Also, don’t be nervous about not making everything perfectly “American” when it comes to how to cook the Thanksgiving food. There is no such thing. Every family does it different! Everyone has their own recipes. So now your family has YOUR own recipes! You have your own family Thanksgiving collection! 😊👍
Agree! We home make our fried onions and cream of mushroom soup and only use fresh beans, and it would be sacrilege to put cheese on it! They would run you out of the house, lol

The most important thing about Thanksgiving is being grateful for your blessings. The menu is secondary. Whether you are with family and friends, or feeding the homeless, it is a time for reflection and gratefulness. Being blessed for what you have. Looks to me like NZ family and Colorado family embodies the spirit. Being together.

@@mikewrasman5103 Around here, there is always food available for the homeless. They need do nothing but show up. Thanksgiving and Christmas are two days of the year where people donate food, funds, and time specifically to provide something special above and beyond what is normally provided. Easter and Veteran's Day are others.

Hi Guys! I am an American living in the UK and we are having our Thanksgiving tomorrow. My husband works 6 days a week so in order for several of his works friends to experience their first American Thanksgiving we are hosting it tomorrow. I have started the cooking today because the stove here is awfully small!!! We are having Romanians, Poles and an Italian plus my English hubby. I hope mine turns out as well as yours has !!!!! Wish us luck!

It's all about the spirit of the thing! I'm sure it was wonderful. Watching this and reading the comments, I'm a little happy that one thing the US can call attention to is the gathering and feasting in thanksgiving. So...Blessings on our world.
Really hoping it went well. I made a turkey breast, no one likes the dark meat at my house. Sweet potato souffle, mashed potatoes with gravy, hot Nashville salad, ambrosia (My daughter insists, reminds her of grandma), dressing (My personal fav), brioche rolls,, cranberry sauce, pickles and olives, red wine and sparkling cider, pumpkin pie with of course homemade whipped cream and apple pie made with Minnesota grown apples. After saying prayers and before eating we all say one thing we are grateful for, can't say family (that's an easy one and no repeats)
The cool thing about an "american thanksgiving" is the families coming together & sharing their great recipes that they've created so don't worry about not making a dish right or being afraid of adding your own style into it!
I read once, that, except for the food, Thanksgiving is the least commercialized
of the major US holidays. And that's meant as a good thing.

Even though I am single, I still spend a couple of days (YES DAYS) in the kitchen getting things prepped and ready for Thanksgiving: pies, bread, salad - all to take to a family gathering. I'm currently baking 60 dinner rolls for our gathering tomorrow.
gracious, that's what I did for my first meeting the boyfriend's Thanksgiving (17 yrs ago and the tradition continues! tho smaller family get togethers). When he invited me to his family I asked how many people needed a roll. He said there'd be aboouuuut 50 people, all Family!!!! That means, one roll for dinner and one roll for day after Thanksgiving lunch. These are humongous rolls. I had to enlist my son and find every friend's mixer and we baked 150 rolls, not one left over. That was an ordeal! HAPPY THANKSGIVING NZ FAMILY AND to all here!
I spend 3 days prepping! First, I have to get out all the dishes and tableware that will be used. Then I make sure to wash and cut all the veggies, chop the nuts, etc. Pies can be made the day before to free up oven space. I even boil the potatoes the day before so I only need to boil them enough to heat them and then mash them just before dinnertime. You really have to plan what time different dishes go in the oven and on the stove to have everything hot on the table :)
We generally do the same. Unfortunately, the last week (and several tests) have made it quite clear that our most memorable contribution to the family meal this year would be C19-Omicron Variant, so the wife and I will be sitting down for our first Thanksgiving without family/friends in either of our memories. (I've had holidays away in my youth, but the US Navy took great pains to ensure that the days were special.)
That said, the bone-in turkey breast is in the brine and will be going in the oven around noon, I'm still making a (MUCH smaller) batch of sausage/apple stuffing, there is a ham hock waiting to be introduced to the green beans, potatoes await the peeler, and the rolls are rising. The Turkey Noodle Soup from the carcass on Friday and the freezer full of leftovers for future meals are as traditional for us at the meal itself.
We WILL have Thanksgiving, and we WILL be thankful that we have the means, the ability, and the health to enjoy it. I am already thankful that my ability to smell/taste food returned late Tuesday.
I just turned 39 the day before thanksgiving and I spent it in the kitchen with my mother, which I wouldn’t have it any other. Way I have done it for years because I always cook the ham and turkey. She always spends like you a couple days in the kitchen and that’s just for three of us. All my bothers have moved out of state and there families she still keep cooking for a family of about thirty and still doesn’t know how to adjust. It makes for a-lot of frozen leftovers. Which is great for us.
Eh. Don't worry about being single. I am as well and make myself a small amount. My gran and mum refuses me to visit because the thing that can't be spoken of. Starts with a V or a C. I did have a very good spread small enough to eat. I m a male.

