- The O’Neill Wave of the Winter is the pinnacle of the North Shore season. It's the most spectacular ride from the most challenging stretch of coast on Earth over a four-month period as chosen by our elite judging panel of Gerry Lopez, Shane Dorian, Pancho Sullivan and Shawn Briley.
And yeah: this year was very, very close. Hundreds of entries. Some of the craziest Outer Reef waves we've ever seen, mixed in with equally intense Backdoor, Off-the-Wall and Pipe barrels. And while there is only ever one winner -- who will take home $25,000 -- we documented the best of these spectacular rides over the whole darn winter and packaged it into a short film that celebrates the heroes of the North Shore, complete with insights from Surfline's Director of Forecasting Kevin Wallis on the crazy winter season, the judges on how they made their (tough) call, and the winning surfer (who was understandably very stoked.)

So many absolutely amazing waves. But my favorite wave this winter that amazed me when it happened and now when I saw it again was Nathan’s early season backdoor wave. Absolutely critical. Clean drop, Super deep, doggy door. A beaut.

I would like to see reverse angle. I didnt think Billy would make it out and he barely did. Healys wave was insane because it was bigger/steeper but I would say they both won
I gotta go find the other angles too but I would've lost it watching from the beach with the photog. So deep on such a screamer. That was definitely one of the ones I had to watch multiple times to fully digest. So sick

Hmmm, tbh, none of the judges nor Mark Healey seemed to have any conviction in that decision. I think the pressure of it having to be a 'pipe' style wave got to them. The outer reef waves were on a whole other level

JJF rides a barrel the size of a shopping mall at Himalayas and it‘s not the wave of the winter? Psyched for Mark Healey, don‘t get me wrong. I would have agreed with the selection any other year, but not with the waves that were ridden at the outer reef this year. They were simply unrideable for almost anyone with very few exceptions. Some guys tried, most of them ate it, only JJF and Koa were able to ride waves for the history books.
Thought the same thing. JJF wave at the outer reef was the winner, BY FAR, in my eyes. Nothing comes close. Mark's wave was good, but would not make my top 3.

Some deeper barrels at backdoor but most of them were smaller waves imo. Still really close, Nate's particularly was amazing

That whole session was sick. I thought those guys were crazy for not going to Jaws that day. Turned out being one for the books.
They were nice, and incredibly rare to get a wave like that, but they still didn't have the square shape and balls out speed of pipe, and especially Mark's wave.

I find this to be very poorly done! I want to experience the rides and hear discussions. This is just a bunch of very short pieces. I had much more fun watching the rides on the days when they actually occurred. The music doesn't fit well at all, so I turned off the sound. I don't mean to be so negative, but that is what I am feeling. Why don't you hire professionals that understand presentation to put this together. Maybe next year?

Exactly. Marks wave was good and all but it was no where near griffins two great rides as well as john johns at back door during Valentine’s Day. This is some bullshit. It should’ve went to John tho. What happened to the "Performer of the Winter" and "Newcomer of the Winter" Awards? They were always quite interesting and maybe a possibility to honor John or Griffins insane Winter. They both had a crazy amount of waves that could have easily won it (and maybe should have). Awesome movie and footage tho. Props to the filmers
I think without question Griffin won Performer of the Winter. Just look at how many legit submissions he had, not to mention one of his waves TIED Mark's in total score. So yeah, Griff for sure. Which is cool because I never really thought of him as a big pipeline guy

Congrats to mark but there were many better waves. The WSL judges have been woeful this year and it looks like the wave of the winter judges have been coached by them. Poor judging only discourages participation and takes away interest in the sport. The exact opposite of what’s needed

This was one of the best years ever! And one of the worst judging sessions... Not sure that wave was even top 10... perfectly ridden by Mark but please. Jerry saying he had to claw into it and everyone else was bailing... so lame. Did Jerry even watch JJ 'claw' in at Himalayas? It's like they didn't want to hand it out and appear biased or something. There were tens of perfect Backdoor waves among the clips that were harder to 'claw' into. Let's say I definitely no longer 'trust the process' at all. Not to promote any favorite wave (though obviously JJ was robbed) but pause the vid at 14:46 and in a separate window pause WOW #184 czcams.com/video/0gpm3G-ve30/video.html at 00:03 and tell me what you think? Bigger wave, deeper drop, higher speed, everything better except Mark covered up longer. And that isn't even my favorite Pipe ride this year. But... so awesome this year!
I think johns johns ride at back door should’ve won hands down during the Valentine’s Day swell. He was deeper, more in control, while the wave it self was way bigger, more critical, thicker, and a much better and longer barrel. Marks wave was just a worse version of john john’s.

John's backdoor wave was not bigger, it was smaller. Longer barrel but pipe will always give precedence to the old heads, fair or not. Also criticizing Jerry is some lame kook shit... cmon dude. I will say that I liked Mark's wave from last year a bit better. Outer Reefs was cool but more of a gimmick, big waves but almond shaped and none of the speed and power of pipe. Also no offense but that Jamie O'Brien wave you cited was nowhere near Wave of the winter. Yeah nice drop but he was hardly in the barrel at all, that never had a chance.
@@PlaySA Agree the JOB ride wasn't any better than ten or so others, just used it as an example. I got no problem criticizing the legend! Heck, Jerry's early rides are my wallpapers. But he's biased on this one, in my opinion. On the last point, paddling into Himalayas is infinitely harder than pipe, or even xl Waimea for that matter. And to catch it barreling is next level. Only a few even have the physical body to do that, let alone the wave sense and skill. JJ getting cathedral there, more like wave of the decade...
