To keep doing what is right, we are designed to run on God's spirit. Yes, God is the God of the Christians. The purpose of creation was for God to enjoy the particular pleasure of ever-increasing love. Within the trinity, the love is perfect, and therefore never increasing. God is love, and God therefore needs nothing more. He did not create us out of any sense of need, or He would not be God. He created us out of desire. For his good PLEASURE we are, and were created. The more we know Him, the more we love Him, and we will spend eternity getting to know Him more, and there will always be more to get to know. Hence, ever increasing love. But, He loves us with perfect love, so we get to taste that, too.
I’m 39, father of 2 and after a very beautiful 10 years 27-37, I have found myself in a tough spot. I didn’t think it was possible. I’d never given any sincere thought or respect towards religion or what is moral other then cuz I said so….. Struggle def made me look for help and though I’m not sure where I’m going this feels right.

I appreciate everyone’s support. I hadn’t noticed till know. Im learning and getting support from some unexpected places. My neighbour for the last 9 years is Christian and while we have always had a great relationship, they were religious and I wasn’t. Being ignorant in this area I decided to reach out and they’re committed to helping me learn. I have had so many unexpected positive conversations about my confused new outlook. It is remarkable how many people are also feeling this.

I truly hope those who complain about this reading, realize they are missing the point of the book. Listen again and work hard to take your wants out, and ask God to help you grow in your walk with Jesus. Actually, psychoanalysis is diametrically opposed to Christianity. It replaces the salvation of sinful souls with the cure of sick minds. We are not sick men in need of a cure. We are dead men in need of life.

@wesbleess1586 Both God and Christ want that treatment to be appropriate and helpful. If you know anything about the history of mental health treatment given to those in the most dire need you will know that it’s often not appropriate or helpful. I’ve advocated for men who are held in metal health wards and facilities, the “care” they are given is often neglect and abuse. Many (I’d dare say most) doctors have no faith, they cannot heal these people so they drug them enough to mask their symptoms or in to a stupor and lead them to live in the flesh while training them to get along in the world. Believers are supposed to be set apart from the world and worldly doctors can never teach a believer how to cope with the world hating them.

What does the part at the end mean where he mentions that we can only have a self when we give our self to Christ and that this is why Saints are all different? Would they not be the same if all are Christ or is it Christ acting through us, as he wants us to be? He also talks about how humans are unique but essential to the whole like the parts of a tree but about humans are unique considering God dwells in all of us? Thank you :)
He talks about that in The Screwtape Letters. He says it is one of the greatest paradoxes. God wants you to be like him, because he values your individuality. The only way you can truly ever be yourself is to give it to God.
😮 I hear "the teaching of man in schools is man opposed to God's Holy Book. (about the planets-that is NO WHERE in that Book- read the creation model in Genesis 1). I disagree. There is only one BEGOTTON son of God. In Job, we read of a time when the sons of God presented themselves in heaven, and satan was among them.
I'm an hour and fifty minutes in and he makes many points based on untruths, states things axiomatically without cause, disregards other perspectives out of personal incredulity, and doesn't address other explainations which do not require a god. So far I find this unconvincing in the extreme. He's a good writer, but maybe not so good an apologist, the friend who reccomended this book to me made a better case than Mr. Lewis has.
This has so many equivocations and non sequiturs it's more exhaustingly presumptuous than illuminating. He doesn't understand other religions, nor does he account for why his God made suffering, death, and even evil, and allows it all to persist. And none of these great thinkers can explain why "Free Will" is such a great good that it warrants a system with infinite suffering (i.e. Hell). How can infinite suffering ever have a positive tradeoff that is greater than infinity? That doesn't make any sense. Why would it be good to create anything besides Heaven? How is it good for a perfect being to make anything worse than itself? The tradition has no reasonable answers for these.

