  • I spent a good week just figuring out in my head the projects, videos and activities I'd like to do in the coming month. And it can be sooo tempting to go the flashy route, change all my regular routines, buy new stuff, new materials. I didn't talk about it in this vlog but this time of year can cause a lot of unnecessary wanting. comparison with people on different paths. unintentional goals made up from looking at other's social media accounts... yeah. It can make any good progress feel like nothing. But I got over the hump, I'm excited for my next painting and I do have some other fun work and experiences I'd like to share with you before the end of the year, that are rooted in my own taste and journey, not just what seems popular. If you actually read these descriptions and have any ideas for December vlogs you want to see, let me know. I'm hoping to make more videos than usual for you. :)
    But anyways, I hope you enjoy this vlog as I got the ball rolling again. It really is a process, but worth it to have something on the easle again. when there's a painting on deck I feel a lot more focused and engaged in my dad to day life. plus I snuck in a little trip home for Thanksgiving which also lifted my mood.

    Hi Maria, looking forward to see how you transform the everyday Starbucks into a beautiful space of wonder. It is interesting seeing you doing the value and colour studies - also that you write down your reflections on your artwork...I think that is a interesting and valuable practice.
    I hope you had a great time with your family - it looked like so much fun seeing you all playing games and full with laughter! What game where you guys playing? The cards kindof remind me of Uno.
    Hope you are keeping well.🙂

      I'm looking forward to it too, feels like a good one. I like to do some different practices like that so by the time I'm painting I have some direction and maybe a concept visually that goes beyond the photo. And I had a great time with family, they really pull me out of my shell, I love it. At the table we were playing Phase 10, it's a favorite of ours!
      Hope you are well also Irene :)

    • @curiouslittlefrog
      @curiouslittlefrog Před 7 měsíci +1

      I sometimes give random ideas for future content, and I must say I would love to see a Q and A! Where you answer questions about your CZcams channel (what camera, editing, routine maybe), about your art supplies (how you pick them, where you get them from, brands), future goals with the channel and with art. Maybe as like a 2024 new year overview or like summary of 2023 or something?? Also still would LOVE to see a Live painting session sometime so we can all paint together!!

      @mariasisul  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Ha! She did drop a video, and I'm ready for this next season too! Each painting feels like a new adventure. And I always enjoy hearing those content ideas, even if I'm slow to implement 😂 would love to do a q & a or yearly wrap up of sorts. Still playing with the longer video/paint with me idea. Probably wouldn't be live but I could make it chatty for sure :)

    Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for sharing your artistic process with us. I always enjoy learning how each artist approaches painting a new piece from the brainstorming stage to the final painting stage. Your process is a little similar to mine in that I also use colored pencils in my sketchbook for color studies. I read recently that the French painter Bouguereau's process included multiple detailed head studies of the human subject in oils, detailed studies of any foliage and drapery that will appear in the final piece as well as detailed studies of the hands and feet of the subject. Quite labor intensive, but then it certainly paid off. Cheers.

    • @mariasisul
      @mariasisul  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Can't go wrong with a colored pencil sketch, it stirs up some ideas that I wouldn't usually get just from a painted sketch. Thank you for sharing about Bouguereau's process. That's amazing, I would love to do even more studies of that nature sometime. Foliage especially is so difficult I can imagine why he'd spend extra time dissecting it!
      Best wishes to you! :)

    Watching other social media accounts can indeed throw you off balance(I hear you 😉) but great you got on with your own desires and yes an easel with a new project on is very stimulating . I so love your approach of the smaller studies in your sketchbook , maybe you can go into depth of this in one of your next video's , also interesting you combine the use of different mediums in he same sketch . Your thoughts/ideas for new projects do they come after you made reference photos or do you make the photos after you brainstormed what topics you want to paint? I loved when you said you don't want the 'hurry' feeling when you are working on something , that really is awesome . I wondered if there is a particular reason you work on wooden panels , It just crossed my mind about weight/shipping cost ... Ohhh and I am so happy to read you will treat us with more video's , 👏and good luck with the progress of the contest ! 🍀 ps Cute dogs too to keep you company .

      Tons of great questions in your comment! I'll do my best to answer here. The mixed media sketches are born out of my time doing design work. I just got used to using every marker, pencil or material available to render something. Plus each tool has it's own strengths, that can help to push and pull my expectations and ideas around layering colors or making marks. Those insights usually come after the finishing the sketch as I analyze it but it's always very useful to me. I have a constant internal stream of ideas around my current subject matter/topics and just capture photos on any day that fit the bill or strike me as unique. Then I sit down with the best ones and get more selective based on composition, impact, how authentic it feels to my message or values. Most of the time I only end up with one reference left that has 90% of what I need and then I run with that. But for fun sketches, small pieces, or plein air, it's different and I might get excited about a material, or scale of a project first then curate some references. I'm less picky in those cases, because they feel more like experiments to me. Wood panels are my favorite because of how I paint in fairly thin layers, I can create more subtlety and I find that it reflects light back through the paint in a way. Also works well for when I use a t-square in my underdrawings. Plus I just like the crisp corners and feel, and that adds to the similar quality in the things I like to paint. And thank you :) the dogs have been good company for sure 😂
