Dissing people is really takeru's way of showing mercy. He doesn't want anyone taking on the samurai life because he knows what it costs on such a level that he was trained to be perfect but yet destined to fail. Discouraging people from becoming samurai is just a way for him to set them free without seeming like he's favoring others. Which is why his reveal at the end was such a big deal imo. It reframes his actions from a jerk perfectionist to someone who knows he's supposed to fail and knowing those that follow him are destined for equal ruin. If anything he would gladly have fought on his own because he can't live with that guilt.
And what makes this even more sad, is that after he fulfilled his purpose, he was tossed aside and his only way of living was taken away from him. Knowing nothing other then fighting. Juuzo, the fighting maniac, was there to show what Takeru would’ve been.

Calling it better than Samurai is underselling it. Shinkenger is right at the top among the best of the best sentai seasons. While Samurai is at the bottom of the bottom barrel.

Haha, I do think Samurai is a worse Shinkenger, but I wanted to keep the question an open one so that nobody rushes to the conclusions they already had without thinking through the how's and the why's :)
Shinkenger works better because Samurai feels like a bunch of weebs trying to be Japanese. I mean they didn't even get the Kanji strokes right when they morph. Nitpicking aside, they screwed up the kagemusha aspect.

I feel like your review really misses a lot of the point of a good number of tropes and cultural pieces of Japan. Genta being so silly and loud is meant to contrast the severity and rule bound status of a samurai. His status as a sushi seller is so much lower than a samurai, and his total lack of conformation to the culture matters a great deal more in Japan than it does in America. So him being thrown out has much more to do with classism and social status than in the case of Shinken Brown, who was a foreigner and therefore the edicts of hospitality apply where they don't to Genta, as someone who is natively Japanese. For a sushi maker to become a samurai is a much more impressive story arc than you give it credit for. (Edited as I mixed him up with Antonio for profession.)
Likewise, Ryuunosuke's goofy and loud obsession with being loyal reflects his kabuki background. He's an actor who has been forced to become a samurai, both very important and traditional roles, but one that is being an actor. So even if they're a bit grating to a western ear, it's important to remember that they're from a culture that has had, and still somewhat has, a very harsh view of social status, roles, and societal rules.
Also, adoption in Japan doesn't mean the same thing as it does in the West. Adoption into a family is more like making someone your heir than anything else. It's not saying she raised him, or anything like that. It's a legal way to make that person the family legacy. Oftentimes in Japan queer people will adopt their lovers into their family because marriage isn't an option. Legally being viewed as family, even if it's not the correct way, is seen as a practical option that should be open for a multitude of reasons. Primary among them though is allowing childless families who run companies or other businesses to be able to easily keep their business running after they're gone by handing it off to a trusted apprentice who they accept into their family. More or less anyway.
As for Mako, she's definitely amazing, but just wait till you get to Ahim.

Yeah, I definitely agree that he misses a lot of the cultural context that Shinkenger uses throughout the show. I thought that the emphasis on Japanese culture made the series and even the characters he's not to found of stand out to me. It's the superposition of antiquated samurai ideals and customs placed into the 21st century that makes the show so interesting to me

As for Mako or Ahim, I still like Mako more but I found Ahim very interesting in her season since she's the most unlikely to be a pirate...which made me excited about her backstory (which was frustratingly quite late in the season).
I honestly think the whole struggle to accept Genta had more to do with his actual situation rather than the legitimacy of his samurai status. With Mr. Brown, he was never considered a real Shinkenger, rather just a fan and samurai enthusiast. Ryunosuke originally didn't want anything to do with Brown and tried to drive him away with overly intense training, but over time realized that Mr. Brown actually had the right attitude and respect for samurai and decided to train him seriously. With Genta, the presence of a ShinkenGold who uses electronic Mojikara and can create his own origami was probably a shock to Ryunosuke's traditionalist system, but more importantly, Genta's overly bombastic disposition and constantly proclaiming himself a samurai likely gave Ryunosuke the impression that he simply didn't respect samurai enough to actually be one. ShinkenBrown was never taken seriously and no one (other than Mr. Brown I suppose) ever even considered him to be a real Shinkenger. But ShinkenGold was as real as it got. Combine that with the respect factor, and you get Ryunosuke struggling to accept Genta until the latter actually proves that he is serious and does in fact have what it takes to be a real samurai despite his personality.
MAN, Shinkenger is amazing; I still to this day consider it the best Sentai Series to date. I still get goosebumps seeing the scene where Takeru is kicked out of the Shiba House because of Kaoru's return, and he runs into Juzo; Juzo simply says (paraphrasing), "We both belong nowhere. Wanna fight?" And Takeru simply has a somber smile & faces him. This scene had SOOOOOOO MANY LAYERS TO IT that I absolutely loved....Takeru Shiba is HANDS DOWN, the BEST developed Red Ranger in all Sentai.
To be honest, I think Dekaranger is the best Super Sentai in MY opinion. Shinkenger is close though..

