Callas makes this music great, as she did with much of her repertoire, IMO. That's why I find other interpretations so dull by comparison (I believe there are others on here that would agree with me).
Donizetti’s music doesn’t need anyone to make it “great”. It’s already great. And Callas’ voice isn’t to everyone’s taste. To me it’s wobbly and unpleasant.
Donizetti created a masterpiece. Callas and Simionato were very good, but there have been others equally very good. 👍😉

@@titonut1 thanks for your reply. I couldn't agree more with you. I listen to Maria since I was 5 and am turning 42 in a week. There is not a day that goes by that I don't listen to her voice. And it never bores me. ❤

Fantastico cast. Callas sempre di bravura sovrumana. Che suono pulito, Tito! Bellissimo. Il Maestro Gavazzeni tagliava un po' troppo, ma capiva Donizetti, e, in queste recite fu favoloso. Il mio Maestro (R.I.P.) era presente, e mi ha riferito di una serata-shock, che ha costituito un vero e proprio precedente nella storia della Scala e dell'opera italiana.

Anche in Anna Bolsena è lei.Basta sentire il primo giudici ad Anna pieno di sdegno, poi quel giudici incredulo e via via sempre più impaurito. E ‘ formidabile e siccome è quasi impossibile imparare una parte in ogni sfumatura credo che Maria riuscisse a vivere completamente i suoi personaggi.E questo non l’ho sentito in nessuna ne prima né dopo di lei

Titonut1, I so wish I could communicate with you in your native language, but, alas, I am limited to my English. I truly appreciate all that you bring to us. If there was a time machine, I think I would most want to go back in time to be in the audience for all of Maria’s Bolenas. Of course, my dream would be to be there for ALL her performances, but Bolena is magical, to me. It is the most frustrating that no commercial recording was done of this opera. Another opera I wish Maria would have done and recorded is Samson and Delilah........I think she would have been a revelation as Delilah. Again, thank you for all you bring us. From Maria's rendition, i had the idea the Bolena was a fascinating opera, and decided to attend a performance in Rome, a few years ago, with excellent singers- and...surprise! it was the dullest and most boring opera i had ever heard...so, I think it is especially by comparison that one can fully appreciate the unique quality of Maria's interpretation
That's because she could make the mad scene, exciting singing all the written notes, no transposed e flats or changing the key as Sutherland did, making the whole scene way to low for her voice so she could sing a d flat at the end ! Maria lived and breathed this character and sang it correctly with her own interpretation of course .. amazing what a truly first rate singer could do with this role !
