I've Never Seen Avatar, So I Watched the Live Action

  • Avatar the Last Airbender has always been one of those stories that's been constantly talked about around me, but I've never really gotten around to watching it. When I say constantly, I mean CONSTANTLY. Long time friends of mine still rewatch Avatar the Last Airbender at least once a year and every time they tell me how great it is. I was planning on watching Avatar's animated adaptation, since it's the one that gets all the praise(we don't talk about that hollywood flopbuster). However, when I heard about the controversy surrounding live action Avatar the Last Airbender, I knew I had to start with it so I could go in with the perspective of someone who's never seen a minute of Avatar. I know a lot of hard core Avatar fans have been complaining about the adaptation and although it isn't entirely perfect, there's still a lot of good contained in it. It brought the world of Avatar to life and I was immediately hooked onto it after seeing the high production value for some of these locations. I'm glad it's already been renewed for seasons 2 and 3.
    Thanks so much for watching this video! If you enjoyed it, feel free to like and subscribe! Have a wonderful day :)

    You need to start from the beginning. Because Bumi is awesome and a fan favorite character. He's delightful and brilliant. And Sokka's character arc is so not what's in the live action. They gave him and Azula both this weird insecurity thing that they don't have in the cartoon. They have other flaws, but not anxiety.
    Also you need a better and more meaningful introduction to Roku. And Aang's whole trauma about fire. And Katara actually struggling and not being a Mary Sue.
    So, yeah. They cut out all the good stuff.

    "Some random cabbage seller in Omashu"
    Oh my sweet little child 😂You don't know the hold that cabbage seller has on the fandom lol
    Thank you so much for this video. I have been defending this show for a while now. So many lovers of the original cartoon HATE IT. I grew up watching the cartoon, and I LOVE it. I asked myself the question: How would someone who has never seen the cartoon think of the live action show? You have addressed all the things I love/like about the show with great detail, all the things that the haters overlook. I didn't love most of the dialogue and pacing, but the real heart of the show (like the dilemmas that Zuko and Aang face and burden) was done so well that it makes me want to rewatch the show.
    I am SEATED for Zuko and Iroh 100%.
    They need to fix Azula (and Mai and Ty Lee) in season 2, or else I am not going to care about them in the slightest when their actions start to have actual impact.

    They made Aang a huge cry baby, man he cried more then he laughed.
    It’s so unfortunate that the writing sucks. Every character has their own personality but it seems that in the live action these personality traits are completely forgotten.
    Hopefully the second season will be better from the writing perspective.

    I hope you also watch the original after this and compare the two. I feel like the only reason this live action show gets so much hate is because of the unrealistic standards the animated show sets. Of course there are a lot of flaws in the netflix show, but this show is still better than most shows out there.

    They can still fix the issues of Season 1 of they truly love the original series and finish what they started.

  • @TheFireMonkey
    @TheFireMonkey Před 4 měsíci

    Yes, start from the start - season 1 is a bit uneven - I think they were having a bit of trouble identifying their audience, while it is done in a way that a parent can watch with their child and both can enjoy the show for different reasons [which is not easy to do] I'd say that episode 1 they thought the show was going to attract pre-teens but they discovered they were getting a lot of older kids too so they shifted the writing to target mid-teens and by the end of season 1 they were targeting more late teens and maybe young adults. I don't see this as a problem, but I thought I'd mention it in case you watch the 1st episode and get the idea this might be too young for you [most people don't seem to, but enough do on episode 1 that it is worth saying so you know that it changes quickly] By the start of season two I think they were writing so the younger end of the audience would still enjoy the show, the main bulk was assumed to be in the 18 to 22 range and there was lots for the older audience. My wife and I started watching it when it came out - we were both fans of anime and I think we were looking to see if there was any good anime on TV and found Avatar and so we gave it a chance [I'm not getting into the debate of, is it anime or cartoon - it's animated and it's good - that's enough for me] At that time, my youngest child was married, so I guess you could say I fell in the older audience category. I still love the show, and I'm a senior citizen now - and over all, it is on both my level and I believe it still is on a level an 8 year old can enjoy.

  • @lforlight
    @lforlight Před 4 měsíci +2

    The original had an actual sense of growth and progress. In the LA, Katara just masters her bending on her own. Aang tells her some spiritual thing and this novice waterbender can suddenly lift a column of water tens of meters high? And the one scroll is enough to self teach her everything? And Aang isn't even trying to learn it himself. In the animated show, Katara sucks, and both Aang and Katara know she's not going to be his teacher, but they try to learn what they can on their own on their way to the northern tribe to find a proper teacher for both of them. But modern writers fear women depending on men like vampires fear garlic. Women must be perfect and independent and strong and courageous. The only thing they showed in the LA that made some sense was Katara adapting an earthbending technique, but everything up to that seemed to come out of nowhere.
    On matters of production, I'm not a fan of the waterbending. Visually it looks good, sure, but it has no impact. It just looks like people are splashed slightly and they fall down. It feels so weak. The animated show made it feel like people get hit by a high pressure fire hydrant. Water tendrils feel like whips or ropes. They packed a punch. Not just water balloon splashes.
    You should watch the original fully. The LA mashed stories together to include as much as possible, but it didn't leave room for any. The animated show gives each one its platform to breathe.

Aang's past lives are apart of him, as stated in the show, so they already know the grief he is going through having lost his people. Yet Kyoshi treats him like he's worthless. Bumi is bitter that he left, not run away as everyone in this show keeps pointing out and yelling in his face that he did and should grow up.
    Hmmm... yeah ok how about you first. Because these adults keep acting like children.

    Please watch the animated show from the beginning! One of the biggest strengths of the original show is its writing and pacing, and I knew the live action would never live up to that aspect. The only thing I expected to enjoy in the live action was the new cast, the element bending effects, and the easter eggs for the fans, which the live show did deliver.

    This is coming from the animated fans. I do feel Netflix can improve the pacing and script writing better for season 2 and 3. Cause there is so so much filler arc that develop the characters development and very important to the story too. If they wanna improve or add can but just don’t rush it.

    I appreciate the opinion but I definitely don't see this as something to recommend to a new Avatar watcher. Recommending it someone who doesn't respect animation and wasn't going to watch the original in the first place, sure why not.
    But, definitely not someone who is at least open to the idea of watching animation.
    Though honestly with how much CGI is necessary because of the bending, I'm always curious where the line is for those who don't respect/like/think they're too old for animation.
    Though it would certainly be interesting to see you re-review the Netflix Avatar after watching the Original and actually seeing every change and misstep that you didn't even know about.