This all looks so good! I am a Mexican American, born in Oklahoma. Growing up celebrating Thanksgiving, we combined our heritage with classic Thanksgiving dishes. We made Tamales, refried beans, Spanish Rice, home made tortillas, and all the usual American dishes and sides, Turkey, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, turkey gravy with giblets(chopped turkey gizzards added), sweet potatoes with marshmallows, green beans(never had the GBC as a child). We also had Turkey with mole', a special Mexican sauce, and enchiladas. Desserts were traditional pies, but we also had Peach Cobbler made with peaches from our backyard, and pumpkin and cherry empanadas, a fruit filled hand pie. Sometimes we had a Honey glazed Spiral cut Ham as well.

That was sounding really good, but then you lost me with the gibblet/gizzard gravy. Any of the parts inside a turkey are to always be thrown away (gibblet pack, and turkey neck). Those are gross, and should never be used. :-6

Yeah that's mine too I'm almost 50 and I grew up eating my grandmother's Thanksgiving stuffing and she used to use like the neck me in the giblets and the heart and all that stuff she made it from scratch and I can't find anybody that knows how to make it like that not even anybody in my family I wish I would have paid more attention when I was younger and I used to help her and I never paid that close attention that's one of my biggest regrets she would literally put stuffing aside for me so that nobody else could eat it because I would always take extra stuffing home LOL I miss her

How was this the first time that I noticed how your oven opens? So cool! The food looks amazing and the fun thing about Thanksgiving is that your dishes improve/change over years. The one lady mentioned how they blend their sweet potatoes but honestly, I like the texture of cubed/diced. Each family does their dishes slightly different. Importance is being grateful for being together and eating together as a family.
Definitely agree with you on the sweet potatoes, cubed with a brown sugar sauce and pecans. NO marshmallows! >^..^

The "traditional" Thanksgiving meal is different from region to local communities. I'm from New Mexico and my wife is from West Virginia. We all have different versions and recipes. To add to that, I'm an Native American Indian. We also add our own twist to the Thanksgiving meal... Fried bread, chili stew (both red and green {look up NM chili, especially Christmas}, and we also take from the Mexican culture to include enchiladas.....
Your Thanksgiving meal is what your family deems what you create for your own tradition. Decide on what YOU enjoy and invite your NZ friends to experience the US Thanksgiving!!
My family's tip for cooking the turkey? Cook it upside down, so the juices saturate the breast meat, making it much more moist and tender.

