In 1983 when I saw this, the entire theater audience spontaneously stood up en masse with a standing ovation at the end of the film. Only time I've ever seen this happen, for any film.

The Mercury program was a lot like I heard war being described. 99% boredom, 1% terror. I was in Jr. high sitting in class watching a rocket sit on the pad with vapor leaking from it for hours and hours on hold, before anything happened. Those poor guys. When asked about what he was thinking about while sitting up there waiting, one replied "The fact that all the parts of this thing were made by the lowest bidder. "

Gus Grissom ,Fred Ward was the second American astronaut during the Mercury Project flights, and one of the first three victims of the US space race, along with Edward White and Roger Chaffee in the Apollo 1 fire. Among his achievements is being the First astronaut to fly two missions, as well as be the first man to fly twice beyond the accepted limit of space in a space capsule. I was born in the early 90's but grew up on these gems and a few others from before then such as It's a Mad, mad, mad, mad world, 2001, and the first two Godfather's to name a few. I really wish we could get back to that quality of cinematography, I feel like especially after the 90's good movies are few and far between.

The date wasn't highly celebrated, because it actually took many years for anyone to acknowledge the date. It remained classified until really the point when the military couldn't keep a lid on it anymore. By the time supersonic aircraft became widely produced within the next decade, there was really no way to keep it secret, then. But, on the day of the record, not many outside of the citizens of Antelope Valley, California knew much about what had happened.

You notice how Conti’s Oscar winning music is never heard? He was brought in late and rushed to finish it. Bet they cut this preview before the music was ready.

Must have. One thing's for sure, it's the musical score that really makes this movie stand out. The poor trailer is proof of that.

I can’t believe this is an 80s movie. Always thought early 90s. It just doesn’t look 80s camera wise. And the actors . I always thought those guys were younger.