Yeah, Dekaranger plot is odd but it still fun and enjoyable. The reason that I like Dekaranger is the characters, the music and the bias I have for Dekaranger. It was my childhood after.

Dekaranger is really, REALLY good. It's simply a different kind of show from Shinkenger, and in fact from most Sentai in general. An entirely direct comparison would be unfair, it ultimately comes down to taste in my opinion.
Shinkenger is by far my favorite Super Sentai series. The show's main writer, Yasuko Kobayashi, is over criticized for her use of cliche character tropes and stereotypes, but Shinkeger shows why those tropes are so popular since it presents us with some of the best use of them while at the same time subverting some of the stereotypes in the latter half, specifically when it came to Takeru's and Juuzo's characters.
To be honest, Samurai left me with such a bad taste in my mouth, I had to watch Shinkenger, which then got me into Super Sentai.
Unlike Samurai, which didn't focus a lot on characters other than Jayden of Nazareth, Shinkenger had a depth to their characters, and it's amazing how all four of the retainers developed throughout the season. The focus episodes would really hook you up to a character, forming a bond between the character and the audience. And, apart from fighting monsters, which was basically Samurai overall, Shinkenger was really inspiring.
The prime reason why Shinkenger, and also Gokaiger, was much better than their counterparts, was because of the characters. The depth of the characters was what carried both the seasons, unlike Samurai and (Super) Megaforce, which was basically 90% acting and 10% cheesy dialogues with stony expressions. Miss those times when Power Rangers had depth to their characters.

Learning about Ryunosuke's obsessive devotion to Takeru puts the way they translated his character into Kevin in a more WTF light, as it basically becomes a black man who believes his life's duty is to serve a white guy without question.
I feel like Samurai would have been better if Kevin and Mike's characters were swapped because Mike very clearly needed a role model

Agreed. Using the Supernatural elements of the story to deny the excessive racism and bits of sexism that has always in part defined the Neo-Saban era (See Roboknight learning rap verses from a black kid.) is unwise. It exists despite that.

Genta is the comic relief, and the best friend of taker u. Yeah he needs more evolution of his character. But one factor why this sentai was so well loved was the cast as a whole. Everyone grew and the theme of this sentai which is trusting one another not because they have to but their own decision, matches the chemistry they have here. I just love them and I will not be tired of watching this sentai.
It's the only samurai in spandex that works. The other is just weebs play pretend. They took away the things important and makes Shinkenger works.

How to make a good show?
Japan : Have an original plot, comparable to that of a shounen anime with millions of viewers, essentially creating the best live action anime there is.
American (Saban): jUsT aDd BlAcK gUy.....
I feel like Shinkenger works so much better than Samurai because of the context that Shinkenger is japanese. The story and central themes are japanese history and culture, so that works on a fundamental with the japanese kids inheriting their samurai birthright, even if they didn’t initially want that lifestyle. Ryuunosuke’s campy personality comes from his Kabuki background, Genta is seen as “lower” by the rest of the team because he’s a lowly sushi chef and not a noble warrior class. It simply doesn’t translate well to an american context. PR Samurai is a bunch of american kids who are just samurai for no reason. Kevin is just a dedicated swimmer and is milquetoast compared to the giant-personality Ryuunosuke. Antonio seems no more qualified to be a samurai than the rest of the samurai rangers. It just doesn’t work the same way that Shinkenger works

It might just be among my favorite Sentai themes. I didn't skip it once during my watch through!
I appreciate how Ryunosuke and Chiaki are complete opposites in the team. Ryunosuke was raised to serve his lord without question, while Chiaki was given much more freedom during his training. They really show you the two sides of the spectrum in a system of retainers and lords, at least in their team. It’s interesting how their character arcs are completely opposites of each other. Ryunosuke starts off loyal and has to loosen up, while Chiaki is too free and has to become more serious. I feel as if they are quite essential characters in a show that includes this lord system. Plus, they help make the show fun! (Of course, they’re not the only ones who make it fun.)

