This is a Chess Challenger CC7 from 1979 - a much improved version of the original Chess Challenger CC1 from 1976. "Chess Computer Uk" has the following to say about these magnificient machines:
The Fidelity Chess Challenger, often referred to as the CC1, was the first chess computer sold to the public. The story of how that came about can be found here. Fidelity won the race to get a chess computer on the market but they made it with a bungled product. The playing notation on the board was reversed, with files labelled 1 to 8 and ranks labelled A to H. The computer used this notation to accept and output moves. So a popular opening move e2-e4 would appear as 5b-5d.
For chess players keying in moves in this reverse notation is a slow and frustrating experience. It is difficult not to make mistakes and ruin the game, particularly as there is no going back once the move is entered. The other main shortcomings were the extremely poor standard of play and that the CC1 accepted illegal moves.
Fidelity knew that criticism was coming and the documentation with the CC1 offered an upgrade. The upgrade involved sending the CC1 back to the factory where a new three level chess program ROM was substituted and the entire chessboard / keypad surface membrane was peeled off and replaced with one having the correct notation.
Playing a game with a CC1. Patience and concentration is needed to key in the moves in reverse notation. I start with 5b-5d. CC1 replies 5g-5e. White Knight 7a-6c. Black Knight 2h-3f. Then I send out a tempter 4b-4d. CC1 4g-4f. I start to go for the kill. Really! Knight 6c-7e. CC1 accepts the pawn present Knight 3f-4d. And the killer blow Queen 4a-6g. CC1 signals that it is Checkmated with the I Lose light.
It is chess, but not as we know it. Chess Sid Samole and Ron Nelson style from Spring 1977.

Oh my, such a rare occurrence!
What is this? A crossover episode?

