- New physical border checks on goods imported from the EU, including meat, fish and dairy, have come into force.
The government believes the related charges will cost British firms about £330 million annually and see food inflation rise over three years. 0.2% over thee years.
But food industry bosses have said the checks will add billions to the cost of doing business with the EU.
Customers at supermarkets, restaurants and takeaways could pay more as a result.

Actually, they don't happen. EU exporters' goods to third countries are NOT being checked and exporters are NOT obliged to stick to EU food standards. Not even the exporters of sub-standard goods could be made liable *edit: in the EU* since us EU27 🇪🇺 only check what comes in, not what goes out.

One of the big issues was/is David Cameraman told the civil service not to bother planning for a leave vote because remain would win the day! And he walked always. The EU checks for all foodstuffs going to the Single Market. It's NOT responsible for checking foodstuffs coming through EU or from EU going to Britain, which is outside the Single Market. Checks and standards are required by WTO rules. Those coming in tomorrow are just the beginning.
We import a lot of food from EU even in a good farming year. Which this year it's definitely NOT good!

@@markwelch3564 it would be foolish to assume that market forces will resolve this issue as the panelists suggests, government needs to reintroduce price protection for produce. Unfortunately, the supermarkets won't absorb that cost & even with Brexit tariffs , due to scale of their purchasing power, they will just import cheaper goods & domestic agriculture still fails.
So the government also needs to address the supermarket monopoly. Perhaps, mandatory domestic purchasing quotas in return for tax breaks.
In time, with produce price protection & guaranteed domestic purchasing the sector could stabilise, grow & eventually production prices would reduce.

All trade into the EU including food had EU tariffs applied, outside the EU we make our own arrangements and tariffs i.e its now completely under UK govt control how much food costs. Plus the ridiculous EU agricultural policy which pays farmer to NOT produce food to keep prices artificially high...

Not only Brexiteers should be blamed for this mess. For decades, most British took quite a negative stance towards the EU, even if in the end they voted to remain. The EU was blamed for everything by almost everyone. This overall negativity and the incredible lies of the leave campaign caused this Brexit. So yes there are import checks that should have been implemented years ago like we did here in the EU. From day one after the UK left, we had checks on anything entering the EU from the UK. That's what one does with goods coming from a "third country". So why the whining now? You all knew this was coming. In the current circumstances, you should be happy that you were spared the checks for many years. I know, you all do not like to read such language and I do not like to write it either but I am still so pissed off by you guys leaving. This should never have happened. NEVER!!!!

From 1 January 2021, as per the Brexit Deal thrashed out by Johnson and Frost the EU applied its third-country customs and regulatory regime to goods imported from Great Britain to the EU resulting in extra checks and paperwork. The Tories kicked the can down the road to massage the figures and prevent adding to the rising cost of living expense, embarrassingly the Tories did it 5 times, but from Wednesday 1st May, the tens of millions of lorries that arrive in UK ports daily will needed to be checked, this will obviously result in more cost, paperwork and delays. This is the total opposite of what Reece Mogg, Farage , Frost Johnson, Gove etc etc said would happen, they stated food and goods would be cheaper and trade from the U E would remain exactly the same, as the Governments own Import Agency assessments predict, this is simply untrue, Before leaving the EU all of our imports that came through Rotterdam from 3rd counties were checked there, but since 2021 all goods that enter the EU from 3rd countries bound for non EU countries are the responsibility of their destination
The import checks are no different to every country in the world engaged in international trade. It has nothing to do with Brexit.
@@manoo422 Your correct, before Brexit a vast amount of our imports from around the World came via the 2 giant Holland Hub ports and checks/ paperwork were dealt with there, the dutch didn't need to check any goods bound for a 3rd Country ( Non EU states ) that passed through these hubs. We are a 3rd Country so these checks are now our responsibility, as is the cost, paperwork and facilities

The biggest problem is that thw Torys opened the UK to cheap food from other countrys .UKs farmers cant compeat with that so they just stop farming and if you arnt born into farming you woud need doing it and its impossibel to start a farm without the years of investment of your entire famely .
Rees Mogg is on record telling us that food would be cheaper after Brexit. Johnson told us there would be no non-tariff barriers.

