  • Things haven't exactly gone my way over the last two weeks. But a couple weeks in the grand scheme of things is not too important and I'm happy to just be working on what I love, making a little more progress each day. I had a lot to think about recently and wanted to share with you a bit about my art journey and progress over the last two years. From my experience, you can never imagine at the beginning where your path my go if you continue on it. And little steps forward make all the difference. I also went through the basics of how I lay out my underdrawings with rulers. If your interested in that technique hopefully it was useful. I personal enjoy it but there are many ways to get the job done, do what works best for you. In art and in daily life.
    Stay inspired,
    Maria

    Really loved your process! Like a carpenter…measure twice and cut once! I see so many artists that rely on tracing their images (not a dig….just that drawing is such an important fundamental.) I understand the need to speed things up since time is money, but if you have the luxury of time to ‘get it right’ then take it! Since I primarily paint watercolor portraits, the drawing is the key. Often times the drawing process takes 30-40 hours alone before finally transferring it the paper. I use a ruler of mm’s, compass, pencil, skewers, relative measurements and angles etc. to check my freehand work. The other benefit is that I always have the underlying drawing available to re-do it or try it in pastel pencils. Keep at it!

    Thank you for sharing your artistic journey with us. One of the many things I like about art is that there are as many different artistic journeys as there are people; each walks a unique path in the practice of their craft.

    The discussion on how you came to find your personal direction in art was fascinating! We should all spend as much time and effort in self-reflection and trying to understand what makes us an artist; how we wish this whole thing to unfold to bring forth the most fruit. You've given us lots to think about. Thank you.

    When I watched your video early this morning you turned a smile on my face . Thank you for explaining so thoroughly about the underpainting /drawing method and your personal view . I appreciate you put in so much time and energy , I really felt heard 👂🙏 I became a painter after I finished art school in Stage - and hHistorical costume design and for this I used also the ruler method to enlarge historical costume patterns who were only published in old books in a very tiny scale . To design for stage we needed to learn to draw to visualizing our ideas and so I came into life drawing studies and portraiture and the next step and before I knew I was into painting ... so indeed you never know in advance where your path is leading you but that makes life exiting , isn't it? , and yes with ups and downs . I now use the grid or life /eye size method , it is time consuming but for me this way of 'detailed' underdrawing gives me value and fulfillment and I love details , these days everything seems to be need to go 'fast' but for me I want to feel FREE and do everything on my own pace as In my opinion that s what last the longest without burning out yourself , so I loved when you said 'my self imposed deadline' 😉. I heard you saying how "easy" it is to be influenced by others who's work you/I/we admire but in the end sticking to our authentic self is a sign of strength the hard way maybe but the most important , believe in yourself and keep on going (I tell myself too 😉). Again Thank you !!

      I really enjoyed reading your comment and hearing more of your perspective Debora. That is such an interesting path to art you've had also. Studying design leaves an impact on people it seems like, we all decide to design our own creations in the end. 😂 It does make life exciting, and rich and unique. I totally understand the desire for freedom over fastness. If we are blessed to find something we enjoy giving our time and attention to, then by all means we have to give in. Art can teach us a lot about life it seems. 😊 keep taking your time, all the time you can get 💫

    • @mariasisul

      Try lettering brushes, something with a longer set of bristles. That helps. Sometimes I hold up a piece of cardstock or heavy paper as a guide to follow for delicate lines.

    Hi, I love your art and subject matter, excellent.
    Can I offer a suggestion to cut your under drawing time down,
    break your canvas size down into a4 sections, 1 to 8 say, print off each section, then overdraw each print in it's section ONTOP of carbon copy paper, you'll get your time down to a morning,
    some will say cheating, I call it accurousy.

    • @mariasisul
      @mariasisul  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Sure, I'll try to speak a bit about it in a video when I can. Mostly I edit and compose my references in photoshop. Then I open the image in procreate on my iPad while painting to zoom in and out, checks hues and values while I make decisions, etc. But I like to have printed references as well. When you color pick in photoshop or procreate you can see more info about a color, this can be helpful for mixing if it's the approach you want to take.