God intended for humans before the foundations of the earth to be holy and blameless. Humans were given an act of responsibility to be holy and blameless in their personal decisions. The act of evil is simply put, as an act of self that dismays God’s order and design. We see this as God instructed Adam and Eve not to do something when he told them not to eat from the knowledge of good and evil and even a punishment of their actions. Rather, they in their responsibility decided to disobey God for their own gratification. This was the only moral choice at the moment for mankind at this point and they disobeyed God, leading to a cursed world full of suffering and evil. God continued to make amends even when their state would not nor could not stand any where near God’s holiness when he sent his prophets and apostles to be the foundation of His order and design of grace. Again, God calls man to come back to God and be brought back to the Eden state but man simply rejects God’s authority. Which is evil itself!

When your creator was drawing up the blueprints for the Garden of Eden, to use your example, did he have the power of prophecy and the divine knowledge and wisdom enough to know how things would turn out? Did he know what would happen? And my broader question is the same even if you think the pre-Abraham stuff in Genesis are folktales or spiritual metaphors or whatever.
C.S. Served in combat in The Great War. He was wounded, people around him were killed. According to Christians I talk with, the Just god had Hell in store for Lewis, if he died heroically. Strange ideas, about right, and wrong.

I am not saying Marine Corps chaplains don’t exist but as a former FMF Corpsman for 13.5 years every chaplains assistant I knew was a Navy RP. Not only do I have a BA in theology but not is from Southwestern Adventist University so I am quite versed in Adventist apologetics as well as I used to advocate for them. Please tell me more about how my “foundation is insufficient” though. Let my guess my “heart wasn’t in the right place or open”, or I was never really a believer. Something to that extent right?