It might be an idea to have guests on that know what they are talking about. When the UK left the single market and the customs union it left the single market’s regulatory system. That means produce coming into the single market from the rest of the world is no longer checked at the first or subsequent EU ports it passes through if its intended destination is the UK, now a third country. That is why the government has to bring in checks at UK ports. The new checks will not be as comprehensive as the checks the British consumer could rely on when part of the EU. What was never appreciated in this country was that being part of the EU brought shared benefits and responsibilities and also shared burdens, like being able to fully check everything that came into the country. Time constraints and capacity means full checks cannot be carried out any more, thus subjecting the consumer to potential food poisoning and the farming community to outbreaks of disease. The ongoing catastrophe of Brexit rumbles on and it will never end until it is entirely reversed.

Why is James Max so incompetent?! The UK has not outsourced its checks to the EU - therefore the Netherlands (or Holland as he put it) are NOT checking goods destined for the UK because the goods are not destined for the EU Single Market. The UK left the EU and left Freedom of Movement. One of those Freedoms was Freedom of Movement of Good. Also - as per WTO rules - the UK HAS to check goods coming into the UK market from the EU. Otherwise, it would be giving an unfair advantage of one market over another. This is basic stuff and yet the like of James Max is allowed on these shows to - as they George Eustice said about Boris Johnson - offer mis-speaks - which are in fact lies.

The panel don't seem to have any expertise in the subject. From their questions they don't seem to understand the EU, the Single Market or the UK becoming a third country.
Let's examine these.
Britain has not been self-sufficient in food since the Napoleonic Wars, 200 hundred years ago. Since then we have imported food to feed the population of Britain.
Right now about 40% of the food we consume is imported from the EU. It is higher at some points of the year.
Checks have always taken place. When Britain was in the single market goods destined for Britain did not just arrive here directly. For example, a truck of fruit from Morocco would enter Spain first, When Britain was an EU member the EU standards checks would happen there. Today, with Britain outside the EU, the goods are not checked. That is the responsibility of the British. All the EU officials will do is make sure the lorry is sealed so they can't drop off unchecked goods in the EU.
Checks happened because of the international agreement of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Each customs area must behave the same to countries outside that customs area. So when Britain left the Single Market and Customs Union in 2021 the EU was forced to apply checks due to international rules, All third countries have these checks for entry,
I say Britain here and not the UK because Northern Ireland is still in the Single Market for goods due the Withdrawal Agreement,
Britain should have applied checks in 2021. Britain was in breach of WTO rules. The EU didn't complain because it benefitted the EU exporters. It also benefits smugglers and criminals too. There has been completely open borders for goods with no checks, The EU does not check goods leaving it's market.
However, eventually, Britain is now implementing the checks it should have done three years ago, All goods from outside Britain need checking. The issue is that the EU is Britain's largest market so being outside the Single Market means more checks and more staff to do the checks, This increases costs and consumer prices.
This is an inevitable consequence of leaving the Single Market. It's a consequence the Brexiters wanted to keep quiet as long as possible. They wanted to persuade people that leaving the Single Market and Customs Union would have no consequences. Alternatively that the EU is "punishing us". The UK is the first country in the world to vote for worse trading conditions with its largest market and impose economic sanctions on itself.
It's actually quite easy to understand. Today's panel debate shows few people in the media do understand the consequences of becoming a third country,

Isn't it odd how every 'improvement' foisted on us brings price rises rather than reductions. Remember the plastic bag scam, yes scam. 5p per plastic bag to improve the environment we were told. Now those plastic bags are thicker & cost from 20p to 50p & they've branded them 'bag for life' to make us think we'll never have to buy another. The 5p ones lasted just as long & used less plastic. Yet supermarkets use an unreasonably high amount of thick plastic in their packaging. I bought a six pack of Walkers crisps. When I opened one of the bags I had to search for the contents. You could have gotten all six bags into one. Oh but that comes under the heading of 'marketing' the magic word that makes everything alright. 'Never mind the environment, that'll have to wait. Our bank accounts stuffed with the consumers hard earned money is far, far more important than the environment that we have vowed to protect.' The hypocrisy is astounding yet not at all surprising as that's the quality of persons we have running the show these days. They know well how to pull fancy words out of the hat to extract just that little bit more, all for our good & well-being of course. What next I wonder....I can't wait.