The cool thing about Thanksgiving is the awesome alternatives to "classic dishes". Some people prefer sweet potato pie if its the south, instead of pumpkin. Others also do pumpkin cheesecake instead of pie. Another alternative is sweet potato mashers instead of regular mash potatoes. The thing to remember is every family is different which is part of the fun. There are classic dishes and just the different foods you get to try that guests bring too.
I actually raised my own turkeys for a couple years at my old place. Had a couple dress out at nearly 15kg. 11 hr stuffed in oven. Absolutely delicious.
We raised some large ones a few years ago. The largest one was 55lbs/25kg dressed. It was so large, it could not fit into the oven. Not just in a pan, but could not physically fit into the oven. We ended up smoking it and the 50 or so family members that were over, finished it off. The same year we had 15lb/7kg chickens. We ended calling them "chickenzilla's". Home grown is so tasty! We think it was the goat milk that helped them grow, and grow...
@Ken F Yeah, I could squeeze mine into a large oven - barely. Very moist even after 10-11 hours. No hope of fitting one into a fryer. Smoked sounds nice, tho.

I always keep some turkey or chicken broth simmering and as I cut the slices(especially the white meat), I dip it in the broth before plating it. Also making turkey soup the next day is a tradition. Boil the carcass for a few hours, take the bones out and separate meat, then add veggies like celery, onions and carrots, and rice or egg noodles and spices. Yum
My sister's favorite Thanksgiving was the turkey and rice soup! Mine was white meat turkey on white bread with mayo and kosher dill pickles!
Try making turkey tetrazzini with leftover turkey. It’s so good

We always start off Conversation with ‘what are you most thankful for?’ Everyone at the table has to say what they are thankful for. It’s a lot of fun but it also makes the young people think.
Then you make sure you have teenagers or grandchildren who will wash the dishes!! Lol 😊

I wish to say to you all what a wonderful event this American Thanksgiving dinner fixed by dear friends in New Zealand truly was for all who gathered in thankfulness for our many blessings. In our family it is our custom for us to pray the customary prayer of thanksgiving as we gather around the table with family/dear friends. The favorite part of Thanksgiving for me is the CORNBREAD STUFFINGJ--A SOUTHERN FAVORITE: ALABAMA.
*When I was a young bachelor, Thanksgiving was payday!* I eventually went to scheduling visits to siblings based on how elaborate their spread was and how good they cooked, and bringing my own containers for leftovers... Youngest brother actually did a great breakfast, then oldest brother did well, but had to end with the middle brother who had a spread that wrapped around the kitchen and spilled out to tables down the hallway.
I couldn't cook much back then, but I would bring a store bought pie/cake and whipped cream to the 1st 2 stops (usually pecan or Mississippi mud pie), Kahlua and Irish cream for coffee to the last stop.
Denzie had me laughing out loud with that pillow..good job young man!

This was the first year I ever bought pies. I just didn’t have it in me this year. I am so disappointed in myself. They were good but they weren’t home made.

I was just telling someone that if I could not live in the USA, I would move to your country. Your people and your country are stunning. Thank you for being amazing.
There is a lot of pressure to have Thanksgiving Dinner as perfect as possible. In the end it doesn't really matter if the Turkey is a bit dry or there is lumps in the gravy. It's friends and family that make it special.
Now that's a proper dog! All my life, our various dogs have guarded the oven when there is a turkey cooking in it, and the counter while it's resting!

Awww I love how hard you tried. I just wish you weren't so nervous to "do it right". I think a bunch of people have said this...but there isn't a right way to do it. We all do it differently and we all have a different fave thing that it just wouldn't be the holidays without. For me, it's my mom's stuffing recipe. I remember every thanksgiving waking up to the smell of the celery, onion and sausage cooking. Thanksgiving isn't the same without it! But my kiddo doesn't do stuffing at all. She hates it...but her fave is green bean casserole made from scratch. It's not the holidays without it for her! So we all have something different! Do it your way!!! Make it your own!!