My Theology and background was more than sufficient that my skills and talents were leveraged by the Navy to detach me from my normal duties. However, since you wonder how your background is insufficient, CS Lewis points out the natural urge for humans to find God; we now know this as religiosity, and it is genetic.... it has nothing to do with your heart... hilarious self-own. I'm no supporter of Cs lewis, and I make fun of it in my sermon that's uploaded, but to deny his profound reasoning and relational examples suggest there's something deeply, personally off about your perception. Southwestern? Do you mean Southern Adventist University in Tennessee?
The argumentation behind that there is a sapient force behind the moral law is nowhere near objective, for it takes for granted that there is an opposition of matter and mind. Moreover, the very moral law described here seems to follow strictly European morals - we all know we should behave decently and we have an intuiton what it means - though in other cultures our measures of decency wouldn't work. And there Lewis states, that in order to believe that there are better and worse systems of morality, we need to accept the very system of morality we follow as the objective one (which he later equates to the Christian moral system). This is not an objective argument, for this works only for Europeans! Hindu people would say we need to live according to Dharma, and Dharmic moral system is different from European-Christian one. It would still condemn Nazi morality, though - so how do we know which one is closer to the objective moral law? If I find the answer in the following text, I'll add to this comment in a reply.
The argumentation against life force is absolutely unconvincing for me, because Lewis only blames it for wishful thinking, not taking into consideration all the depth of this thought. And as for the example of going forward by taking a step back - this only works when we KNOW what is our purpose, so we know what we should be aiming at. If we're indeed looking for truth, we cannot assume it is this or another in advance. And the argumentation that the being behind the creation of universe is intensely interested in right conduct is worthless, because it is based only on an example from human life, which is inferior to this, so he is surpassing his previous limits here.
Pantheist views do not necessarily take the good-bad distinction seriously. They just confirm that human view is imperfect, thus we shouldn't impose it on the whole world, for the world is something superior to us. The argument based on clear moral distinction between good and evil is intrinsically human, therefore not objective. This does not mean that this distinction is not real or important - nowhere near that! It is crucially important for us, humans; and is very real in our social reality. But if we take humans out from the universe, would the natural laws change? No. Would there be the good-bad distinction? Also no! Hence, the morality is indeed real and very important, but not objective (instead, intersubjective). Moreover, this distinction does not need to be dualistically 0-1, yes or no (this hidden assumption of Lewis is quite annoying). God could be really good, and still be inseparate with the universe, because we do not know everything about the universe. If God's will, or core, or anything that is more important than our material piece of reality, is above our cognitive abilities (which seems to be a plausible assumption, if God is superior to humanity), then why would we be sure that his view on morality is exactly the same as ours, and must be purely good? Why do we impose Him to be perfect in our own terms of perfection? This way the whole talk about pantheism turns out to contain no argument against it, and just show the differences between it and Christianity. Which is a pity, because I find pantheism really convincing and I would truly like to find any plausible challenge to it in the Christianity.
The world is unjust, that's true. But this doesn't mean that the idea of justice must come from outside of it. Justice is not a private idea of yourself (whatever pleases your fancy), but an effect of your human needs to which you must obey. This is yet another of the instincts (social/moral). You're in such violent reaction against this unjustice because it gives you the motivation to oppose it. And this could be the will of imperfect God being the universe itself, couldn't it? If you didn't impose God to be the embodiment of your idea of perfection, you could believe in God that transcends it, but still contains the whole reality with its good and evil (or rather: what we perceive as such) alike, though preferring the former. You do not have to believe in God opposite to the Universe to believe he is good. In short, if you abandon dualistic simplifications, this part of argumentation turns worthless. And that's a pity, especially since the very next paragraph deals with dualistic oversimplification (previously acceding it to fight the opposite stand).
Lewis states that he cannot imagine a world in which free will would exist alongside with no possibility of evil. But it does not prove anything. After all, your imagination is limited to the concepts it operates within. God should not obedient to these concepts. What you see as good or evil is not necessarily the objective good or evil! The free will itself is a very problematic concept and quite a bold assumption, when you consider it. But even leaving this matter apart does not help with theodicea. The argumentation here can be summed up into something like this: there is evil in this world, but God (let me remind, He is supreme goodness) was sure the free will was absolutely worth it. This doesn't help with the bad things that happen to us without human decision, i.e. natural disasters or fatal diseases. The classical Leibnizian argument is as follows: God created the best world possible and it is not up to us to state that He could have done better. And my answer is: well, if so, it means that there is some frame of logic (of possibilities of being) to which He must have obeyed. If this was the best world possible for God to create, and yet we can think of a world that lacks at least all the natural disasters - then there must be some limit to His creative power, so He wouldn't be omnipotent. Of course, you might say "You just can't understand this, it is His problem, not ours - in some very refined sense He did create the best universe and all this evil must have been necessary - leave it for Him, it's His business". But it is our human business that we suffer. Whether God suffers we cannot know for sure, but if He is the only one responsible for the current state of affairs (and if He is the only source of creation and no alien, independent force was involved in the process, all the suffering and evil can be traced back to Him), He indeed cannot be regarded as purely good. As a perfectly good being, how could He have created Angels with free will that are capable of wishing to do evil? Couldn't He have granted them with His consciousness of good and bad? If He did, they wouldn't have rejected His will (even if they could have). How could a perfect being create an imperfect world? Where would that "im-" come from? Lewis doesn't answer that and I never encountered any plausible Christian explanation to this problem.

The purpose of creation was for God to enjoy the particular pleasure of ever-increasing love. Within the trinity, the love is perfect, and therefore never increasing. God is love, and God therefore needs nothing more. He did not create us out of any sense of need, or He would not be God. He created us out of desire. For his good PLEASURE we are, and were created.
The more we know Him, the more we love Him, and we will spend eternity getting to know Him more, and there will always be more to get to know. Hence, ever increasing love. But, He loves us with perfect love, so we get to taste that, too.

Actually, psychoanalysis is diametrically opposed to Christianity. It replaces the salvation of sinful souls with the cure of sick minds. We are not sick men in need of a cure. We are dead men in need of life.
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” Who can know they need a doctor unless the examine themselves and admit they need the cure. And also in accepting the cure, partaking in that cure.
God nor Christ would not want people with poor mental health to be deprived of medical treatment for their mental health anymore than medical treatment for any other illness.

@wesbleess1586 Both God and Christ want that treatment to be appropriate and helpful. If you know anything about the history of mental health treatment given to those in the most dire need you will know that it’s often not appropriate or helpful. I’ve advocated for men who are held in metal health wards and facilities, the “care” they are given is often neglect and abuse. Many (I’d dare say most) doctors have no faith, they cannot heal these people so they drug them enough to mask their symptoms or in to a stupor and lead them to live in the flesh while training them to get along in the world. Believers are supposed to be set apart from the world and worldly doctors can never teach a believer how to cope with the world hating them.

