    Great reaction, Vin and Sori!! Kath was an amazing guitarist, but on top of that, he had such a soulful /groovy singing voice. I absolutely love early Chicago!

    The song was conceived as a conversation between two young people - one socially conscious, the other totally oblivious to the world around him. As with most things Chicago, context is everything. It was the early 70's the war in Vietnam was raging, and college campuses were hotbeds of protest against the war, poverty and a political system that seemed to ignore the wishes of the younger generation. Chicago got their first exposure on college FM radio stations that liked their socially conscious messages and had no problem playing their extended cuts.

    Chicago has always been one of my favorite bands . Terry Kath was a very under rated guitarist and sadly the band lost its direction after his death.the early days when they were still the Chicago Transit Authority. Imo the music pre 80's was so much better.

    Chicago in full flight could blow virtually anyone off the stage. And the rhythm section (Terry, Peter and Danny) drove this song. Just powerful as a jam in part 2!

    Written by the same guy who wrote 25 or 6 to 4, Robert Lamm, he played the keyboards. This band was really into developing a social conscience. The abrupt end of the song was a protest against censorship. As usual, their live version is usually the best, they really feel their songs. At their concerts they had voter registration booths and anti-war tables. Heard them in 1974, 77 (two concerts before Kath shot himself), 92, 2017. The horns and Lamm were students at Purdue University. and met when they reserved practice rooms at the same time. 3 of them ended up being in the Song Writers Hall of Fame. This song was aimed at people who were :"asleep" during the war. The guitarist, Terry Kath was on his way until tragedy struck. During 77 break, He was at a roadie's house and was playing with his gun, twirling it. He pulled out the clip, showed him the empty clip, took a toke, and said "what do you think I was going to do, shoot myself?' Stuck it against his temple and pulled the trigger. He didn't clear the chamber so there was one left, maybe he was to drunk or high to remember that he didn't clear it. A gun is not a toy. He left behind a wife and daughter.

      January 23, 1978, was the end of the true Chicago as that's the day Terry Kath died. He was set to record a solo album when he died at roadie Don Johnson's home.

    This song illustrates that although we may see things differently than other people, we can still work together with them to bring about positive changes. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ viewpoint in their Dialogue. Both are expressing their own reality. I just love this song.

    Sorry to double dip, but if you want to see a live performance of early Chicago (which I highly recommend). Check out "25 or 6 to 4" at Tanglewood, 1970. Kath's guitar work is amazing, and Peter's vocals are also mesmerizing.

    In Dialogue 2, the audience, the listeners-you and I are part of the “we”. Also in the 1970’.s there was a sense of optimism that we don’t have today. Maybe we are more realistic, but we are certainly more pessimistic.

    Keyboardist Robert Lamm wrote the lyrics to this, and Terry and Peter made it magic with their voices. The thing people DON'T hear when listening to this masterpiece, is Terry's amazing guitar work the last 2 minutes of the music. It's kinda buried under the other instruments and the vocals out front. Next time you hear it, try to single out his guitar!

  • @jhamler1
    @jhamler1 Před rokem

    I kinda forgot how fierce Terry Kath was as a badass guitarist. The lyrics are a bit trite and on the nose but the guitar/drum play is outta this world. Which kinda/maybe the whole point.

    BTW Vin... you're dead on with the reaction understanding the lyrics, except for the end. The repeating chorus at the end is not the 2 of them singing, it's the rest of the band proclaiming!

    Chicago didn't do a lot of political stuff in the music but at times they felt it time to.

    LOVE the song....A message that was strong in the 70's and sadly still and maybe more relevant today. Can't believe you didn't find this an impactful message. Had to dislike it based on your confusing review...

    I believe for the first 3 albums were doubled record albums, lots of experimental tracks. A couple were awful.. "Free Form Guitar" big NO! Fortunately their good stuff was great. They had 3 lead vocalists and amazing guitarist and bassist.
    You got a LOT of work to explore this band! They can be political, love songs and stuff about daily life. 25 or 6 to 4? Is about writers block and not knowing what time it is. It is a real rocker. And "I'm a Man" a marvelous cover of a Steve Winwood song!
    I was in the LA area during the Watts Riot. I was just astounded that people could be so angry that they'd burn their own homes! I was 10 and moved down from an Island in the Northern Washington State and in 1964 we didn't have African Americans on the Island.
    We did have native Americans and some Asian. On my play ground and my neighborhood, we just were kids that's all. We hung out with each other and so forth I got rescued from white bullies, I am white, but I've been predominantly been bullied by white guys until I grew a bit and lost my patience. Then I became a bully sheriff and used my strength and my brains to keep them in line. Finally in high school all 180 pounds of me (5'7) flipped a 6ft plus almost 300lb guy over my shoulder and pinned him to the wrestling matt ( it was a scheduled bout) in front of my whole high school. Suddenly, like light switch. Any thoughts of bullying me at school just vanished! Didn't have be anyone up to prove myself. I prefer peace. Ah well, an old man telling glory days tales. Sigh, sorry about that!

      Free Form Guitar was just Kath messing around on his guitar. Without him even realizing it, their producer heard him and recorded it, then included it in CTA. It was never meant to be released and was not a “song” per se.

    • @daviddragavon7555
      @daviddragavon7555 Před 10 měsíci

      @canovacousins1720 their producer was wrong in the choice to put it on the Album. I say that not to criticize the band. I saw them in 1972 and 73. One of my favorite bands of all.

      @@daviddragavon7555 I completely agree with you. One of the only things I think he did wrong in the first 9 studio albums.
