RM is a poet. You can not change my mind.
His lyricism reads, sounds and works like poetry: a few words have multiple meanings and derivate in multiple chains of thought. Every time you listen to them, you discover new details, new ideas, new insights. Even when he's being straightforward, there's still some some philosophy or revelation or a big question or an aesthetic behind them. A poem is full of passion, but every word is chosen carefully, with intention. They're puzzle pieces, every piece has a place to create the full picture. It's a form of ART. WORDS WITH INTENTION.
SUGA's lyricism is like "an arrow straight to the heart": you immediately understand the emotion he's trying to convey, you don't need to even know what he's saying to know "what you're supposed to FEEL". What he says is always interesting too, and it has layers too, but, from the first listen... You usually feel that same way after listening to his song 1000 times. Even when the song is sociopolitical or when it displays an idea, your first impression is a STAB OF EMOTION forever tattooed in your memory.
J HOPE's lyricism is like a playground, an amusement park. A place where magical things happen, where you are encouraged to bend the rules. It's full of bright primal colors, you walk around with bounce in your steps and inevitably feel the childlike impulse of starting to dance around, or start imitating his onomatopoeias and alibis. There's a quirky creativity in his choice of analogies and a pure-hearted kindness in his message. Even when he expresses anger or sadness, there's this sense of DYNAMIC RHYTHM that is always moving, always unpredictable and ALIVE.
EDIT: Some examples to illustrate my description:
    RM:
    - "From the time everyone is born / Life is more beautiful because it uses death as the collateral payment." (Life)
    - "I grew a flower that can't be bloomed / In a dream that can't come true." (FAKE LOVE)
    - "Why do you keep trying to hide under your mask, / when even the scars made by your own mistakes mark your constellations." (Answer: Love Myself.)
    SUGA:
    - "If you think you’re gonna crash, accelerate even harder, you idiot" (Intro: Nevermind)
    - "Hip hop came to me gently / Like a little child looks for his mother, / it naturally permeated into my life (...) If loving this culture was a sin, I would have died hundreds of times." (Hip Hop Phile)
    - "To be honest, I miss you, / but I’ll erase you now / Because doing so hurts me less than resenting(blaming) you" (Spring Day)
    J HOPE:
    - "The standard of happiness is you, and you walk that path / I wish to fill up faith / Like a piece of cake that is simple and filling (...) I wish, I could be a Piece Of Peace." (P.O.P)
    - "Oh, I’m on top of the beat beat, wiggle wiggling, jingle jingling / roll rolling, beagle beagling (...) This is just for tasting, still a snack / My rap is a Korean meal that fills your stomach." (Cypher pt. 3)
    - "My sin, the dog that bites and tears my resting self / “Don’t do that,” although I shout it out, every day I’m hung up on accomplishments." (Dis-ease)
    - "It’s just that for once I want to draw a different picture of my life / A canvas dream // Beyond the boundary over there, let’s feel it / Like the hole Alice fell into, like the path leading to Hogwarts, it’ll be a world of mirages" (Daydream)

This song was just an answer back to everyone who said rm wasn't "good-looking" enough(yes clearly they had a sight impediment) to be an idol and when he made the switch from rapper to idol, people also said he abandoned hip-hop. Meaning regular rappers were upset and regular idol stans. One particular "sun-bae" called him and suga girls for wearing makeup and essentially they are girls for doing the whole idol thing and mocking them.(B-free is his name) He addressed some things he said, in this song which is why you heard him speak about "shirt and skinny jeans, that's not hiphop" referencing to the mockery they received from him.

YES RM is an incredible lyricist. Everything RM just says has impact and his IQ of 148 allows him to get things across so clearly. I feel one of the reasons why BTS is so loved and respected it's because they have always been themselves, they have always stayed grounded. The boys who started in 2014 are the same men we see now. They are the biggest act in the world right now but they are still goofy, they are humble they are just themselves.

Yes, they have evolved from their debut days they still are humble kind and caring seven young men they have not changed their attitude is still positive and they always love and recognize ARMY no matter how many awards they win they still have that pure heart and they still have that passion and hunger to continue to make music the way they like to!💜

Please check out RM’s “Joke” next! For the official music video there are no subs, they are automatically generated so I advice you check out a lyrics video first and then the mv because that song is literally genius!! As the title says it’s a “joke” he pretty much makes fun of all those people who call themselves rappers just because they can talk fast but in the end they’re not really saying anything. That’s the reason why there are some sentences in the song that “don’t make sense” (like the bibidi bobidi one). But at the same time he’s proving that he is still a rapper even though he left the “underground world” to become an idol. That’s what the song is about I bet you’ll love it!!

