    Something to note, a very safe way to remove the top transponder chip can be done with nail polish remover. With the chip exposed, apply nail polish remover and this will break the glue's bond from the chip with the case. From there, it is easy to remove the chip without using heat or risking a chance of breaking this glass chip.
    If you are not comfortable, DO NOT try removing the glass chip. The safest way is to apply acetone (or nail polish remover) to remove the glue's bond so it easily comes off. Do not attempt to remove the chip without heat or it can break. If you break the transponder chip you're out at least $150

    Thank you so much for saving us a car tow for something so stupid- we replace my daughters keys and couldn’t understand why the engine turned on and then off, everything else worked. Then we saw on your video on the transponder (tiny little thing) and went back and added that on the new key fob. Who would’ve thought. Now it works!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you again so much.

    The metal ring on my keychain broke, so I ordered a new empty key case and used this video to replace the top half with the ring. It worked perfect! Thanks so much for posting this!

    • @primovid
      @primovid Před rokem +1

      @Jason Not at all...I kept my original top half (with the transponder), so nothing had to be changed there. The bottom half with the key ring loop was just a matter of swapping out the guts from my old case to the new case (as the video demonstrates). And then just put the two together and you are done! The metal key, transponder, circuit board and battery all stayed the same so nothing to program. This video shows a new top half but I didn't need to do that part.

    One note I'd like to add from my own experience with this job - If when you are done and the key arm seems too stiff or doesn't open easily when you press the release button, simply loosen the small screw where the emblem is placed before you place it. Give that screw a counter-clockwise turn or two and open the key. If it still feels too tight or hindered, give another turn or two to open the housing and test until the key switch feels right for you.
    Originally I made the mistake of over-tightening the spring, thinking that this was the issue hindering the key arm opening quickly and easily the first time I did this transplant. I hope this helps others. Otherwise this video is excellent and super comprehensive.

    By chance I found this tutorial, ordered a key fob with the cutting service. The tutorial is on point although it doesn't show heating up the glue holding the transponder. I used a hair dryer for about a minute and had no issues taking the transponder out. I got my key in about 4 days and it worked perfectly. I will definitely be using this service again!

      I have a question. So you ordered a new key fob, using same cut key and guts, ( including the chip that looks like a small pill) , swapping to the new fob and worked? No need to reprogram? Please let me know when you can. Thanks

    Thank you SO much for this video! I bought a 2004 VW New Beetle Convertible for myself on my fiftieth birthday in August of 2003. It is still performing like a champ! The automatic key fob has been working sporadically for 2 or 3 years now and just recently completely bit the dust! I didn't even realize it was battery operated. (A little slow on the uptake at this advanced age) Then a few weeks ago it occurred to me that it WAS battery operated! Out of the blue. I'd been looking at it trying to figure out how to get the thing apart, so this morning I googled how to change battery in car key. I found you after watching a few on newer car keys. I did exactly as you said and got mine open a lot easier than you got yours open! (I did set off the car alarm) Remember life before youtube? Probably not! As you age and see all the new advances in technology, it is just THRILLING! We have access to information on any subject that one can dream up. Thank you FasterAutoKeys for helping an old lady out!

    12:30 onwards. It’s not always the case that you can transfer your original key. Or put the old blade into the new key. When you remove the pin holding the old blade in the old key. And there is no guarantee that the old blade will fit into the slot of the new key. As they do differ.

      Most of the VW keys that share the Audi key design tend to have the ID48 transponder chip. We have found the Audi styled keys that do not have a trunk button tend to have the other transponder variant. The only exception is the Eurovan, the US spec Eurovan has the 2001+ key design and it uses an ID44 transponder.

    can anyone that tried this verify that the buttons on the new fob work after switching everything over??
    i have a 2000 new beetle with one key, the key i got when i bought the car was in pieces and became unusable shortly after. i put the chip from my NB key into an old spare vw transporter key fob i had laying around, it's a different style fob from the new beetle one, the key works on my car but the buttons on the fob don't work. i'm not sure if i just need to sync the fob to my car and therefore need a second key or if it doesn't work because its the wrong style fob.
