  • I have recently had the chance to test a fantastic lens from IRIX, their 11mm f4 for full frame cameras, but just how well does it perform?

    Excellent video Dave, I think Irix is one of the rising stars in optics, I have had the 15mm 2.4 since it came out nearly two years ago and it is a fantastic lens on full frame, wonderfully sharp, and contrasty.

    Dave I'm trying to make a decision between this Irix 11mm lens or the Rokinon 14mm FE AF for my Sony full frame system. I would be using this for my real estate work. I love the idea of the super wide 11mm of the Irix (using the Sigma MC-11 on my Sony camera) but the Rokinon keeps pulling me back with it's autofocus. Any thoughts?

    I own the Irix 15mm Blackstone. Using it almost daily to photograph the indoors of a big buildingphoject that had been going on for a year now. I use the viewfinder to focus because my camera requires a focus ajustment on basically all lenses I put on it. There is an interesting port for focus ajustment on the lens, but the information I have about it now is that is done somewere in an Irix factory or service center. In general I am very happy with the lens, it separates object amazingly at very short focus distance ~20cm.

    Another advantage the Irix has over the Laowa is the electrical contacts for aperture control and exif data.
    Great review. Those big lenses perched above your pillow would make me nervous though.

    I have the tamron 15-30 for my real estate and architecture photography along a 24 tilt shift but...Many times 15.8mm (tamron is not 15mm is 15.8) is not enough so i decided to buy the Irix 11mm...I love the look,i love the metal premium build...is a big win for me especially as a nikon user that i dont have many 11mm options...

      @DaveMcKeegan  Před 6 lety +2

      Any recommendations for APS-C lenses!

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  Před 6 lety

      For APS-C I would personally go with Tokina, either 11-16 f2.8 or then newer 11-20 f2.8
      There are some other options like 10-10/10-24mm lenses from most manufacturers but they are all quite slow apertures

    • @MotoRich900
      @MotoRich900 Před 6 lety

      Tokina is indeed an aps-c lens but it works on a full frame too (at least if you avoid 11-14 mm range). Maybe not the best but usefull if you've got one.

      Debating between the more expensive Laowa 10-18 (used), Voigtländer 10 or 12mm (also used but even more expensive) and this Irix one (either firefly or Blackstone. Would be happy with both but Aluminium housing is always great!

    I had the Canon 11-24mm and found this very heavy and too front heavy. After half a year I noticed that mostly used the 11mm. So I sold it and bought the Irix 11mm Firefly. The Quality is about the same and the camera (5D4) lies much better in the hand.
    For using filters I got the R with the adapter with the drop in CPL filter.

  • @tomkershawtoo
    @tomkershawtoo Před 4 lety +1

    Wow totally missed this the first time around but as a 7 year Sony user I am not surprised with the poor results from the Irix used with an adapter on the Sony. Many times I have tried to use really great Ultra Wide angle lens on the Sony A7 series, even my A7R3 with classic Contax and Zeiss UWA glass. But always the result is the same, very poor corner and edge performance with terrible vertical and lateral CA. So it was a shock to try the Irix on my Canon EOS R and find its performance so much better than on the Sony. The CA and vignetting is much milder and easy to correct with LR profile. It turns out that Sony have installed a relatively thick sensor filter stack which requires specific lens design characteristics to mitigate, not my research but Lens Rentals in the US have a good article that details what Sony have done to prevent the use of other manufacturers lens products on their cameras. I guess they (camera manufacturers) want your money when you purchase additional lens which is understandable. So despite Dave's qualifications on the Irix performance, the lens was designed to be used on a Canon body and works really well in that way, much better than on a Sony. I use 15mm Voigtlander UWA on a daily basis with my Sony and it does and amazing job but I am finding the Irix 11mm gives me more wriggle room when shooting inside compact properties, especially the bathroom shots, well done Irix.

    On a complete side note:-
    You were right. The Sony 400mm f2.8GM is a world beater. It does track focus at 20 fps. The A9 is a now pro sports system.
    It has also kind of proved my point that mirrorless cameras need mirrorless lenses (with their different focus motors); and that the problem for Canon and Nikon is not that they can't produce professional mirrorless bodies but that if they do they will have to bring out a new range of 'M' lenses.

    actually.... when you open then Tin to take out the lens.. you will be pulling out the lens case/cover.. then open that to actually pull out the lens.. Irix packaging is second to none.. they really do a great job. I actually have both.. the Blackstone in both 11mm f/4 and the 15mm f/2.4 LOVE them both.... another correction.. there are lens correction profiles for LightRoom.. grab them from the Irix website and install them.

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  Před 6 lety +2

      Because fisheye is not to do with focal length but how it projects the image.
      The Irix projects a flat image whereas a fisheye has a more distorted look of the centre being closer to the camera than the corners.
      Canon do a 15mm fisheye and a 14mm rectilinear

      Irix lenses have had profiles included in Lr and ACR since June 19th. Using the hyperfocal scale correctly on the Irix enables fast and accurate focusing, and the lenses also support focus confirmation. The price is roughly half that of the Sigma 12-24 f/4.

    I don't see the use in such a lens. It has a lot of quality problems almost inherent in doing a lens that wide, especially at a low price point. It's extremely wide, which user of such a lens is not going to have a lot of primes at similar focal lenghts? The price difference for a quality lens in the 10-20mm area is certainly not going to win it for a collection of these B quality primes. I can very easily see why there is not a lot of competition for a lens like this.

    • @ralfjansen9118
      @ralfjansen9118 Před 6 lety +1

      If you do not need such a ultrawide or have higher quality claims, you should not buy it. For that what it is (11mm full frame!) it has great value, and each mm more focal length counts exponentially. Most flaws are easily correctable, and what concerns flares, depending on your personal preferences they could essentially add to the dynamic and action of a scene.