I grew up with this little piece of wisdom my granny gave me. She said, "if the turkey is too dry, that's why there's gravy." To this day i put gravy on my turkey, whether it's dry, or not.....but i prefer ham over turkey.😊❤
I am Irish Canadian and we cook turkey 3 to 4 times of year growing up. I learned a few tips and tricks from my great grandmother in cooking a turkey, so it doesn’t dry out.. one after you clean the bird before seasoning it and putting it on your oven tray, you crack its back, breaking it. You do this because you wish the bird to be on its side instead of on its back as you cook it you would cook it on one side, then flip it over cook it on the other and then finish it off on its back. You do this because turkey breast dries out much quicker than wings and leg wing and leg has the bone which releases lots of juice, keeping it moist. But if you place it on its back, the breast is up taking all of the heat without as much juices. This is why a lot of people are constantly basting to help keep the juice over the turkey, but if you cook it on its side then I took her side and then finish it off on top. You don’t have to constantly base. There is some thing else, my great grandmother used to do. She would make up a seasoned butter. This is where she would take whatever seasons, and herbs she wanted and mix it in with a room temperature butter. She would put it in a little dish and level it off and put it in the freezer to freeze. She would then take the raw turkey and placing her hand between the skin and the breast she would walk her hand through two separate the two doing it slowly and carefully so you don’t rip the skin. Once she had created a pocket she would take out the frozen seasoned butter, cut it into little cubes and push it in Under the skin of the turkey so it’s in direct contact with the breast as it cooked. It would melt giving you an amazing butter, herb infusion of flavour directly in the breast, and the skin would prevent it from losing all of the juices. When you use this technique you baste as well. These were two of the techniques, my great grandmother used when cooking turkeys. My grandmother had another technique to she like to make a really moist stuffing and stuffed. The bird completely all of the moisture in the stuffing, would help keep the bird from drying out. I am an older gentleman nowadays, but I still use my great grandmother’s and grandmothers techniques for cooking turkeys, and I’ve only failed once in my life. That’s because I was very tired fell asleep, and the turkey was on for too long. Can’t fault my great Gran and Gran for that.
The butter tip is something my grandmother used also.

You nailed the most important part of Thanksgiving and that is having friends and/or family over for dinner. The conversation and the laughs and the kids running around getting constantly underfoot are all things that make Thanksgiving super special. The good food is just the cherry on top! Maybe you need to import Thanksgiving so all your friends there in New Zealand can experience it too! Happy belated Thanksgiving from a subscriber in Nashville Tennessee.
In the USA we also have oven baking bags that keep moisture in. You don't have too based the turkey anymore. We put butter under skin and on top , cover with seasons then with help put in bag. Cut 4-5 little holes in top where breast is and bake. Let rest only 15-20 minutes then open bag and carve. When you come too USA look in zip lock bag , foil section for oven bags. Oh and bonus if you guys have crock pots there we have bags for that too. Makes clean up so easy. Love your family and videos🥰🥰🥰

This is so awesome. One of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions is watching the Thanksgiving Day Parade that happens in New York City every year. Also, watching football on Thanksgiving.
I'm from New Mexico, now transplanted in South Florida, but my Thanksgivings haven't changed. Turkey (or Cornesh Hens) and sides, as well as enchiladas, bean & red chile, tortillas, tamales, etc. That's MY American Thanksgiving. 🙂
The most important think you forgot is that everyone at the table takes their turn to say what they are thankful for. Loved the video though. You guys are amazing! ❤️🦃❤️

If you want a moist turkey, roast it in an oven bag and use the skin and fat off a ham wrapped over the turkey to self baste. That's how my dad and I use to do it at christmass (I'm a kiwi). To help set the pecan pie use a bit of cornflour in the mixture, I made one a couple of weeks ago and did this.
I'm in Arkansas U.S. I've never seen a turkey covered like that. Looks good though. Funny commercial! We cook our turkey in a cooking bag that keeps the moisture in. Everything looks great! Us southerners make sweet potato pie also. Green bean casserole...Not Thanksgiving w/o it! We have deviled eggs. Overall, ya'll did great! Don't forget the pies, coffee, then recliner!