This computer could probably beat me if I wasn't turned on. ( ͥ° ÍÊ ÍĄÂ°)
Well stop flirting with it then
â@@shmekieWhat are you robophobic?
I think the computer wanted to play Be2 (read: F1,E2) in that first game, which seems to make a lot more sense than Ke2. Amazing video regardless, not only is it great ASMR, but your extensive chess knowledge goes so well with it.
I also thought it wanted to F1 to E2, But It's hard from our angle to see if it's E or F. Pretty sure the bot's right here and is taking Bishop E2 to D3 which is legal.
I find it very interesting to play with a program created for this more than 40-year-old machine, the mere fact of playing against the technological past is very attractive and the level of play is for everyone
I really like the sound of placing the pieces on the board. It reminds me of the sound of a piece getting capured in some of your previous videos
great video! I recently learned the basics of chess programming and am currently making my first engine so I find it very intereresting to find out about the history of computer chess! Thanks a lot !
So cool! Be sure to watch my sleep documentary on the history of computer chess. It is on the channel. Let us know how it goes with your engine!
Everything about this video is perfect. Thanks for the great content!
I love you, ASMR CHESS. This is exactly what I needed today. Thank you so much.
Im so happy and proud of you man, you've come a long way and build yourself a very nice channel
I've been getting hooked on chess and this is the best way for me to learn some history on chess, I also love your voice it's so relaxing đ
Youâre my all time favorite channel - I love when I start drifting off and lose track of the moves đŽ
i'm pretty sure my grandparents have this same thing in their storage somewhere
edit: found it, sadly it's broken somehow and won't turn on
if you can you should take it for a spin. It's a blast playing against it!
Beautiful Chess computer! Beautiful video!
Best timing đđ„âš
Love these videos
Hey! I loved your video on the Sicilian and that is actually why I started getting better with my chess games and strategizing better. I personally love the polish opening and would like you to go over it. I start b4, bishop b2, and usually the opponent will play e3 and then take my b pawn with their bishop, what they don't see is I can then move bishop g7 and then take the rook.
Love the lights youâve been using recently!
What a great way to end a night!
This has to be my favorite board so far. Watching you calculate which moves are best is great for learning and enjoying thank you!!
What an antique! That machine looks beautiful, however fiddly it must be to play :)
First here so I'll say thanks for so many videos recently, they've all been great đ
Iâd love to watch you play some online games again. Maybe against strangers just some good ol chess
Great video! ââ
accurate as it is currently 1:24 in the morning for me and Iâm knackered
Alas, this video had the opposite of the intended effect. Watching you get ahead of the computer with your speculative moves and no way to backtrack this other than hoping you remember the original situation correctly... stress level 3000!
Love your videos, have you got anything planned related to the Candidates tournament this year?
Still dont.. Probably wont ever, .. Know anything about Chess but stay hypnotized by this masterpiece of a game. H
Great videi
when i play video games, i always have your videos in the background
The computer was trying to play a chess hustler move in the first game haha
Somebody suggested it wanted to play Be2 and I misread it because of the angle. I think that is probably correct.
so close to 70.000 subscribers on the best channel on youtube..
That was for sales at Sears. I would stand at the counter and play it, and I could beat it some times. I was still in high school and did not work; somehow I got enough money and secretly bought it, took it home and plugged it in on the hidden side of my bed and let it think over night. That did not let it play good chess, but compared to me, it did.
"With all avenues of attack now exhausted the Chess computer finally played the greatest move ever created, flipping over the board then setting fire to the building"
Beautiful
I really liked how you made the white knights tap on the board as you moved them it was a nice sound I hope to hear it again and the lighting lately is pretty and relaxing. Very interesting video I wonder did the computer have any issues while you were recording this or did it run smoothly
It didnât have any issues. I thought I experienced a bug at the end of game 1 but as someone pointed out I probably just misread the screen. Pretty amazing that it still works smoothly after 43 years.
@@ASMRChess That's incredible I will have to watch the video again I feel asleep very quickly.
I got the same chess computer and it still works very well!
It is a really nice machine!
Back in the day, I had one of these. Looks like yours suffers from the same problem I had at times, the enter button being temperamental and sometimes needing a second push.
Cool! And yeah EN is a bit temperamental.
Love the games against these ancient chess computers. Would be fun to play them myself. I think the computer playd really well. It did as you said, have the horizon effect where it does see some moves in the future but not the whole picture. But anyway. I think it playd really well given it's age!! :)
I presume every single chess program suffers from horizon effect, but once they got enough power to get some quality tree depth, they become hard for humans to beat ( and of course, eventually, they became unbeatable by humans.) This thing has so little power. 6502 running at maybe 1 Mhz, hardly any RAM. Thinking it can't be doing much better than 2-ply, giving it serious shortcomings. Maybe better at highest level, but thinking this might be under 1300 ELO. Good enough to beat me, I should know, I bought one on ebay, But probably a bit of a joke to a decent chess club player.
Perhaps the computer wanted to play Be2 instead of Ke2 in the first game? It's hard to tell from our perspective. Great video btw.
Ahh! Brilliant! That has got to be it. Thanks!
Iâm sorry but what is Be2 and Ke2???
@@PadeJuan bishop e2 instead of king e2
@@derdiktator8061 thank you very much!
@@PadeJuan No Problem Bro đ€đ , and to clarify (i hope i wrote that correctly because i speak german (Austria) )
Q stands for queen , b bishop , n knight, k king , r rook
But in german it would be entirely different
Amazing
close to 70k that is nice
Hello, I was wondering if one day you could make a video of how you analyze the chess games that you make videos on. I find it very interesting and Iâd like to learn how to analyze games myself. Thank you!!!
Great idea!
It's impossible for us to tell if you misread that move in the first game, bc we can't see the screen entirely. But yes I agree with the comments that it is possible it wanted to play bishop Be2 (F1 to E2) instead of king Ke2 (E1 to E2).
A thought I had was when you mentioned the horizon effect.
I could have easily dismissed it as the computer simply forgetting some previous moves and you read them correctly.
15:44 this made me smile
Works better than trying to meditate
The little beeps are very nice
Happy you feel that way because I had to manually adjust their volume on all three mics in the edit for every time they appeared in the video :)
Did you get a new mic? This video has awesome sound quality:)
No but I used my 3 mics in a different configuration than usual.
What ELO does this simulate? Or can you set it
I remember i had a chess computer where each square had a button which made keying in moves much easier
That is how the other more modern chess computers I have played work as well - except the fancy ChessUp one that registers the moves automatically.
25:12 - Pretty sure the computer wanted the bishop to move F1-E2!
awesome video âš have you ever thought of having a channel that isnât just chess?
A bit. Not sure what I could do on it though.
Attempt number 3 at trying to get through at least a quarter of this video
CL 1 (chess level 1) Is the easiest lvl I've even played Schoolmate (E4-BB4-QF3-QF7#) successfully against that lvl from time to time. I was 1600 on the chessclub and managed to win over CL 5 at most. . The best player at my club defeated CL 7 in blindcheck.
The first game I believe the computer wanted the white bishop to e2.
I still play the Budapest defense as my only resource against the queens gambit. And although my performance is maybe at 50%, it is a pity that I never get these types of positions which you showcased in your video with lining up on the h file. Maybe because Eric Rosen did a video on it and it is better known by now but I am still hoping
One day!
4th time watching this video. Never got past the 5 minute mark. Wish me luck đ€
Weird CZcams recommended but good video
I used to not like your videos. Now I watch them soon as they come out. you really have found the right mix of interesting content vs just ASMR.. and not speaking super slow is great. soft spoken normal conversation is best lol
Please do immortal games that happened recently if it's possible
I have owned that sort of chess chesscomputer in the easiest lvl (CL 1) the computer had an annoying habit of thinking chess pieces were on strange squares (especially when It was near chessmate...) you can check the positions any time by pressing PV to check. In the harder lvls though.
(con) that problem is resolved.
Do you think itâs saying what its next move will be at the end? As it got checkmated it said c7-d8 which is a valid move, but your rook would have just taken the queen with that move.

Nice reference!
first time i see chess ASMR was on a Mr. Bean film
You know how there are these chess boards that can move pieces on their own?
Amazing video. Are you enjoying the candidates ?
Thanks and yes :)
Amazing to me that the first commercially available chess computer didnât come until 7 years after the moon landing
You can watch my documentary in the history of computer chess to learn more :)
we need more beach videos
I hope i dont fall asleep while watching
what a cool machine. awesome video. anyone know why the b,c and g letters are lowercase while the rest are capitalized?
Great question! I have no idea
I bet it has something to do with being able to use the same template (or something similar) during production for those letters. When using lower case, the b is just a mirrored d, and the g is an upside down 6.
So in other words, it probably has something to do with speeding up production and/or lowering production costs
I just noticed that there is a flaw in my logic because one of the other buttons does have an uppercase B...
this is a serious mystery that needs solving.
Itâs because the lowercase b c and g more closely resemble how they are shown in the 7 segment display
Jugar ajedrez en asmr, a mi al menos me parece muy elegante xd

No that honor belongs to MANIAC (1956)
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine.
Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call the temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you.
But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal...