I think the point is, you were ruined by Samurai to not be able to dismiss Ryunosuke and Genta's antics, because they tried and failed to emulate that in PR. Mainly because no on in the west acts like that, at all. Even when they're being overly dramatic.
Looking foward to hearing about Kaoru, the thing with Lauren seemed interesting but It sounded like it didn't work well so I wonder how the original compares
The "true hidden lord" plot definitely worked better in Shinkenger, as it's a classic "kagemusha" plot common in feudal era Japanese fiction. The eventual reveal showed Takeru to be a big fat liar, pumping up the tension and conflict that much better (aside from putting into context his aloof and 'dickish' personality early on).

I definitely had fun watching it, even during the more dour moments with things felt maybe a hair too serious, tonally.

I'd like to second the Liveman recommendation. As a much older Sentai, it feels a bit overlooked, but it was a fun ride.
Jetman was awesome. Memorable characters, and one of the most unique story and unique sentai ever. I miss watching it

The Disney Brain I recommend kiva too it has some issues but it is enjoyable and has a cool way of telling it’s story

And you highlight what is the largest problem in the Neo Saban era: the Rangers are far too often just manikins filling out the suits, not real people. Even back to MMPR where there was no plotted character arcs, they still wrote the rangers as people first, even if their growth was more spotty due to not having an end point for the characters.

Wild Force is more of a Better Not For Note Adaptation. They have two team ups unlike Gaoranger. And they have MAIN VILLAIN, which Gaoranger lacked.

Man, am I the only one who really enjoy watching Zi-O and think is a good Kamen Rider (and anniversary) show?
Despite of its glaring flaws, Zi-O had something that Decade lacked: a STORY to follow.
Hard to comment on it's status as a celebratory season without watching more of what it's celebrating, but yeah, I'm enjoying the ride so far!
I just wish it was more story focused and not episodic, and one of the reasons for why people don’t like it is the same writers from Ninninger are working on that show
I'd say I enjoyed, but only for the cameos and the funny scenes with Woz and such. Otherwise, I don't have any strong feelings for it. Fights were actually ass. They were so boring to watch, and this is right after I watched Geats as well.

I think your closing statements really hammer in what Shinkenger & Samurai are: character-driven stories, not plot-driven stories. Shinkenger excelled at hiding it's lack of plot by having strong characters people could feel for while Samurai couldn't mask the subpar plot cause so many of its characters weren't allowed depth.
Shinkenger is my second favorite Sentai.

Since Beast Morphers is gone for AWHILE, will you do like a "reaction/thought" video of the first chunk of the season? Apparently, they have wrapped up filming. I'm wondering if this means there won't be a "Super Season" and Beast Morphers is the only one. Hopefully, that is the case because the "Super Seasons" really don't do it for me...

This was the First Sentai I watched when I thought they cancelled Power Rangers for good after RPM and I was so surprised how good it was so to say how disappointed I was in Samurai is a understatement

I prefer Time Force did a little better job adapting Timeranger and I like both Time Force and Timeranger for Different reasons. But the Samurai storyline just doesnt fit Power Rangers. I would watch Shrinkenger instead!

3:34 i watched about half of the sentai series and that was my favorite episode and i couldn't believe they didn't adapt it using bulk.
First ever sentai I watched and i watched it while it was happening i think around 2009 to 2010 when i wasn't able to watch power rangers. I had a pretty timely introduction to sentai i guess as i was only 10 but after all these years, it has still stuck.

about 5 years ago now i was on a major power rangers binge and looked up timeranger (like DB, my fav PR is time force). i quickly absorbed timeranger, jetman, gobusters, toqger and then started watching kyuuranger while it aired. i was jonsing for more when i had caught up with kyuuranger and decided to see what the sister show was all about. KAMEN RIDER is now my total obsession. gaim, W, ex-aid, build, kiva, ryuga and amazons all make sentai and power rangers look like cheesey costumed kids shows. it's great to see a personal power rangers celebrity go though this.
While I love Kamen Rider, I've come to prefer Sentai to Kamen Rider when it comes to certain aspects. Whether old or new, Sentai always feels much more earnest in presentation, story, and characterization. That, and Sentai have better fight choreography 80% of the time.