I’ve never seen a turkey look much like that, either. We also tuck the wings underneath the bird & tie legs together..looks nicer. I’ve used the oven bags for our turkey for years and love them.
Noon? oh geez, we serve Thanksgiving dinner at Noon. Turkey goes in at 6am. Football starts at Noon. Yes, EST here, I will be up in 10 hours to put our bird on. Sides start at 9, warm serve at 11 or 12. Love you guys Enjoy!
Same! It’s 7am now, and I’m about to head over to my moms to help with all the sides so we can be ready to eat between 12-1. That way there is plenty of time in the day for a nap after.
Every part of the US has their own personal traditions. I always use melted butter and poultry seasoning mixed together and use a meat injectior to make the breast meat very tender, moist and tasty. I then put it in a turkey cooking bag, oil it with olive oil salt and pepper. This way no wasted time basting and they always turn out perfect with no dry meat. I never stuff a turkey the night before. I cut up the onion and celery the night before then stuff it just before putting in the oven. Everything tastes much better with stuffing in the bird.
You take the risk of getting sick if you stuff it the night before.

My American daughter lives in Taupo, and she and her Kiwi partner flew all the way to Texas to have Thanksgiving with us this year. It was fun watching him experience his first Thanksgiving!
Cook the turkey breast side down for 3/4 of baking time. Turn breast up to finish cooking time and crisp/brown the skin. Also soak turkey in a brine with some seasoning overnight. Between both of these will produce a very moist and flavorful turkey. Be sure to have turkey sandwiches the next day (white bread, sliced cold turkey, mayonnaise, salt and pepper).
I was working in Sarajevo, Bosnia back in 2016 and the staff at the Courtyard Marriott had a turkey flown in to make us a Thanksgiving dinner. The chef looked up recipes to figure out what we eat and made them to perfection. Even the turkey was perfect. They weren't asked to do it but they did it as a gift. I asked the manager to allow some staff to join us for dinner so he gave them the day off for the occasion. Great friends can be made over an amazing meal and my wife and I made some life long friends there.

Love these Thanksgiving episodes! Anyone else thinking they should do regional Thanksgiving dishes next year? Like a pumpkin bread pudding or holiday ambrosia salad...
oh... and to get your pecan pie to keep structure, just turn off the oven down to its lowest temperature (150-200F or 65-95C), then place the pie in there and check it every 5-7 minutes with a toothpick. The toothpick should come out nearly clean. ✌ It's tricky to get the moisture out of this type of pie because you're dealing with molasses...so "low and slow" helps with the moisture evaporation

We moved to Spain a couple of years ago and brought Thanksgiving with us. We now share it with our European friends...who love it.
Several props! First, Denzel was an absolute star in the advertisement! Next, try an oven bag to get REALLY moist turkey, chicken, ham or roast. I bet mutton would benefit from an oven bag as well!
Sweet potatoes are extremely versatile. You can make chips, baked, pie or the casserole you made.
I make a cranberry relish. One bag of cranberries, one medium green apple, one medium orange. Blend or process. Add sugar or sweetener to taste. One great advantage is that it is best made 1 or 2 days ahead!
Variation on above, same ingredients. Dice the apple and orange. Add to pot over medium flame. Cover with water Cook until the berries swell and begin to pop. Another that gains taste if done a day or so before eating.

For us Thanksgiving means let’s get the whole family together! Because all our kids are raised and raising their own families. This thanksgiving there were a count of 25 so every year or two the umber increases, we now need 2 turkeys! And the girls bring their dishes, it’s lovely. I hope you continue so you can have your grandkids over for thanksgiving.

A lot of work went into that Thanksgiving meal and it looked delish. Neat to celebrate with a family from the states. You were great hosts and I am sure everyones tummy got full, and the gift echange was sweet. Good thing Atlanta was on hand to help along with Denzel pitching in. I'd have been on edge too with that kid running wild during the meal. Maybe it's just a Southern thing to require your children to sit and eat with you at the table, and learn table manners early on, so that everyone can enjoy the meal.