He talks about that in The Screwtape Letters. He says it is one of the greatest paradoxes. God wants you to be like him, because he values your individuality. The only way you can truly ever be yourself is to give it to God.

I disagree. There is only one BEGOTTON son of God. In Job, we read of a time when the sons of God presented themselves in heaven, and satan was among them.
Satan is created along with all the other sons of God (watchers, angelic beings,ect.) but the Triune God is the creator.
I'm an hour and fifty minutes in and he makes many points based on untruths, states things axiomatically without cause, disregards other perspectives out of personal incredulity, and doesn't address other explainations which do not require a god.
So far I find this unconvincing in the extreme.
He's a good writer, but maybe not so good an apologist, the friend who reccomended this book to me made a better case than Mr. Lewis has.

This has so many equivocations and non sequiturs it's more exhaustingly presumptuous than illuminating. He doesn't understand other religions, nor does he account for why his God made suffering, death, and even evil, and allows it all to persist. And none of these great thinkers can explain why "Free Will" is such a great good that it warrants a system with infinite suffering (i.e. Hell). How can infinite suffering ever have a positive tradeoff that is greater than infinity? That doesn't make any sense. Why would it be good to create anything besides Heaven? How is it good for a perfect being to make anything worse than itself? The tradition has no reasonable answers for these.
God don’t create sin, sin is simply the lack of good in a means opposite God’s will and design. God did do something about evil, his Son’s crucifixion

God intended for humans before the foundations of the earth to be holy and blameless. Humans were given an act of responsibility to be holy and blameless in their personal decisions. The act of evil is simply put, as an act of self that dismays God’s order and design. We see this as God instructed Adam and Eve not to do something when he told them not to eat from the knowledge of good and evil and even a punishment of their actions. Rather, they in their responsibility decided to disobey God for their own gratification. This was the only moral choice at the moment for mankind at this point and they disobeyed God, leading to a cursed world full of suffering and evil. God continued to make amends even when their state would not nor could not stand any where near God’s holiness when he sent his prophets and apostles to be the foundation of His order and design of grace. Again, God calls man to come back to God and be brought back to the Eden state but man simply rejects God’s authority. Which is evil itself!

