One reason he chose the name SUGA is because it stands for Shooting Guard, one of his favorite positions he played in basketball. He has said that being his persona of AgustD allows him to be more raw and direct with what he is feeling and thinking. The 2016 AgustD is a bit more arrogant than the 2020 AgustD, as shown in Daechwita where the current version of himself takes out the old version of him - he says he really wants to stay grounded in his music and not be power hungry like the king. Loved it but a few gentle corrections first. Sorry. Yoongi, the G is as in go or get. Also Suga IS a rap personality. The BTS rap line goes hard af and they get solos in the BTS setting too.
Suga (the first parts of the words shooting guard, his basketball position) is also one of the most respected and sought after producers in Korea and many Western artists have worked with him. He is also a full member of the Korean Copyright Board. I think the "too far from the sugar" reference may be to Suga the idol. A watch out, if you will. But Savage Yoongi comes out when people put the R at the end of Suga so IDK. He's just the shit, man. He's probably been rapping, writing and producing for well over a decade now, as he came from the underground scene like RM. Agust D is the name he uses outside of BTS.

in a talkshow of their early debut days someone said "oh his name is suga like suger" that is where the reference is from.
Suga/AugustD is ranked in the top 3 fastest rappers in Korea. In one of his songs he rapped 114 syllables in 14 seconds. He went even faster on a radio show. You can find the clip on CZcams. The impressive thing about rapping in Korean is the greater number of syllables in a lot of their words. He took and still takes a LOT of hate from the rap scene because he came up in the underground rap scene. There is an interview with him and Rap Monster taking so much shit from other rappers telling them they could have succeeded in rap but went kpop and called them girls. The fucked up thing is he was asked to produce a lot of musical for rappers that insulted him and he was never paid for his work. One of the men who talked shit in that same interview actually auditioned to join BTS but was denied. He came up struggling for years and he paid his dues.
Not sure where you got that info about his nickname Suga coming from " sweet" as a counter balance to his fierce personality. Also, I am not aware that a producer from Bighit would be the one giving him that name, I think Yoongi has picked it by himself by joining first syllables of "shooting guard" in Hangul ( Korean) which was his basketball position when he used to play and he ended up with Suga ( SU + GA). I am sorry for nitpicking like this but Mr. Min Yoongi happens to be my bias in BTS and a soul wizard of healing so I tend to go overboard :-) Apologies if it comes across as redundant nagging.
He is such a great writer, lyricist and producer ( and rapper naturally). If you are interested to witness more of his dualities

Yoongi's first solo mixtape is so laden with anger and emotion. It consists of tracks he's made in the time from before their debut up to 2016. He still had stuff to prove back then, anger and shade to let out towards all the people who doubted him and his group. It feels so raw and hungry to me, and that's why it has a special place in my heart.

Its so intreseting that Yoongi is an idol because he originally wanted to be a full time rapper before joining BTS, and I just randomly think about how his life could have been so different if he chose that path instead.

I love how he's stuck inside this "house", but at the end you realize it's a container/a box, and at the end he's sitting outside that proverbial box. He can't be contained, he can't be put in a box, but also his style is outside the box. This is why I love Yoongi and BTS!

I don’t know if anyone told you yet but Suga’s name was actually chosen himself (that info isn’t entirely correct) because he used to play “Shoo”ting “Gua”rd in his high school basketball team. So in Korean it’s actually not related to sugar, it’s just the 2 first syllables of his basketball position! He only found out it was like “sugar” through English

I've only ever heard his stage name Suga being based off his basketball position as a shooting guard... shooooo gaaaah.
Yoongi (Yoon Gi, also sometimes spelled Yoon Ki) is pronounced like the gee in geek... or like what they wear in Karate, the Gee. I've also heard it pronounced more like Key, on occasion.