    Thanks for the video!
    Here some info about RM:
Namjoon started as an underground rapper when he was 13 and gained fame bc of his skills, all of the songs we have of him from his time as Runch Randa, Randa, The Nexiest and Largo survived only because of reposters. He deleted all his songs around 2010, when BPB was created. He left the underground scene and Joined a music company, after that he received a lot of hate for "betraying hip hop" and that later on ended up being the reason of his identity crisis (kpop idol vs rapper/artist) and one of the main themes of his first mixtape.
He's is the leader, Main rapper, songwriter, composer, and producer of BTS.
He has two mixtapes, the first one is *RM* (2015) contains 11 songs including a ft with Krizz Kaliko, this mixtape is about/by the one that left underground hip hop scene (Runch randa) and joined a kpop group (Rap Monster) Its pure hip hop, insane flows, a lot of aggression and confusion but realization at the same time
The second one is *mono* (2018) It contains 7 songs, it's a mix of genres, It’s atmospheric, reflective and pure art btw
Mono goes into more detail of Namjoon as a person, having loneliness as main theme
Also he had collab with Wale, Fall Out Boy, Warren G, Little Nas X, Honne, the korean hip hop legends Tiger JK and MFBTY, and more
He's known for his extensive use of wordplay, with double/ triple entendres, ambiguous meanings, references and metaphors

A sunbae is your senior, but it doesnt have to do with age. A group that debuted after BTS f ex will call them their sunbaes, even if Junkook is younger than someone in the new group.. And BTS calls everyone who was in the industry before them their sunbaes. 😊
Fyi, I think you'll enjoy the Rolling Stone interview with BTS that came out today!
(also, regarding honorifics, a younger boy uses "hyung" for an older boy he is close with. Donsaeng is a term used for someone younger than you, but they dont really use honorifics when adressing someone younger or someone who is the same age. A same age friend is called "chingu". Jimin and Tae are same age friends, and they even have a song together called Chingu in korean (Friends in English).
Also younger girls call older boys oppa,
younger boys call older girls noona,
and younger girls call older girls unnie. But this was perhaps info you already knew 😅😅)

  • @lixjoonhoneymt7149
    @lixjoonhoneymt7149 Před 3 lety +7

    sunbae basically means senior
so people who are "ranked" higher than you and or started their career before you
like Stray Kids would call BTS sunbae, and BTS would call SHINee and Taemin sunbae
generally its a respectful term but in the context and tone that rm is rapping in at 7:50 I would say he is talking about the "old heads" that try to control the music scene even as it evolves
just like how older people in America will say "___ isnt a rapper/singer" or "how can you call this music"
i think he is trying to say to those who started before him to suck it up and just realize music changes and they cant control it, that he is different and people like him so they should deal with it
in one single sentence that often gets ignored by most reactors (not out of ignorance but because RM raps too fast for most to read) he comments a key factor in every music genre and industry around the globe... old people trying to control the market that the larger and younger generations consume despite their lack in similarity in music

He explains everything perfectly and is very open about how he analyzes the lyrics and the music video, it's eye-opening because you would never really see how much a music video that's less then 3 minutes can tell you so much. Btw I like how you have your own message and how you analyze, you're actually very spot on when you analyze lyrics and messages of songs.
One of the reason i am love BTS most especially the rap line is their earnestness and their conviction. They know what they want to say and they say it.
This song was a fu to people who say that idol music is not music, even in Korean society, being an idol is very constrictive, there is an image of being manufactured, and there is a box that they put them in. You can do this but no more. And they are also criticize as being not manly enough, too pretty, effiminate.
And as an ex underground rapper, Suga and RM got criticize a lot, people call them as sell outs, as girls (because they wear make up) etc.

I have to be honest, since the RM mixtape isnt on spotify, it hasnt gotten the love it deserves from me 🙈 his second mixtape Mono i listen to a looot tho, especially when im feeling blue.
I think you should check out Reflection off the wings album, Intro: Persona (has an mv), and Forever Rain (has an mv).
But a lot of RMs lyrics shine through in almost all bts songs, as he writes so much of them, also the vocal line parts. Some of his best work for me is Spring Day, Black Swan, and Singularity (Tae's solo) but he basically has a hand in almost all BTS songs. He's a lyrical genius.
In fact he is the third most credited writer in KOMCA (Korean Music Copyright Association) with 171 songs as of the end of 2020, tying with PSY. And he is only 26 years old. 👀 Im so excited that I'll get to follow his career for years to come!

Thank you for doing this in your own way. Taking your time and doing it the way YOU want to. It’s refreshing. And the way you break down the lyrics, I feel like you really understand him! Gives me more to think about too, which is a rare thing I see from reaction videos.
Also I love this song (I love all of them I can’t help it lol)..I am always in awe of Joon’s galaxy brain, he has this incredible ability to play with words. And I agree, he and Yoongi are very alike in these ideas on their solo stuff (which bleeds into the group concepts too and I love that as well). Before BTS, I had never come across words by an artist that I wanted to live by. I didn’t feel much relatable. Now I feel like everything they say about life is an important lesson that can be applied to someone at some point of their lives in someway. Truly incredible.
    Thank you again, love this!!