Do these people have any understanding of the reality of how things work,it,s all well and good saying buy more British but we don’t and have never for decades produced enough to feed ourselves and even if we did their is not enough farm labourers to harvest it,then their would also be the big problem for most people with ordinary everyday jobs being able to afford it.,and that’s when they would start importing the carcinogenic sprayed crops and hormone injected meat from the USA and other such countries.

We live in the 21st century, people might not want to just buy seasonally. They might want to enjoy all round imported food like the rest of the advanced developed world. I think not being able to is a deprivation of brexit not a benefit.

It has been explained by the NFU that British farmers can only produce enough food to last still August then no food
not true, goods that go to the UK via Europe are no longer inspected, only goods that remain in the EU are inspected. Goods from the EU destined for a third country (UK) are also not checked, the English government should do so.
Why would the European Union check things that are going to Britain
I am not happy to pay more for food as we were told by the Leave campaign that food would be cheaper. We are the only country on te planet to impose economic sanctions on itself. We are a bit dim to have believed this especially as the food (and everything else) will be unnecesarily more expensive than it needs to be for ever.

Why are these checks needed? For safety because the EU does not check goods that just pass through the EU like arriving in Rotterdam and moving on to the UK.
Because of WTO rules which Quitterlings praised so much before the referendum. Without these checks, the UK gives the EU preferential access to its market and any WTO member state can sue the UK for that.

The gentleman extolling EU checks seems unaware that food, flowers, animals and animal products delivered to a delivery port of entry in the EU but destined only for the UK are NOT checked. Why would the EU check material when it is not meant as an EU delivery?
Likewise if products from another country are delivered to a privately
owned port in the UK (meaning not Dover) from another country, in or out of the EU - again exclusively and only for the UK - those products are not inspected automatically by the seller or by the people providing the transportation.
Why would another country inspect ANY trade goods destined exclusively for the UK unless there was a specific trade agreement specifying that would be done as an agreed condition of the sale? No specific trade agreement = not required.
If the Tory government has not set up individual trade deals with individual countries in the EU, or with Australia or New Zealand or Canada or the US - or any other country - with specific language and commitments regarding exactly how where and when inspections are to be done PRIOR to leaving the selling country, the seller has no obligations does he?
Even then, the buyer (importer) clearly must have some way of assuring the products being sold to UK customers are authentic, safe to eat or drink, safe for animal consumption, free from transmitable diseases etc unless the UK is deciding to risk dangerous reactions to tradeed goods which can be dangerous.

Being an "outside", stand alone, single country, with responsibilities formerly met by membership in the EU, means the UK has accepted sole responsibility for everything not written down in legal contracts. That is what a hard Brexit is: The UK must do it all. Whatever has not been negotiated in all details and legally agreed to by both parties is only a "fend for yourself" buyer beware understanding.
For the sheer survival of the UK people, discussion programs need to be moderated by people who can ask participants to be detailed and specific when someone says goods transiting from the EU have already been inspected. Just because something transits through a country does not mean it acquires qualities being applied to items actually made, grown, mined or raised in that country. Learn to think clearly and not assume anything. The UK has no one watching out for UK people anymore.

EU is not checking goods going to UK. Why should the EU cover the cost of checks that UK decided to have due to brexit..

another lie , the EU doesnt check anything thats going to the UK , where before brexit , the items were checked at the landing port so most checks were done in Spain , Netherlands , etc , now if items are only going to UK , the EU just wave them on as its not their problem
