How I Convinced Gretsch To Craft My Dream Guitar
$1000 for one MIJ is a steal! That one sure does sound good!
There’s something about an overdriven Gretsch that is just glorious.
CSNY-Ohio
It sounds glorious, almost as good as a champagne sparkle finish one would sound.
Yes! I love my Gretsch semi-hollow through the drive channel of my Marshall combo 😁
One artist comes to mind , Poison Ivy!! She can make a Gretsch wail!!!
I have a full size Gretsch and I love it. I own other guitars, but there is something about a Gretsch that has made me smile since I first saw George Harrison playing a Country Gentleman.
That color choice back front and scratch guard is AWESOME !!!!
Wow. I’ve always loved Gretsch guitars, but this one is just a raving beauty. The black front with that beautiful green-gold back, sides and (especially) pick guard is stunning. I wouldn’t want any other colors on this guitar; subtle and flashy at the same time.
Dang, man. Sounds killer, and THAT FINISH IS TO DIE FOR.
I like the two-tone. The black makes that green hit harder.
Still have my G6112TCB-JR you and I found at NAMM years ago. Also a Japan guitar. Similar to your guitar and still love it.
I think the guitar is killer just like it is. You see the green from a 3/4 profile and it looks great. I don't have 2,600.00 for one but sweet guitar.
That's true. When he turns, it does make the color pop.
From the looks of it, Avocado Gold is the color on the back . Popular appliance color in the 70"s. Also I had a 72 Buick Electra 225 the same color metal flaked Avocado Gold.
color-coded matching outfit you wear, Phil -- it all "goes well". Incidentally, I had TV Jones pickups installed on my new standard Yamaha revstar guitar, and it is eminently playable now! Super'Tron (neck) and TV Jones Classic Plus (bridge). I cannot recommend this enough!!!
Totally diggin' it! My first Gretch was a Bono "RED" signature guitar... very cool double cut semi-hollow... and though I loved it, I gave it to my cousin, Joe... because he loved it so much! And also because I got another... but in that killer orange color that I always wanted... and with a Bigsby! Love how it plays and sounds! That greenish black one is a beauty for sure, though! Unique color! I still haven't done the dice yet... though I've wanted to for a while. Thanks for sharing... cool guitar of the week! 😎🤘🎸🐦
That thing sounds absolutely fantastic. I love the cleans on the lower position and the light distortion.
I’ve never picked up a guitar and played an F# barre chord first 😂
Sounded awesome!!
I have a 5420. All it needed was a roller bridge. Great sounding guitar.
I have a 2004 John Deere 5420 tractor. I probably need to get a Gretsch to match! 😂
@@aardvark77 czcams.com/video/X_vGfzrP3ik/video.htmlsi=7fCKP8YdHh_dNd2M
Not a mullet fan, but I love the subtle in front flashy in back look of this guitar.
This is the guitar that I've been wanting you to make a video about for a couple years! THANK YOU!!! Been wanting one of these for YEARS, but have never seen one in person to give it a proper feel and listen (really looking for acoustic sound). Thanks for this review Phil!
Gorgeous guitar. Worth every penny.
I have a 2002 Gretsch 6120 JR2 ... AND IT'S A FANTASTIC GUITAR !!!
I put a set of Brian Setzer TV-Jones.
Plugged in it sounds exactly like a big 6120, and you have a way more handy guitar (not as big as a standard big Jazz box).
That is a beautiful unique guitar that sounds awesome.
Love the colors!
Great Gitfiddle
That first E with bridge pup and the bigsby just sent me to listening to Strat Cats “Storm the Embassy”
If I ever get a Gretsch, I want that small guy!
That song off their first LP , well the British one, is just incredible.
I really love the 2 colors! Black and that green are awesome!
TV Jones pickups are awesome! I took the factory Broad'trons out of my Gretsch G5655TG and installed a TV Jones classic Filter'tron in the neck position and a TV Jones Power'tron Plus in the bridge position and got the best of both worlds, Classic Gretsch jangly tone for the mellow sounds and AC/DC grunt for the hard rock stuff! It's one of my favorite guitars now!
love the black top and green back and sides
It looks awesome! The green pickguard ties it together!
All the new Gretsch stuff is terrific. Great guitars, great prices.
Yep.great tone!
