Rhodes Piano Complete Pickup Replacement

  • Rhodes Pianos starting in late 1979 had very problematic pickups, known as the white tape pickups. In 1979 they were still Red. They have been failing badly for the last 20 years or so, but recently it has become more epidemic. It is not uncommon to see 10 to 50 bad pickups per piano. At this point, there is no valid reason to not replace all pickups. Each pickup is a time bomb waiting to fail, this will cost you down time, frustration and more money than if you just did the full replacement one time and one time only.

    It's all true! I service Rhodes pianos in Australia and these white tape pickups seem to have decided now's the time to go. They're all like "2020 F this we out".

    Oh, I'd love to do this to mine. Hopefully this year, along with the tone bars. Will you guys be selling the set of tone bars again?

    Doesn't look too difficult but how much does a set of pickups cost?

      @pedrofigueiredo1936 Před 3 lety +1

      roughly 10$ each. when summed up a 73 Key becomes a 730$ in pickup repair. not to speak of tines and tonebars

      @@pedrofigueiredo1936 that's quite an expense! I've got the dodgy ones with the white tape and they are all failing one at a time. So far I've been replacing a few at a time but I might just replace the whole lot at some point.

      @@pedrofigueiredo1936 nice! I think I've replaced a total of 20 pickups now over the space of the 15 years I've had mine. Last time I replaced 10 and managed to break an adjacent pickup in the process so I still have a least one dead pickup.

    Honestly a Mk2 rhodes isn't worth what it'd cost to do this job. Everything about Mk2 kinda sucks.

    Doesn’t this take away from the value of the piano it’s not really original at this point!!

      That's only if you are going to keep it original, not play it, and put in a museum.

      No.
      White tape pickups are notoriously bad. It's a very simple pickup to replicate so the modern replacements are as good as any old ones.