With what you said about the black roses, for a really long time people were telling RM to leave the group and that he was too ugly, couldn't dance, wasn't talented and crap like that. It could have something to do with that, saying that he's not going anywhere of smth

RM is a fire lyrcist. Thats RM's IQ148 for ya. Also this man was in the top 1% of Korea when he was in high school. The only thing that sucks is translation from Korean to English can never be accurate which takes away the beauty of the actual lyrics. I recommend using doolset for the most accurate translation. Wale once said that if RM was an American rapper that he would be at the top.

This young man is a true poet, heart and mind. It's not what he does it's who he is. He and his art are 100% genuine reflections of who he couldn't possibly pretend to be. Much respect for each of the 7 but there is a special place in my heart for this young man. Namjoon is one of a kind. The world is lucky to have him. ❤

I'd like to think that the clip where they burned those black roses is him/the producer's way on saying "You think I'm leaving? Fuk you I'm staying and I ain't goin no where."
Holy knicketty frick frack I just realized
There's this phenomeneon where if you put a metronome on a plank with a log underneath (so basically the plank can still move) even if you start the metronome at different times, after a few seconds/minutes, it will start syncing with eachother and this really shows the "herd" mentality of how everybody starts with differing personalities, interests or opinions but ending up conforming to these copies of one another that's they deem "normal" to fit in or for the sake of stability. The constant theme of the metronome through out the video, even as the main beat of the song is definetly something.
Honestly shout out to everybody working on this music video

  • @Dipityworld
    @Dipityworld Před 3 lety

I keep saying this but I’m gonna say this again, Namjoon has such a beautiful way with words and looking at things, idk where he got it from, whether if it’s the books that he reads, or just life experience but it’s so amazing the way he perceive things in life. I for one find it fascinating. His words bring so much comfort, questioning and understanding all at once. For example there was this video I once saw where he said “people say to “dream big” but I think you don’t have to live so fiercely” (that might not be exactly what it said what it’s what I remember). When he said that you just might think about life and you reflect on it and you just might take to consideration on the things he says.
Another example is in a run ep where they were writing poems/letters to each other, he literally took a words with a basic meaning, with its basic state and gave it a whole new feeling and meaning. He brought the word to life.
You can call me crazy or say I’m over reacting all you want, but it won’t stop this from being true.
Namjoon’s words are not only fascinating but how do I explain this, captivating if I can use that word. That once you really listen to what he says and how he looks at the world you just don’t want to stop listening.I’m not only saying this because I’m an army or anything, he really is such a wise soul and every-time he speaks about something I can’t help but listen to it.

I'm always in awe of Joon's intelligence and even more for those who are able to interpret them! Nice work!! This was definitely a time he was going through some hardships, Joon and Suga were publicly ridiculed and humiliated infront of their rapper sunbaes (seniors) who mocked them for becoming 'kpop idol rappers'. They believe Joon and Suga wasted their talent on becoming idols, K-pop idols are just considered puppets in the industry who have no musical influence and just follow company orders.

Armys are sometimes (most of the time I feel like) got way too excited to show off bts, but pacing yourself and forming your own opinion is better than cramming tonnes of information. Just keep in mind the years the music was released and maybe get some context via google or later via the comments.

quick note: RM now goes by (Real Me) rather than (Rap Monster) he said that he outgrew that name, but the some of the members still jokingly or mistakenly call him that lol
also Sunbae=senpai=senior, someone who's been in the industry longer that him or debuted before him, I think he's referring to Bfree, a trash "rapper" who publicly disrespected him and suga on a radio, he said that what BTS does is not hip-hop, because BTS in their early days were more hip-hop focused group back then, and also because they wear make up 🤡 and loads of other distrustful sh*t basically criticizing RM and Suga leaving the "underground" hip-hop scene and debuting in a Kpop group..
and about the flower, rather than leaving id say that since the whole video in black&white or whatever, the flowers are not necessarily black but the emphasis was on "Burning roses"..

  • @DarthKrytie
    @DarthKrytie Před 3 lety +4

Thanks for appreciating Namjoon's lyricism. He's really one of the most talented lyricists of a generation.
I'd first rec: uhgood from RM's mono. (actually all of mono is amazing) but be careful because some of the lyric vids have very poor translations
Also, definitely Joke from RM. Joke has some of the most intricate wordplay Namjoon's done. You really need to be fluent in English and Korean culturally and linguistically to fully appreciate his lyrics. Good translators a gift.
BTS' cyphers 1-4 are great, too, to get a sense of each of BTS's rappers. They span over years and albums and you can just see the growth as you watch them. I'd suggest doing all four back to back.
UGH, DDAENG, and Baepsae are all worth looking at, too. However! All three of these really do need to watched in tandem with their 'explained by a Korean' counterpart or looking at doolsetbangtan's lyric translation because most lyric vids skip over much of the cultural context and you end up missing how impressive the wordplay is.