I am not saying Marine Corps chaplains don’t exist but as a former FMF Corpsman for 13.5 years every chaplains assistant I knew was a Navy RP. Not only do I have a BA in theology but not is from Southwestern Adventist University so I am quite versed in Adventist apologetics as well as I used to advocate for them. @jasonaltig985 correct, I dealt with tactical air operations, and was detached for a temporary duty as a chaplain's assistant. My Theology and background was more than sufficient that my skills and talents were leveraged by the Navy to detach me from my normal duties. However, since you wonder how your background is insufficient, CS Lewis points out the natural urge for humans to find God; we now know this as religiosity, and it is genetic.... it has nothing to do with your heart... hilarious self-own. I'm no supporter of Cs lewis, and I make fun of it in my sermon that's uploaded, but to deny his profound reasoning and relational examples suggest there's something deeply, personally off about your perception. Southwestern? Do you mean Southern Adventist University in Tennessee?
The argumentation behind that there is a sapient force behind the moral law is nowhere near objective, for it takes for granted that there is an opposition of matter and mind. Moreover, the very moral law described here seems to follow strictly European morals - we all know we should behave decently and we have an intuiton what it means - though in other cultures our measures of decency wouldn't work. And there Lewis states, that in order to believe that there are better and worse systems of morality, we need to accept the very system of morality we follow as the objective one (which he later equates to the Christian moral system). This is not an objective argument, for this works only for Europeans! Hindu people would say we need to live according to Dharma, and Dharmic moral system is different from European-Christian one. It would still condemn Nazi morality, though - so how do we know which one is closer to the objective moral law? If I find the answer in the following text, I'll add to this comment in a reply.
The argumentation against life force is absolutely unconvincing for me, because Lewis only blames it for wishful thinking, not taking into consideration all the depth of this thought. And as for the example of going forward by taking a step back - this only works when we KNOW what is our purpose, so we know what we should be aiming at. If we're indeed looking for truth, we cannot assume it is this or another in advance. And the argumentation that the being behind the creation of universe is intensely interested in right conduct is worthless, because it is based only on an example from human life, which is inferior to this, so he is surpassing his previous limits here.
Pantheist views do not necessarily take the good-bad distinction seriously. They just confirm that human view is imperfect, thus we shouldn't impose it on the whole world, for the world is something superior to us. The argument based on clear moral distinction between good and evil is intrinsically human, therefore not objective. This does not mean that this distinction is not real or important - nowhere near that! It is crucially important for us, humans; and is very real in our social reality. But if we take humans out from the universe, would the natural laws change? No. Would there be the good-bad distinction? Also no! Hence, the morality is indeed real and very important, but not objective (instead, intersubjective). Moreover, this distinction does not need to be dualistically 0-1, yes or no (this hidden assumption of Lewis is quite annoying). God could be really good, and still be inseparate with the universe, because we do not know everything about the universe. If God's will, or core, or anything that is more important than our material piece of reality, is above our cognitive abilities (which seems to be a plausible assumption, if God is superior to humanity), then why would we be sure that his view on morality is exactly the same as ours, and must be purely good? Why do we impose Him to be perfect in our own terms of perfection? This way the whole talk about pantheism turns out to contain no argument against it, and just show the differences between it and Christianity. Which is a pity, because I find pantheism really convincing and I would truly like to find any plausible challenge to it in the Christianity.
The world is unjust, that's true. But this doesn't mean that the idea of justice must come from outside of it. Justice is not a private idea of yourself (whatever pleases your fancy), but an effect of your human needs to which you must obey. This is yet another of the instincts (social/moral). You're in such violent reaction against this unjustice because it gives you the motivation to oppose it. And this could be the will of imperfect God being the universe itself, couldn't it? If you didn't impose God to be the embodiment of your idea of perfection, you could believe in God that transcends it, but still contains the whole reality with its good and evil (or rather: what we perceive as such) alike, though preferring the former. You do not have to believe in God opposite to the Universe to believe he is good. In short, if you abandon dualistic simplifications, this part of argumentation turns worthless. And that's a pity, especially since the very next paragraph deals with dualistic oversimplification (previously acceding it to fight the opposite stand).
Lewis states that he cannot imagine a world in which free will would exist alongside with no possibility of evil. But it does not prove anything. After all, your imagination is limited to the concepts it operates within. God should not obedient to these concepts. What you see as good or evil is not necessarily the objective good or evil! The free will itself is a very problematic concept and quite a bold assumption, when you consider it. But even leaving this matter apart does not help with theodicea. The argumentation here can be summed up into something like this: there is evil in this world, but God (let me remind, He is supreme goodness) was sure the free will was absolutely worth it. This doesn't help with the bad things that happen to us without human decision, i.e. natural disasters or fatal diseases. The classical Leibnizian argument is as follows: God created the best world possible and it is not up to us to state that He could have done better. And my answer is: well, if so, it means that there is some frame of logic (of possibilities of being) to which He must have obeyed. If this was the best world possible for God to create, and yet we can think of a world that lacks at least all the natural disasters - then there must be some limit to His creative power, so He wouldn't be omnipotent. Of course, you might say "You just can't understand this, it is His problem, not ours - in some very refined sense He did create the best universe and all this evil must have been necessary - leave it for Him, it's His business". But it is our human business that we suffer. Whether God suffers we cannot know for sure, but if He is the only one responsible for the current state of affairs (and if He is the only source of creation and no alien, independent force was involved in the process, all the suffering and evil can be traced back to Him), He indeed cannot be regarded as purely good. As a perfectly good being, how could He have created Angels with free will that are capable of wishing to do evil? Couldn't He have granted them with His consciousness of good and bad? If He did, they wouldn't have rejected His will (even if they could have). How could a perfect being create an imperfect world? Where would that "im-" come from? Lewis doesn't answer that and I never encountered any plausible Christian explanation to this problem.