WhileTurkey and stuffing is traditional, the meal can be whatever your family enjoys. The important part is giving thanks for the past year and your life etc.
I am so glad that you have embraced our Thanksgiving tradition. It really is about sharing your favorite foods with your friends and family. { U.S. tradition... everybody at the table is considered family.}
For years my sister's mother-in-law made Ambrosia Salad for Thanksgiving and she knew that I always enjoyed it. She has passed away so now I will carry on the tradition.
Thanksgiving is about being a glutton and enjoying food and company. LOL!
Hopefully next year you can invite some of your local NZ friends and family to spread our tradition.

The most likely reason why the pecan pie was a little on the runny side was that pecan pies like to have a good bit of time to sit and cool off to properly settle. Tip for next time! 👍

Yeah, it's a tricky pie. Overcook it because you're afraid of that jiggle when you remove it from the oven, and you will be eating it with a hammer and chisel. More like brickle
In the north it is Peecan pie but in the south it is more like Pahcon pie
some people start cooking 3 days even 5 days before, hats off to a few hours before. I once had a neighbour that put her turkey in night before left it to cook on low all night and the next day

Yet another well executed thanksgiving dinner/celebration...you are a wonderful family, very wholesome. Thank you for having us, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Don't feel bad about the turkey, it is not uncommon to encounter a dry turkey...there is a cheat though...Cook your turkey in an oven bag, and stuff it with quartered onions and chopped celery...The juicy vegetables will steam the turkey with flavor from the inside out...did this the first time 3 years ago, haven't cooked it another way since, and I've done smoked, deep fried, and standard roasted...the oven bag and veggies is by far the best turkey I ever had. Of coarse I seasoned, and injected my turkey as well.
We also use oven bags and the turkey is always juicy and browned perfectly.

For me the best thing is the stuffing... and stuffing the Turkey... with stuffing... that is the best stuffing ever... but yeah... it's all good. Wonderful dinner! Looks great and delicious... can't wait to get me some tomorrow.

I’ve always been told it is the tryptophan in the turkey that makes you sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner. But it turns out that all the high carb side dishes actually allow the tryptophan to basically travel to your brain instead of just your body.

Great looking Thanksgiving dinner. There is one Thanksgiving dinner that stands out with my family. I was in my mid 20's and a fisherman. I told family I was bringing meat. Traveled the 3 hour drive to parents house. As all of the family showed up I told my parents I was doing fresh caught salmon and crab. We had an extended season. My dad and I stood in a blizzard in 10 degree weather bbqing the 6 filets I brought. Dinner was a hit. That was 30 years ago and I still get family asking when are we having salmon and crab for Thankgiving again.
This was awesome. Visually, this reminded me of my grandmother's Thanksgiving day spread. I think you guys nailed it.
IMO I think all people should have some form of Thanksgiving holiday. To thank their God, the Universe... even their parents, whoever. BUT we've all got SOMETHING to be grateful for.
What a great celebration. As someone else said the menu is secondary. This is an occasion to be thankful for what is good in life. The menu varies according to family traditions and what is available. Please note: The U. S. Thanksgiving day started with a proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, He set it on the last Thursday in November. Later it became the fourth Thursday. I believe that the Canadian Thanksgiving occurs in October. Thank you for sharing.
Our family tries to change things up frequently.
This year we had a lot of people so we did three different meats. We had a roast beef, a honey baked ham, and a small turkey. When we do turkey we do a treatment called brining. It helps the turkey stay super moist, without basting.
We also had whipped potatoes and turkey gravy, sausage dressing, roasted root vegetables, a green pear salad, and homemade Sally Loone bread and cranberry sauce.
For dessert we had a choice of four pies, blueberry, apple, pumpkin and pecan. I change up the fruit pies each year, or make a chocolate cream pie.
There is no right or wrong way. The point is to give thanks for our blessings.