You should take a look at Metal Heroes. Specifically things like Space Sheriff as an entry point since they’ve crossed over with Super Sentai recently. (Space Squad)
They’re a lot of fun.

I like how they try stay consitent to te more popular seasons for exemple SPD is uber broken when they got into action on sharted grid.

Anyone seen the episode from shinkenger involving the monster Kugutsukai? They never adapted him becauw he had what looked lik a foster human torso on his middle. Also, he had a rather disturbing design.
Gokaiger is better Super Megaforce. I grew up with Jungle Fury and Gekiranger and also Kamen Rider Kiva.
A lot of people around here didn't like Kiva, but I loved it and the chars made sense given their situations.
I haven't finished watching Shinkenger, but it shows that PR Samurai is almost a carbon-copy of it.
Plus a google translate version of it which makes it worse. Bringing and talking about Japanese culture to America, Saban fucked that up.
It's ironic the changed Sentai that could work just fine in western setting, like Megaranger or Go-Onger, but not the one that has its core relies heavily on Japanese culture and value, like Shinkenger

shinkenger is childhood. i remember watching it when i was 7-8 (22 now) for some reason i miss power rangers more then a decade later. Ive been watching with my fiancé. Now that i have bigboy money , im going to get the bandai morpher (collectors addition) to satisfy my younger self 😂

My biggest problem with Power Rangers Samurai besides flat characters, was the fact that the localization team didn't know how to adapt Shinkinger. I honestly don't mind if it was a one for one adaptation. The only problem with that is that is what made Samurai unbelievable. For example, let's look at a Power Rangers season that knew how to adapt Eastern Culture: Power Rangers Ninja Storm. I never once watched Ninja Storm and questioned how were they ninjas in a Western setting. Unlike Samurai, where I questioned it constantly. And that is because it was a literal one for one adaptation, which didn't attempt to make Eastern Culture digestible. At no point did they attempt to explain how did samurais show up in the West, well. It was the show just demanded that the audience believed in it. It felt like a mockery to Eastern Culture.
That's what happens when your script writers are translators. This issue actually came up in the writers room. Bhaumik, the writer of Forever Red, pitched a different version of Samurai and was shot down. James W. Bates, the writer behind Vrak, basically told Tzachor that the writers were just sick of translating stories. Bates even recalls how he had to fight for more settings other than the Shiba House since that's where Tzachor wanted all the scenes to be.

Gokaiger aka: what zi-o and megaforce tryed to be for their respectives frachises and fail, or wath the wirter of kairi tryed to copy and fail because the new badly desined toy are more impotant than a consise caracther.

Lol and yeah, I'm also so deep into Tokusatsu at this point that I keep unintentionally referencing specific memes and lines in conversations with my friends, especially "damn you Decade" when we talk about something bad thats happened. Also I'm a Christian so I don't like to swear in public, but now when I do swear in public I do it in Japanese 80% of the time so no one knows exactly what I said 😂. Tokusatsu is a strange world but it's a fun adventure nonetheless.

Kotoha is best girl. I started watching Shinkenger because of Kotoha and I thought to myself, "That is the cutest Super Sentai ever!"
Since you have break it the power rangers toku barrier, i suggest i few series to watch next,Kamen Rider W, Kamen Rider Blade, Kamen Rider Gaim, Engine Sentai Go-Onger, Doubutso Sentai Zyuohger, Lupinranger Vs. Patranger, Legend Hero, Ultraman Geed, Ultraman Nexus, Ultraman Mebius, Madan Senki Ryukendo, Bima Satria Garuda X, Akibaranger, GARO, a little bit too much right, just take your time, there is plenty of toku, and even more coming up like Ultraman Taiga and Kamen Rider Zero-1.