Really love my two Gretschs and I would buy one of these immediately if they made them in a lefty model...
They did...I have one
He showed the back, and now I only see that green! It’s hypnotic. Fantastic.
That back color is great. It sounds really good.
Love that great Gretsch sound!
I will never surrender my G6112TCB JR . Made in Japan in 2015 it has a Jaguar Tan top with a copper metallic back and sides. It's a limited edition with only 50 released. I have a photo of Eric Clapton sitting in his living room playing one. Get one if you can
I got the Gretsch bug a few years ago. I now have a 5410 'Rat Rod' in matt black, a 5422TG in orange (the G means gold plated hardware, and the orange with the gold looks gorgeous), a 5210 Jet (that's the one with the P90's) in Vintage White, a 6128T-59 (that's a single-cut Jet with the 'mud' switch) in Firebird Red, and a 6199 Billy-Bo (or Jupiter Thunderbird, as Bo Diddley named it when he designed it in 1959), also in Firebird Red.
The first three are Electromatics and are great guitars, the last two cost a lot more than them, but you can feel it - they just ooze class. I think I overdid it a bit, but I love 'em all.
I find the tone switch on my Firebird Jet to be really useful, and more versatile than just a tone pot - because the two capacitors are designed to do one job rather than cover all the bases they seem to do it better - in the 'up' position with the neck or both pickups you can get good jazzy tones (or that 1950's hot, muffled rhythm & blues tone with a touch of drive), in the 'down' position neck or both pickups have that later BB King slightly rolled-off top sound.
The 'up' position isn't that great for the bridge pickup (though with a lot of drive you're in Money For Nothing land) , but put it in the 'down' position and add some drive and it really puts out a great classic rocky tone - think Alright Now and the intro to ELO's Ma-Ma-Ma Belle!
You could swap a more-useful cap onto that 3-way switch's "mud" position? My vintage Hagstrom Swede has a 3-way "mystery switch" that's obviously Gretsch-inspired, but a bit more useful: One position is tone-cut, but the other is a high-pass filter. (This is on a 2-pickup guitar that already has 2 tone pots!)
I've got a powerjet, looks very similar without the F holes. Love it.
I love all my Gretsch's...I've had great luck with everyone I've purchased. I love the dual switches, cool example!
That both looks and sounds beautiful! Jesus… I wish this wasn’t a limited edition model because I have to start socking money away.
That’s a great guitar for Billy Duffy-type stuff. It’s super rock ‘n’ roll, but it’s got that huge, hollow tone.
6:38 didnt expect this sound from Philippe.
C,Am,F.....then waiting for the G to end that motown progression....did expect Phillipe to hit C after F
If I ever bought one of those, that is the only color combo I would get. You’re crazy! That green and black is awesome!
I have the Billy Duffy white falcon and i absolutely love that guitar
So cool! Different. In a good way!
Cool guitar, I really like that body size, It looks similar to my D'Angelic SS1. I really like it better than the old big body arch tops that I played for a long time. Filtertrons are a really useful pickup. The thumbnail fret markers are really useful to the player even if they don't look at traditional.
That thing looks phenomenal! I would definitely get one. I already have a white falcon and a sparkling Jet
There’s also a Falcon jr made in the 90’s… used prices are crazy though
Love everything about this guitar! Unfortunately I don't think they make an import JR hollow body. I've seen a center block, but no hollow body. Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong because I would love to get my hands on one.
Phil, what makes Gretch guitars so expensive.?
I grew up in Mattydale, NY (Syracuse). I was back to visit my parents and one day this guy comes walking down my boyhood home on Florida Rd and this very pleasant man stops and struck up a conversation with me (and I swear it was Joe Carduichi).
Stupid me I got so lost in our talk that I forgot to ask him his name (what a dummy I was for not asking his name).
Phil, should you ever see Joe again, ask him if he was ever in the Syracuse area. If so, Wow.
Thanks Phil,
Gary Bertolo
I have a Gretsch Streamliner that I put a TV Jones in the bridge and it's my favorite guitar.
I love it , my dream Gretsch would be an double anniversary thin body semi hollow green smoke and green Back with a b7 bigsby and tv jones , custom shop of course . And reliced ❤❤❤
I can not find one anyplace on the internet. That sound great.
