  • This is a review of the Stihl MS 500 i , after six months of commercial use. The saw was used with a Stihl 36 inch, light weight bar primarily, as well as a 32 inch Stihl light weight bar for some of the time. It pulled the 36 inch bar with no problem and it cut like crazy with a 32. There is more to say....but I suppose you will have to watch the video if you want the full scoop.

I was doubtfull these were any good but once i got one of my own I want a couple more. Far easier to run all day ,I was hurt on the job and heavy saws suck to run all day. Great review.

After buying and running max flow’s on my 661c/ 500i and red beards 261 foam filter, I will never use stock stihl filters again. The fine material that all of their stock/hd filters let bypass under them showed me all I needed to see.

Nice chips. Sharp cutters with what looks like very good raker depth.

Yeah I love mine too. Great saw. The only minor negative I've noticed is that the thing seems to drink more gas than the other saws -- maybe that's where the power comes from :) Great video buddy

Their very nice saws, love the power to weight ratio on them

Power to weight ratio as well as the ability to hit the top end instantly with the electronic ignition. The mounts can be stiffened with a kit and the max flo and larger dogs made it better.

They are POS. The fact you have to buy extra shit to make a 1600 dollar saw work right tells the whole story.

What bothers me about the fuel injection and the electronically controlled carbs is the repair costs.
    What's your thoughts on that?

You didnt even open up the muffler?
I got a 400 and hated it. I opened the muffler ahout 3 times the factory amount. Now its acceptable w a 24"

Dan, Thanks for sharing. I looked hard at the 500i a few years ago, but they weren't quite out yet at the local dealer, so I ended up with the 462. I'm really pleased with the 462, but I wonder if you ever ran that and what do you think regarding the 462 or 500i? We don't have old growth in this part of Maryland... so people think I have a monster saw running a 28" bar!! Realistically though, the 261 with a 20" bar does 90% of what I need done and it's a lot less wear on Wayno. Stay safe.

Thanks for the comment Wayne. No, I have not run the 462's . I run husqvarnas a lot, and the only Sthil I run is the 500i ( Great saw!) Because the 500i is fuel injected, there is just not any other saw that competes with it for the power to weight ratio. That being said....it is more expensive and probably not necessary for part time use. It is worth testing however, and it is an enjoyable saw to operate.

Pretty sweet looking saw, would love to have one but honestly can’t justify the price for just doing firewood. My 562 is still my go to but if needed pull out the 7900 in a pinch!

No, The 500i feels really good. Well balanced, user friendly, easy on the operator.

My echo 7310 has cut circles around every saw put up against it, including this overpriced pos and the 881.

That Echo is a very VERY nice saw, but trying to compare it to the 881 on pretty much any operational or technical level is a bit weird my brother.
