    Both are great back-country planes. For me though, I would go with the 170. I have a soft spot for both the 170 and the 140. Great choice of plane, Steph! Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.

    I'm pleasantly surprised with the Bearhawks' performance. Granted, I never knew about that plane until a few weeks ago but I assumed it was just like a Super Cub by looking at it.

    If you test again, after doing all test, need to swap pilots and redo the same test.. remove pilots as a variable. Enjoyed the video....Steph seems to be getting more comfortable in front of the camera.

    50 year gap and almost no difference when you weigh it all out. Great video thanks. Ill stick with the maule. I think the maule (with the exact same motor) would win in all categories, and certified.

  • @franck_mee
    @franck_mee Před 4 lety +1

    Well, the 170 has another advantage: it's certified.
    Here in France, with a few exceptions, experimental-like aircraft are restricted from professional activites, discovery flights, instruction, etc. I guess it's different in the US, but here it means if you want to make a living (or just do a few jobs so you don't loose to much money) from flying, having a certified aircraft is mandatory.

    • @watashiandroid8314
      @watashiandroid8314 Před 4 lety +1

      It's the same in the US; experimental aircraft cannot be used for compensation or hire. You can get an exception from the FAA, but I have heard it is difficult.

    For me to carry 4 people with some luggage it would be the 170 and more comfortable on long flights.Don't forget the 170 is a 1956 air plane older than you two.It wasn't designed for bush flying cross country.

  • @willnelson5692
    @willnelson5692 Před 2 lety

    My first thought on the glide test is the windmilling prop creates a similar drag force on both planes but the proportional effect for the higher mass 170 less.

    I’m actually surprised at the small differences, with a triple blade prop on the 170, could pick that climb rate up a fair bit, landing distance will be improved with practice. The 170 has just jumped on my radar

    • @z987k
      @z987k Před 4 lety +2

      I bet you can't find a 170 that tricked out for sale. That's probably one of the best set up 170s in the world. The only thing 170 about it is the fuselage.
      175 wings with extensions and leading edge cuff, 180 gear legs, 180hp o-360(stock is a 145hp o-300), constant speed carbon fiber prop(stock is a fixed pitch aluminum. 29in bushwheels. There's in excess of 100k worth of work done.

    • @4rebeln8
      @4rebeln8 Před 4 lety

      z987k I would just buy a normal 170. Couldn’t afford to do all that.

    • @z987k
      @z987k Před 4 lety +1

      @@4rebeln8 Well a normal 170 can't do half what this one can, it's more or less not even the same airplane. A stock 170 is a dog. Fully loaded you're talking 2000ft strips at low density altitude not 5-700.

    Hi Steph / Jon, Another great video guys, thanks. How does the performance (and weight) of N2962D with all the mods (0-360, Horten kit, landing gear etc) compare to a stock 170B and a 180 ? Also, as someone else mentioned, would be good to do a similar comparison between the Bearhawk Patrol and a PA-18.

    you must be think how much bear and cessna invest money, bear build kit cost 72000 plus engine maybe about 100 000 all and lot hours build it, and old used cessna 30 000-40 000 and ready to fly. if want cheap only fly cessna have lot lot better, if want build and stay in garage longtime buy bearhavk. my option have cessna i like fly not stay garage build owerprice plane. important have cessna used but good condition ready to fly cost lot lot cheapen half cheapen than bear.