Love this guitar...sounds just like a fullsize 6120.
The audience will see the green sides, contrasting with the black, more than the player will, and it looks awesome from here.
That’s really nice.
That Gretsch glows!
6:07 I almost thought you were going to break into a Goo Goo Dolls cover! almost identical tone to the one on "Slide"
It totally sounds like an electric guitar!
It needs more green up front, but it's cool.
I'm a sucker for a Gretsch but must admit, I'd prefer the full-sized body model. Still, I recognize the convenience and utility of the Jr. And I think the color is fine though but believe it'd be killer if they flipped the wild green color on the back and put it on the top THEN made the back and sides black. Extra extra points if they'd give it a matching green stinger on the back of the head stock. Sigh... a guy can dream.
Great looking and sounding axe! It would make a perfect “Spaghetti Western “ instrument. I think it would look even better with the black on the back, sides and neck, and the green on the front!
Can you ask them to make an electromatic with dynasonic style pickups next?
I love how you dressed to match the guitar :)
Nice color coordination with the outfit 😂
I want the green gold on the top.
What capacitors does that tone toggle switch between?
And, if you could replace the "mud" one with another, what would you use??
I love the gretsch look and sound personally I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea but I’m a fan I’ve only played a couple of cheaper versions and they were awesome I’m definitely going to own one sooner rather later.
Yours looks awesome Phil
Cool story! There is no sound cooler than a Gretsch through Fender amp with reverb and tremolo. Add a bit of dirt and send me to tone Heaven.
I had a G5655TG in Cadillac Green that had been Plekk'd and put Grover locking tuners on it. With the center block, it minimized the feedback comparatively to other hollowbody Gretsch guitars.
I bought an Indonesian made Gretsch, and it was so good I decided to buy a made in Japan model and it's even better!
Nice score! I have an older Electromatic, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's unique among my other guitars, that's for sure - and that's why I'm keeping it. If someone hasn't tried a Gretsch, they don't get it. But I will say this - you'll either love it or hate it.
That guitar is awesome !!
What is the fretboard made of ? It looks like ebony ?
No tone knob might make it easier to recall sounds while recording.
Back and sides are Metallic Pea, man!
I ordered the boygenius Gretsch. TSA 3/4 sized.
nice dice
@PhilipMcKnight Which variety of bracing is inside ?
😮 that has to be the perfect guitar for country music!
🎶 I think I'm going to go put on my "Cake" playlist
Phil, dressing to match your Gretsch is a plus.
Your outfit matches the guitar too!
It looks like Sage Metallic.
if it was that green gold color all around the body, I would get one.
The back sides look like an older Lamborghini color called Draco Verde
I like it.
Wow that could be the guitar I’ve been looking for but not a fan of the tone control switch.
I got into Gretsch and filtertrons through The Living End.
I pawned a Gretsch once
done ;))
nice guitar
This should have had smaller frets. The bigger frets make the neck feel like an Ibanez.
I'd name her Olive
Cool guitar. Sadly, it looks like they aren't making them anymore. I couldn't find them on Reverb either.
Im not a fan of greeny gold finish! I have a Duo Jet and love it in all black!
Cool, now ask gretsch to reissue the Princess.
the matching clothes helps.
I searched for the Gretsch model you are showing and Sweetwater does not show it?? Where can I buy one?
So are they the same as the broadkaster jnr but different pick ups I guess.
Gretsch has been my choice for many years. There is nothing else like them, IMO. They are too cool.
Headline....Whoops
Be glad they didn't decide to make custon shop version 😂
Hey I know your a p90 guy, have you tied the Dylan talks tone p90s? Just put some in my LP and want to give him some credit, they are as good as all the hype Imo
I prefer the black. 🤣🤣
That guitar is ..G..O..R..G..E..O..U..S..
I bought my Gretsch from the Pro Guitar that Andy used to work for and did all those videos we all love. It's a Red Bill Bo Made in Japan, it was a floor model and they had dropped the price down to around $1200 I think. Cannot beat the sound, master construction.
What is that metallic red and gold guitar on the far left? I LOVE that finish!
Parker... I think maybe a Maxx Fly. Not sure because I haven't really seen a Parker in the wild in a very long time but I think that's which model it is
I Let Gretsch In And It Took Everything
