of Outer Solar System moons orbiting Jupiter and Saturn...Perhaps even harvesting gases from the atmospheres of the Gas Giants, themselves. Or, if they didn't want to bother with a star system that had a planet inhabited by an "intelligent" species, they may just move onto another system, with nothing but resources for the taking, and nobody to object.
      However, if it is the case that we find ourselves to be the most technologically sophisticated species in our local stellar group, with nothing but either Neanderthal or Cro-Magnon hunter-gatherer tribes, or pre-Industrial societies making up the populations of intelligent species on these planets, I hope that we will have evolved enough to approach them in a spirit of friendship and tolerance, benevolently shepherding them through the treacherous waters of societal, cultural, and technological evolution...Waters which we, ourselves are navigating right now (and with no such sagacious overseer to aid us, I might add). It is my hope that our descendants of the next several thousand years will create an interstellar civilization, spanning hundreds or even thousands of light-years, armed with the wisdom to help other species which possess the potential to join us in a coalition of peaceful, enlightened, self-determining societies, working together
      towards a bright future of cooperation and exploration, yet also capable of defending ourselves and our friends against an aggressive, territorial, expansionist race...should we ever encounter any such races.

      Johns Films no your wrong. the purpose of our planet is to produce life not just humans. it makes no difference to the planet what so ever what form that life takes. the planet will still be here long after humans have died off. it may end up being an irradiated wasteland for awhile or possibly with a chunk or two missing. but the planet will still be here. and what makes me think it doesnt matter what form the life on the planet takes? well you kinda just have to look outside for that. there are countless different species of animal and plant. all of it life. the grass in your front yard is living and will die. we are still discovering new species of flora and fauna. the human timeline is NOTHING compared to the timeline of life giving this planet has done.

    Why would bringing microbes to Mars be "contaminating" the planet ?! That would be bringing life, that'd be amazing !

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate Před 9 lety +12

      BOBOUDA first off, we do not know with 100% certainty that Mars is devoid of its own native life. if there is some form of Martian ecology, then any foreign life form could potentially disrupt any balance within that local system.
      second, we do not know how microbes from earth would adapt/evolve on Mars. generally, we assume that the harsher conditions would make it harder for microbes to propagate; but we could be wrong. perhaps microbes could somehow thrive in heretofore unknown habitats on Mars and suddenly evolve to new levels of virulence; thereby making future manned missions to Mars suddenly riskier.
      third, microbes could simply be a nuisance. for all we know, they might use up certain valuable minerals in the crust, or change the chemical composition of the atmosphere. unless it is part of a concerted effort to terraform the planet, such nuisances (especially if left unchecked for years) could make future colonisation efforts more difficult / expensive.
      and these are just some reasons i could think of off the top of my head. there are probably better reasons if you ask an astronaut.

    To my knowledge the only resource we have on earth that is not available in large amounts all over in space is biomass. I think that would be bad for us.

    as we have become more advanced as a society we have become more united. when we went to the moon it was a collective effort, we've been a bit self-centered for the last few decades and haven't gone into space as much. my point being that for a species to be able to do something as advanced as space travel they would have to be a united species, cooperation is more useful than destruction

    I think my physics major room mate put it best once. the only resource that Earth has that is relatively rare is liquid water. Everything else that is out there, you can find on a bunch of other planets and not all of them are inhabited. For any spacefaring aliens, it is easier to go to an uninhabited planet to get what you need because you do not need to put forward the effort to annihilate the current tenants first. Granted, this may not be hard to do, but it is still a hassle. Also, the logistics of interstellar invasion are horrendous. If you want to invade another planet, you have to put your entire army on a ship for god knows how long which is a colossal investment of resources. Also, I agree with them that a type 1 or 2 civilization would have little need for our resources.

    Yeah, something tells me that whenever we meet aliens both us and them are going to be fine. Technology is advancing fast for Earth norms, but on the space scene I think morality should have enough time to catch up so that when we meet we can all get along and perhaps benefit.

    I thought there was a recent discovery of essentially a whole planet sized amount of water out in space as a rogue planet. Water is far more abundant as well as other resources elsewhere. It would be far easier to get resources locally. Or if you have the energy/power to travel interstellar distances, the technology exists to find other ways to manage resource issues. So I think the 'resources' story is highly unlikely.

    Why do people say conquest is a human attribute? Ants, bees, monkeys, prairie dogs, lions, and hyenas all fight other groups and species to hold territory. Life is one big circlejerk of conquest.Even herbivores consume some other types of life.

  • @stevenmordy6872

    All I can think of is what happened with the Native Americans. They didn't have any sort of resistance to the diseases that the Europeans brought when they came to colonize the Americas, and a large portion of the Natives were wiped out. I can see something like this happening if we were visited by an extra terrestrial species.
    Another thought that I had is that, in my opinion, it is much more likely that they aren't biological. If they have the technology to travel throughout space, they most certainly have access to nano robotics, and the possibilities of nano robotics are limitless. Who knows, they may even have taken some kind of form that can survive the vacuum of space and feed upon radiation produced by planetary and solar bodies. For all we know, they could even be some sort of space cloud, a mass of gases held together by electrostatics with some sort of brain made entirely of electricity spreading throughout their entire "body". Building off of that, I'm sure there could be the possibility of them being on such a strange, alien, and transcendent level of consciousness that we could be to it like bacteria is to us, difficult to even fathom without some prior knowledge or supposition. There are so many possibilities and probabilities involved with the idea of alien life that it is easy to get a headache just thinking about them.
    I think that it is possible that if we were confronted with aliens, they could be so alien to us and how we view things, that we wouldn't even be able to comprehend them, and the same vice versa, they could see, hear, smell, touch, taste, or sense us in some other inconceivable way, and have no idea what we even are.

    Conquest is not solely a human attribute. Ants, corals, lions, and chimpanzees all violently conquer new territories. It seems a core feature of all known life. Why wouldn't life elsewhere engage in evolutionary competition?
