Bausch+Lomb developed the G-15 tint in the early/mid 30's at the request of the Army for pilots. During that time aircraft were reaching higher altitudes and pilots were experiencing a number of problems due to the increased uv, blue light, and such. The green added to the neutral base worked to control the issues without causing a heavy color shift. I could be wrong but I believe that the lens and the aviator sunglasses were patented in 1936 or so. The trademark RayBan also came into existence around this time.
In the 1950's Bausch+Lomb again working with the military developed their B-15 tint which boosted contrast. I'm lucky enough to have a pair of Aviators that were given to me by a friend who's dad wore them through his service in WW-2.

I got "sunburned eyes" once while frequently wearing wayfarer type sunglasses outside all day while working. They were polarized, gray/black tint. Went to a doc who basically said get a better pair of sunglasses that blocks more light on the sides of your eye, and are stamped/tested to filter out %99+ uva/uvb. Also suggested I try a non polarized lens unless specifically needing to stare into polarized light for long periods (fishing etc...), don't get glasses that are very light or very dark, and if possible get something with a blue/green tint because it will naturally reflect back the higher frequency light. It was said that too dark can be bad in some instances because your pupil will naturally dilate to compensate and in turn, let in more light.
So anyways, I got some blue/green lens, non polarized wrap around style glasses, went back to work, and my bloody looking eyes cleared up. Never have had an issue with it since. I got baby blue eyes, and pretty much have to wear glasses sun up to sun down.

So ironic I found this comment. I bought of a pair of Oakley Frogskins this year. Loved the look and feel of them. But same problem. I’d be out all day long and my eyes just felt burnt and tired. Which is strange because I got polarized Prizm lenses in this so I couldn’t understand why this was happening. Until I finally put my glasses on for a drive and the sun was on the left side of my car and I finally realized how much of a gap between my frame and my eyes there was. I bought a pair of Flak Jacket 2.0 XL’s and BAM…….problem immediately vanished.

I am looking for new (prescription) sunglasses. In basic I want to use them for everyday use like driving but I also would like them to be suitable for sports like mountainbiking. I have a pair of POC sportsglasses with inserts but if I am able to use my ‘standard’ sunglasses for mountainbiking that would be nice. I have my eye on a pair of Holbrooks. Which (Prizm/Polarized/non-polarized) would you recommend to be best. I don’t really like dark glasses so I don’t have to switch glasses all the time while driving and the sun comes out and disappears all the time.

I've got 2 grey, 2 bronze, and 1 rose based lens sunglasses. There's a time and place for all of them. For driving through the mountains I prefer my grey based lens, for driving around the city I prefer my bronze based lenses, for being at the beach or maybe just going for a little hike somewhere, love my rose based lens. But really I could use them all in any of those scenarios. One thing I have noticed though, if it's overcast but still bright enough for shades, I can't see all that great with bronze or rose based lenses. For some reason I can see quite well with grey based lenses when it's overcast with no visible sunshine.

Hello! It depends on what tint you prefer relative to the lighting conditions in your environment. For cloudy overcast to medium light, check out the Drivers or Drivers Gradient. For medium to intense light, the 555 NM Silver is a good choice. For bright intense light, take a look at the Sedona Silver Bi-Mirror! You can also give our opticians a call or email us for more recommendations! 😎

Prizm sapphire is way better than red iridium polarized on a super bright day. Personal experience only.
