    I let my crab pots sit in the warm Chesapeake Bay water for too long and now they are extremely dirty. My crab pot cleaner keeps breaking and that means I have to pull my pots and power wash them back at the marina. I hope I can get my pots cleaned and back in the water quickly. Dirty crab pots don't catch crabs and thats a huge porblem.

    When you run out of deck space but still have another 50 or 75 pots to collect, you can pull a platform on pontoons (a water trailer) behind your boat. You need an operator on the platform to run a small outboard to keep it under control and to receive the handoff of pots from the Southern girl. It can get kind of complicated, but it saves a ton of diesel and time. we used a similar setup in the Gulf

    Ok bud, big idea here. That whole clean down setup is a nightmare, batteries, residential electrical, no GFIs, no water resistance. Eliminate it all. Get a small generator or gas powered pressure washer and wash them down on the boat. You can pull water with a hose and a filter straight from the side of the boat. That whole corner has a bunch of space without the heater and everything to do plenty. Go self enclosed system and eliminate the electrical/leaky disaster waiting to burn up your boat. Greetings from Indian River Bay DE crab team

    • @Infernomm
      @Infernomm Před 23 dny +40

      A pressure washer will work, but I think the problem is he needs HOT water in order to kill bacteria and algae.

      There is also the issue with dumping water into a boat, a lot of pressure on the boats bilge to keep up.

    • @OttoTheWeim
      @OttoTheWeim Před 23 dny +9

      My guess is the pump motor is burning out by overheating. Running continuous duty in the enclosed bilge with the water temp being mid 80s is causing an issue with overheating.

    • @ryanm4319
      @ryanm4319 Před 23 dny +5

      I think the whole heater/sump/overflow system is just way too complicated with too many fail spots, and sumps in general pull a ton of amperage usually for those golf cart batteries. It’s probably either pressure wash, or dunk hot to remove the grime..one or the other. My vote’s for a quick spray and reload..I don’t think it’ll create any more water than he already has running over everywhere haha. We don’t drop for 4+ days and turn ours every 24 hrs so we rarely get build up like that but less complications on board is always better mechanically and electrically for everyone imo. Make a knee wall maybe in that corner with FRP and have a dedicated spray spot with a backsplash, heated pressure washer would be 10/10!

    What temperature does your engine run vs. what temp is needed to clean the pots? If your engine temp is sufficient, try re-routing the cooling water discharge from the engine to the wash tank and eliminate the burner and pump situation all together. Keep up the good work man. The only issue is that the wash tank is super hot and has to maintain that temp while the engine water would have to be cycled through the tank and out to the bay so it would only retain the heat from the engine which is likely just a bit too low for this job. If the tank water could be cycled through an independent radiator and back into the tank, then it could work to reduce the load on the heater at least but that's some extra equipment on a purpose made boat with little extra room so the tradeoff has to be valuable.

    Summer of '01 to summer '03 I worked on the Miss Linda out of chesapeake beach md. We got paid 1 dollar a pot to pressure wash them every day after we were done hauling. BUT even your dirtiest pot isn't even close to the ones we were washing. Back then the only way to clean them was to pressure wash so the crabbers waited until there were barnacles and stuff growing on them before they'd haul them in and have them cleaned. They were so bad you could barely see through them. Which makes them even heavier and messier when you have to move and stack them when you're cleaning them. Me and my buddy would clean about 300 a day for 2 or 3 of the days of fishing over the week and split the money. Unfortunately fall of '03 hurricane isabel sank the Miss Linda in the marina and the captain never got her back on the water.

    The burner issue was most likely a safety shutoff, carbon buildup, or fuel regulator issue. What might be a lot more simplistic and reliable is a propane instant water heater used for RVs. They get hot as heck, work very well, and come with the properly sized pump that is easily replaceable. Once more it will take up less space.

Occasionally pump impellers stop working and the following links I provided are used for hot water use. The pumps run on 120 volts so you would need something which provides this power for the pumps to operate. One of them has a stainless-steel housing. Offhand I am not sure which is more compatible with salt water. The others are cast iron. This just may get your hot water cleaning system operational.

I’ll try to wander over there this week when you’re at your stand to give you a hand maybe or work out some of your problems. There is an acronym/abbreviation to life and a lot of things.,…. K.I.S.S. /Keep it simple stupid. And I’ve seen you kind of done your best to keep it that way. But you have a huge heating machine on your boat already. But that might be something for a later date to come up with but for now I can give you help with your fuel oil burners/diesel. Show you how to repair those pumps or service them pretty much anything to do with pressure washing equipment, fuel oil, burners and mechanical engines.

    In my boat the water heater has to heat scource options - cooling water and electric heating. When running the engine, the hot cooling water runs through a coil in the water heater like a heat exchanger to warm up the standing water in the water heater. The water in the water heater gets really hot from this system. I would for shure tap into the cooling water circuit and use the hot water from that. But the Diesel engine, exhaust elbow still needs a flow of water to cool down the exhaust. You figure this out...

    I’m no fisherman, so I don’t know much, but I do know a square knot can be used to tie two ropes together but usually is a fairly weak knot. A sheet bent or carrick bend may be a better more permanent knot to tie two ropes ends together without having them work itself apart.

    It might be a big cost, but I think you should maybe paint your pots with anti-foulent paint. It would last probably 4 or more before the pots start getting dirty. We used it when we were crabbing in the Delaware Bay. I didn't like dipping pots in it, but dirty pots don't catch crabs.

    Get your water supply from the discharge side of the engine. The water will already be warm so the burner should have no issue getting it hot. As long as you can tee in and get enough pressure, you will have water anytime the engine is running. If not, you may have to tee in somewhere else on the engine where the pressure is higher. The small amount of water you would be drawing out of the system shouldn’t affect the cooling of the engine

    In regards to your water pump issue we do in Alaska. We have a secondary water pump that has a diaphragm in it pulls the seater and pushes it to our system. You could put a secondary water pump that’s belt. Just gotta make some brackets and it will push anywhere to 110 towards 120 psi to your little system

    I use bigger version of the same Beckett oil burner on my 8gpm commercial pressure washing rig, the igniter can be the problem, but 90% of my issues with that burner were lack of battery power or charge. If battery is weak or too small, the igniter wont fire and the pump will keep dumping diesel into the coil and if the igniter decides to fire again, it can burn down your boat. Neard many stories of pressure washing rigs and trucks burning down from that. They make small 4gpm hot water pressure washers. Maybe thats the route u should take

    Consider getting one of the Milwaukee tool m18 pumps- even if just to have on boat as a backup that can swap in with a couple hose fittings.. might not be a long term solution but could possibly get you thru if there is a breakdown- those little m18 pumps are workhorses-. Also consider getting one of those ecoflo or jackets battery backup generators so you can run a 120v pump instead of those 12v. If you got a big enough battery generator- maybe even a small solar panel I bet you could go all day long pumping

    Luke, for now couldn’t you use a small like inverter generator like a honda 2200 to run a 120v pump? Let it run the burner too. Thats how bigger comercial boats run continuous duty pumps is with a generator. But I think you can mount a belt driven on the motor somewhere and just let it be separate from the cooling system. Third option would be to add another big alternator and keep the pump battery and alternator as a separate system. Low voltage will make a 12v pump heat up from the inside. The more flow on pumps is more load so it causes more heat to pump water overboard. Keep up the good work.

    Not sure if it’s been said or not, but you need a continuous duty relay to correctly run that pump to keep it from over heating. Great vid, keep it up!

    To make it easier for the water pump, I would lower the hose outlet down to sea level. Then you get a suctioning/siphon effect to help it out
