    Very good discussion -- just two small points I'd add. Yellowing of pages is often a symptom of acidification, and that has two principal ingredients: humidity and chemical properties of the paper itself (often compounds added to enhance printing quality). Also, modern hardcover books are seldom made well enough to withstand the stress on the cover and joint caused by pulling the book from the shelf with your fingers at the top of the spine. For heavy or tightly packed volumes (a no-no also), it's better to push the book out a little from the front edge until it can be grasped along the back.

    All my books have varying degrees of yellowing, but one thing I've noticed in all of them is that the tops of the books are very yellow while the bottom and sides are much less so. I definitely think oxygen exposure plays a role in the books turning yellow. Because when you store your book on a bookcase the bottom is covered and the side is covered. Only the top part and the spine are exposed. I think that's why only the tops of my books are extremely yellow. But I'm not quite sure if this is the only reason.

      @@hellothere_24
      I guess you don't need to replace silica bags frequently it has no expiry date, and also it is not duration based but the amount of moisture, bags get from the atmosphere some larger silica dessicants have moisture indicators, but not all like small bags, packets can be "dried out" when they are full of moisture and reused. Moisture sticks to the outside of silica gel but doesn't get absorbed by the silica gel this means the process reversible. If you can find a way to remove the water from used silica gel beads then they will again begin to adsorb water from the surrounding environment.

    I am a student and don't have a book shelf nor do i have these fancy books...
    I just want to take care of my normal studying material and copies(which are lots of)
    So can i store each group of related notes and books in plastic ziplock bags(of course after cleaning them properly) lying on top of each other in a closed cupboard with no ventilation and no sunlight?
    My main concerns are
    1. Dust getting accumulated on books
    2. Them getting yellowish due to reasons(like idk why the books turn yellow.. Maybe sundamage, humidity and air i.e. oxygen exposure)

    Thanks a ton for the video. My house is being reconstructed and I've got closed book shelves made😑 any suggestions?

      If I had a new bookshelf, I would have closed bookshelf. no, not really but u know... both have pros and cons. Open bookshelves are a cleaning nightmare. So whatever u have go with it and take a few extra steps to ensure papers aren’t spoiled much

      @@IndianBooktuber thank you so much for replying. I'll definitely take proper care but is there anything which specifically needs to be done to help the books keep safely? Have you made any video regarding that?

      @canIdo5 Před 3 lety

      @@IndianBooktuber the candidness and the geometry of the opened book. The opening pages(subject) silently refering to the bunch of books in your background. I'm actually talking about the moment after 2:04 when you blinked down. It's completely coincidental but great.

    Helloo i'm not sue if you will answer me, but the golden letters on my paperback harry potter books are fading away, i almost cant even read them. Do you know what i can do to paint over it? Or at least preserve the rest of them left
    Thank you :)

    • @IndianBooktuber
      @IndianBooktuber  Před 2 lety

      Hey, honestly, I can’t say what’s causing that. Could be the quality of the paperback or some weathering element. Try storing the books away from dust and direct sunlight.
